We didn't see that coming

Post categories:

The Special 1 | 11:57 UK time, Friday, 29 October 2010

Due to the untimely passing of Paul the Octopus this week, the S1TV blog will be much shorter.

His last words are reported to have been: "I'm willing to bet my life that Liverpool won't win on Sunday".

RIP Paul. We'll miss you.

The Special 1.

I’m the guy at BBC Comedy who commissioned Special1 TV for this season and I thought I’d just give a bit of background.

We always really loved Special 1 TV, it made us laugh and we jumped at the opportunity to bring it to the BBC for the World Cup. It got a great response and we wanted to continue for the new season.

Having spoken to our colleagues at BBC Sport, who liked the show too, it seemed that it would make sense to make a home for it in their website, closer to football fans and we hoped new fans of Special1 TV.

We will be putting out a show every two weeks throughout the season with it being exclusively available online on the Friday and then showing it on the channel on the Saturday. So you see it here first.

As we are only doing it every two weeks we think that a blog post in the intervening weeks is a good idea and hope that we may get some exclusive audio from the Special 1 too. It is not a traditional blog, we are just trying something new.

The show has a really strong online following and the producers pour over the comments, tweets and messages and this helps make the show what it is so please keep them coming. However the show is never going to be something that it is not and there are after all some great blogs on the site for general football debate.

Comedy is a tricky business and you can never please all the people all the time nor should you try. All we hope is that you can take the show for what it is and that hopefully it will make you laugh.

    Thanks

    Martin

Well done Martin. if only some of the other bloggers on the BBC would answer criticisms in the same way (no name's mentioned of course but the Chief Sports Writer springs to mind).

It wasn't that bad to be honest and I'm sure it appeals to many. However, I don't think it needs a comments section as it's hardly a blog and doesn't encourage any sort of debate.

As for the cancelled blogs... I still read Robbo regularly as I always enjoy them, but I do understand why it was pulled. Simple reason is, a select few of his fans took it over to chat about 'whatever', and the topic of the blog was lost. It simply couldn't continue. They blame the BBC for taking him away but ultimately it was their own fault for ruining any/all discussion/debate for everyone else.

Chris Charles however is a different matter, it should never have been stopped and was a definate highlight of the BBC website every week.

Since a bunch of people now seem to be throwing mud in the direction of 'haters', which I guess includes myself, I'd just like to point out that, as previously stated by several others including myself, we like the videos, we just find the usage of a 'blog' post (when it clearly isn't one) to promote it to be a bit, well, stupid, irritating and just plain not funny.

Also, I echo the sentiments of post #47 which stated that the kind of moderation applied earlier to this 'blog' (my original intention on coming back to this discussion was to focus on pointing out how wrong that is after my first post here was initially deleted, though I see it has now been restored, along with many others) and last week's edition is just not appropiate for a publicly funded organisation like the BBC. To try and basically eliminate your negative feedback in such a way under the pretence of censorship is nothing short of pathetic, morally wrong and quite possibly illegal. For shame.

Firstly i have to say that i love the show and thought this weeks episode was great again. I think this type of blog needs to be given time and then the majority of people will start liking it. People need to give it a chance, if you definitely don't like it then don't comment on it. It's only once a fortnight anyway.

I was never a fan of the Robbo Robson blog, it was dull at best. This is far better than that. However, i think the majority of users on this website would love to see 'Quotes of the Week' back, it was always an amusing read, especially when Wenger or Rafa were in full flow. Although to be fair, it virtually would have been a blog about Ian Holloway had you done it this year!

For anyone that still doesnt understand, let me make the complaint quite clear. As a blog, this just doesnt work. The television sketch works perfectly well, and I personally find it funny. What I and I suspect most others object to is the attempt to turn it into a humorous blog, with no actual humour involved.

If you want to give us a link to the programme on the sports website, then fine, but don't pretend its some sort of blog that suggests either insight or entertainment. The fact that the blog has been reduced little more than a link after only a couple of entries tends to suggest that someone at the BBC is actually taking notice of the feedback, at any rate.

@geordie2004 I would just like to point out that liking the show & disliking the blog is fine - but the amount of folk whinging (not once but many times) re- the removal/replacement of previous blogs is plainly pointless & causing unnecessary conflict & that is not what the show or blog is about.& i will repeat for those who have not read the previous posts that the previous moderation was because the situation was plainly getting out of hand & as i have also said before THIS BLOG SUPPORTS THE SHOW & IS PRIMARILY AIMED AT FANS OLD & NEW. & IMHO @Geordie2004, i think it is pretty crass for anyone to state what a blog should or shouldn't be - blogs come in all forms shapes & sizes & there isn't a rule book (nor should there be).
I have no qualms with people not liking the blog or the show but PLEASE complain to the correct department & stop trying to continue to make this an issue in THIS comments section as it is spoiling & deflecting from what the true purpose is. & that is for fans to leave questions & even CONSTRUCTIVE criticism of Special1 TV - " This show sucks" & other such comments are definitely not in that category.
This blog has been running for a short few weeks & quite frankly folk have slated it due to the disappearance of what they are used to, also most of them have not even given it a fair chance to develop.
Last weeks phone messages skit was new & inspired.
So judge the blog on the show & content & try not to hate/complain here JUST BECAUSE "IM A LICENSE PAYER" (yawn) which is something that has been said ad nauseum since the blog began & got heavily moderated.
I am NOT glad that the previously deleted posts were re-instated as it shows indecision by the mods (who i previously praised for doing it).
As Martin (the big boss) has stated (comment 40) - it is not possible to keep every license payer happy (especially where comedy is concerned)

Fair enough, but when you're pleasing an absolutely minuscule amount of people all the time with this rubbish, sometimes you have to just decide that something isn't funny.

    ---

And yet the large number of posts in support of the show suggests otherwise.

If I (or many other people, I should imagine) wrote messages about every single tv show / film that I didn't find funny, I wouldn't get much else done in life. Just don't bother.

Either enjoy the show, or appreciate that many others do and move on..

As the guy said, you cant please everyone with comedy, senes of humour are so diverse, but I wouldnt make the mistake of thinking you are in the majority by saying you dont enjoy the show. Most people who enjoy it wont bother posting anything because they like it as it is, they dont want anything changed so why post? Negativity will always have the stronger voice on anything like this.

Quite simply, if this isnt your cup of tea, you dont have to watch it. There are plenty of other show/videos for your amusement. Let us enjoy it in peace!

I love this show having watched it from the start. I do sometimes think though that some of the jokes may be lost on some people who didn't see the old shows. They just won't appreciate how funny the statement 'Ameobi Like' is, because to them it has no context, or referring to Wenger as Voyeur. How can a joke be funny if you don't know what it is. I on the other hand think its - fantastic. Be Champions.

Comment 112 (rozsmith) Makes very valid points & I would like to suggest that those who wish to see the shows entire archive from it's beginnings as "I'm on setanta sports" up until it's name change to Special1 TV & then onto the promised land of mainstream TV with the BBC.

You can access this back catalogue of shows by visiting the website for the Special1 TV production company (Blue elf - caboom) at
    http://www.caboom.ie
where you can find a link to the archive on youtube.

If some of the naysayers take some time to watch the show from the 1at episode ever (& particularly the 1st season of "I'm on setanta sports" then i feel that many attitudes will be changed as many of the shows IN JOKES originated from those early days.
For example... Wenger is "voyeur" because of the controversy over his apparent spying on Chelsea training sessions when Jose was Chelsea manager. & Dave from Newcastle is one of the 1st(spoof) persons to phone in with his obsession about Shola Ameobi & he has been showing up from time to time ever since. Dave is the only non celeb or footy based personality to ever phone Jose on the show.
TAKE ALOOK & YOU MAY BE SURPRISED...
If however you still don't like it then please leave it to us fans & long term devotees.

FOOTNOTE: Many comments have mentioned the Quotes of the week & although i have never seen this section, I would ask that the BBC at least re- consider bringing it back as it seems from the many many comments here that it was extremely well thought of & supported. & the majority have made the point in a decent manner & not in the immature manner that most of the other complainers have tended to use.

Special 1 TV is good, there's not been much football comedy on TV since Fantasy Football. I am starting the campaign to get rid of Rooney and Eriksson, get in Holloway and someone else. There's so much scope with a Holloway more than with the job-whore Sven (Shut up Sven!).
