A special announcement from the Special 1

Post categories:

The Special 1 | 12:41 UK time, Friday, 12 November 2010

This week on my show. . .

It's very quiet in the studio as Wayne remains in the US for some 'radical treatment' on his ankle. Though his ramblings about 'Old Mother Hubbard' make me suspect all is not right with the boy. Could he be thinking of signing up to a new club managed by someone called Tom from LA?

Also, following a series of long negotiations with BBC Big Boss, I make a very special announcement about the future of my show. And while a media blackout surrounds the topic of my sending off against Murcia; Mr Alex, Voyeur, Roy openly discuss Ian's tactics to become part of the inner sanctum of Premier League managers.

Also keep doing it to me on the Twitter @special1tv and don't forget to check out fantastic episodes of my show right here

Do it!

To all the people saying "if you don't like it then don't watch it" are you actually suggesting that no negative comment should ever be spoken anywhere, ever? Because that response works for anything.

I can just see it now: an English Literature seminar at a prestigious university, the professor outlining his critique of the way the author portrays the working classes, referencing other scholars and demonstrating his case with aplomb. Gentle applause. What a clever guy.

But then! A student puts his hand up and responds:

"If you don't like it then don't read it! Simple!"

Gasps. Then applause! The brilliant student has thoroughly demolished the professor's criticism. How can this eminent scholar respond? The student was right: if he didn't like it, he shouldn't have read it!

Two days later the student is declared Arch-Professor of Oxbridge University for Life.

    FIN

The moral of the story is, that's a really vapid way to respond to criticism. If you like the show, make a good case for why it's funny. Telling people they don't get it, or that they shouldn't watch it, just suggests there isn't really a case in its defence at all. Given the number of people who've had to resort to that gambit, and given how utterly dire and empty of any creative spark the above video was, I'm with the people saying can I have my bleeding license fee back. Pretty please.

    Oh, and

Furthermore, people watching any television show are assumed to be contributing to the profits of the makers of that show and the channel it's on. For the beeb, this is via license fee. For other channels, via ad revenue. Therefore, if you don't like a show, you have every right to complain. The television producers then have every right to listen to or ignore your criticism as they wish. It's sort of how free speech works, guys.

Anyway, using your critique analogy, try and defend slapstick - tell us why it's funny, even if you don't think it is. Defining humour is like defining beauty, and luckily, it's different for everyone.

So - , utterly predictable jokes, not a single laugh in sight and the 'humour' coming from atrocious impressions and borderline offensive comedy foreign and regional accents. Am I watching some really bad forgotten 1970s sitcom here?

This is truly, truly, truly awful stuff. Embarrassingly bad. I can only assume either everyone in the BBC sports department had their senses of humour surgically removed and are not fumbling in the dark, taking wild guesses at what might be funny or the majority of the staff are making snide remarks or feeling sheepish about the fact this contemptible excuse for entertainment is being shown. Surely there can't be a mass delusion that this is actually in any way funny?

Pretty much the first rule of doing impressions is that you have to be more extreme, funnier and more compelling than the people you impersonate. The real-life Keane, Mourinho and Holloway are all far more entertaining watchable in their natural element than these watered-down versions of them.

I hate publicly criticising things as it's cynical, non-productive and lazy but this is awful, awful stuff and I wish the BBC was putting something more interesting up. I'm not going to put Robbo on a pedestal as some comedy genius - he was a likable occasionally amusing football fan whose jokes sometimes worked and sometimes didn't but at least he had more ideas and insight than this nonsense. Personally I'd rather see a weekly blog from a professional footballer (the Gavin Strachan thing still sits with me as one of the best things on the BBC) but really anything is better than this. It's the least funny thing I've ever seen on the BBC. And I say that as a man who's watched All About Me, the Mighty Boosh AND Two Pints Of Lager & a Packet of Crisps.

    a) how bad the impersonations are. The Holloway and Ferguson ones especially. It's not that they necessarily need to sound like those people but they just seem to have no bearing whatsoever on the people involved.

    b) it all seems to be based around jokes that got old years ago - Jose Mourinho's arrogant, Sven Goran Eriksson's incompetent and desperate etc. Wayne Rooney may not be the brightest person on Earth. Hasn't all that been done to death already?

A quick bit of research shows that the BBC spent around 3.5% of the licence fee revenue on BBC Online (in 2005-2006). Assuming that this vlog is paid from that budget (rather than others that are easy to find the financing information on) and extrapolating that to the current financial year, then quit being exaggerating hyperbolists. So you didn't like it? Sure then, damn it all to hell and complain to your heart's content. But 'demanding' your licence fee be returned is just nonsense. Watch every single product put out by the corporation, post a worthy review of all the content, and then tell me what bits of your funding you would like returned. If not, quick complaining, and get some balance back in your life. Saving that, I'm sure there are some books that need burning somewhere.

Oh, and those who though that "rubber puppets with funny voices and juvenile humour" belonged on CBBC, "I've Never Met a Nice South African" by Spitting Image could be considered juvenile humour. If you don't get the satire.

This sketch (to me) was humourous, prompting a few sniggers. I'd watch the seriesagain, or I may not. I will not waste precious time arguing for a few fractions of a penny to be returned to my account. Nor shall I wonder how much Brucie gets paid for his few hours work on the Beeb, how much is spent on Miss Daly's frocks, nor how much longer Widdi will remain on the show. If I don't like it, I find something else... like wrestling with pigs on the Internet.

The BBC cannot claim that there is a large demand for this, indeed there is a larger demand for Quotes of the Week or for Robbo. Forums and blogs allow the BBC to be interactive with a much larger communication between the fee paying public and the journalists that run the website, perhaps they should explain there decision to cut two very popular segments for The Special 1? or why they are unable to run all of them? Though I imagine the answer to that, is costs.

its not as if theres ever going to be any genuine debate on here is it?

There are a lot people who don't have the intelligence to passively join in with these programmes and nobody would think of suspending these programmes from tv just because there are a lot of people who aren't intelligent enough to enjoy them! Same goes for this vid, there are a lot of people who don't have the same sense of humour... still no reason to ask for your bleeding license back is there! So just watch this vid, determine that you don't like it and get back to your own favoured programme!

How can that have anything to do with a short show which would make up less than 5% of the total output of the station. Can any of the great business minds tell me how this show was to blame? No, thought not.

Secondly I've said before you lot are worse than the Christian Alliance people who picketed the BBC for misspending money on Jerry Springer The Opera. At least they thought they had a real reason to be angry. You can easily read the (unfunny) Robbo blog elsewhere as has been pointed out many times so stop whining, like Jacko he ain't coming back (and as with Jacko too it's a good thing he's not).

Thirdly the BBC has to provide programming for all and cater to a wide range of tastes thusly we get Special 1 TV which was successful during the WC. You can go and watch Songs Of Praise on iPlayer if you want whilst we enjoy S1TV

Fair enough about output being related to viewing figures but the show wasn't the centrepiece of the Setanta schedule. It was the sports that they massively overspended on, they miscalculated their incomings and thought they could spend more than they could. It still doesn't explain how this show was singularly to blame for the demise of Setanta (like some have said).

I personally liked Jerry Springer the Opera but if the Christians (there's so many Mary Whitehouse organisations) get their way there will be nothing for me to watch. Mock The Week would go as would most comedy. The people on here want it to go because they don't like it not because of any monetary reason or any justified editorial reason.

The programme started on Setanta Sports and was wether you like it or not, very popular. This is why the BBC brought it back.

It's the over the top characters that make it funny, especially their take on Jose. Jose is a manager who, although had a brief stint in this country, was taken to heart by the British people. We loved his over zealous confidence and arrogance and that made him a comedy character. This programme just shows this to the extreme. After all, isn't a lot of comedy about it's extreme characters?

But, I'm not going to say "if you don't like it, don't watch it." If you don't like it then you have more than a right to critise it. After all we all pay license fees and it is our money that the BBC are spending. However, before you do critise, understand that some people do like the programe and it makes people happy.
