Going with the flow.

Simon Mayo | 08:38 UK time, Friday, 24 August 2012

Here we go with another,in some parts, bank holiday weekend. But in others, just another ordinary one. We carry on and gloss over the differences (though taking Monday off is hardly helpful you may think). The weather forecast suggests that those with nothing planned might be getting it right; rain and rain and then rain doesn't bode well for anyone trying anything more adventurous than a spot of gardening. However the sun always shines on the optimist and Chris and his happy Carfesters seem to be having a swell time. If your hall is full of camping stuff and waterproofs/wellies/sleeping bags ready to disappear for a few days, the best of British to you. Let us not be beaten down by small things like lack of comfort, rivers of rain and the absence of amenities! Their are joys to be had in a field on lumpy ground and we are determined to discover them. The osteopath has been booked for next week and the central heating can be turned on when you return; your imminent diet of pies, chips, baked potatoes, pizza and biscuits will be easily balanced by your return to proper dietary rules next week. Or something like that.
But first a film show and an ARF to perform. Noisily boisterous head and toe-tapper required-apply below.
Have a prosperous and sound Friday, see you after 2&5. And, if you have one, enjoy the extra day off.

Good Morning Simon, Team and Blogpoppets

I'm feeling exceptionally smug, as I have two extra days off... I work in the public sector and the Queen kindly gives us an extra holiday each year for her "official" birthday. Usually it's tagged onto the late May bank holiday but as we had the Jubilee day this year it's been put back to this weekend. I'm try not to rub it in though, for those who will be working...

#1 #4 and #6 There are various programmes dedicated to Sir Elton this weekend, so maybe that's where the confusion arose.

Jennie, it was me who was asking about your op and I have seen your reply. Hope it all goes well, and they find what they're looking for - or not, if that is the hoped for result.

Happy Fridays all round - Hi-De-Hi Simon - and Bank Holiday greetings to the stand-in Driveteam. You did good.

No tenting for me this particular weekend but keeping a close eye on't weather for a local wedding tomorrow - a massive party on a Farm that's been in the family for generations.

I do love a knees-up in a barn so let's hope it's more Jolly Ploughboy and Jollity Farm than the sombre air created by the #FarmingOldies earlier this week. Am still chuckling at that #youvejusttippedmeovertheedge tweet - with just a twinge of guilt as I helped choose three of those choons. Just didn't expect all of them to get a play.

Morning Yo's Ter Si Pal & ALL Blog Pals...

    Bingo Star 'ere...

Yes we are 'eading at 'igh velocity (around 1,000mph... That's 'ow fast the earth turns) to a British Bank 'olidee weekend!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Being a man through experience and the advice that me father always told me this earth/ life is a place for the wise.... Aka we 'ave all that we need it's just using it correctly.... Ave learned it's best as much a spossible ter avoid following the crowd!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
'ence am working all over the Bank 'olidee.... Bag me double time... And getta day in lieu ter use when everyone else is back at work!!!!!!!!!!
But the one day am not working is terdee aka Friday... aka demolishion derby day as I call it on the roads added with a Bank 'olidee weekend.... So the last thing a wanter be doing is driving me truck terdee when everyone else... Is errrrr trying ter drive... aka stuck in a jam!!!!!!!!!!!!! (And a ain't talking the in a jar type).

Ken - Just wanted ter say thanks for the advice about the cycle trainer... Been noting it all down and yes they are a fanstic idea!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ave noticed all the pros use them ter warm up before an event at an event... like the Olympics!!!!!!!!
Googled them and a see Machine Mart ave some at only 60 quid area!!!!!!!!!!!
A agree yer would work up a 'ell of a sweat a there's no wind ter cool yer down too if yer using it indoors.... A could see mesen using it in the yard outside aslong a sit's not raining!!!!!!
Great idea as the time wasted travelling ter the gym... Could be used cycling at 'ome... and away from the nutters on the roads!!!!!!!!

Talking of which an update on me cycling progress so far:
Only been taking me cycling extra serious for just over a week and me times are coming down already!!!!!!!
Ave downloaded a brilliant app on me mobile called - my tracks -
It's free and can be used for anyone from walking, walking the dog, jogging, cycling or evne in the car!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Just turn on the recording mode... Off yer go and at the end turn off recording, save and yerv got yer top speed, average speed... a trace on a map of exactly where yerv been, yer distance and elevation over the whole journey!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
A recommend it ter everyone reading this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'll put a link on in a blog just after this one!!!!

Ave found me daily cycle ter work is 6.10 miles... bit less than a thought!!!!!!!

Anyway am ranging from 28minutes going into a strong 'eadwind... and although the whole route is up and down small inclines all the way... it's a 350' climb overall going to work!!!!!!!!
Me previous best was 22 minutes coming 'ome with a ferocious tail wind 'elping me go like a rocket!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The other day a equalled it.... Bit it was better as there was no wind 'elping.... Very still conditions!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yesterday a better it at 21mins 48 seconds with a slight swirly side wind!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

As a get stroonger and fitter the time should keep improving!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Me main area is me leg muscles need strengthening more ter power up the 'ills!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
A know am nowhere near fit enough as the pros or the complete all over leg strength!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Maybe a can get me time down ter 15minutes which is as fast as the pros!!!! But a would need a faster bike!!!!!!!!!!!!!
(mind you withn the road closed at an average spped of 50kmph similar ter the Tour de France pace... It would take 13miutes!!!!!!)

Over the week a achieve a top speed of 27mph which is pedalling like crazy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
But mostly it is the 25mph area!!!!!

Yesterday a went bazzzzzerk trying ter 'it 30mph... pedaling absolutely spinning me pedals as fast as possibly possible and a 'it 30.01mph!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Butta feel this is the top speed of me 20 year old Raleigh mountian bike!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A top pros bike can get over 40mph comfortably.... A need a new bike but for now me present bike is fine ter get started!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

'ope all 'ave a nice weekend working or not!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

    ENJOY ;-)))

    Morning all.

First of all, please may I add my good wishes to those with appointments pending, birthday wishes to Mrs Vildeen and anniversary wishes to Mr and Mrs Billie etc. Coincidentally I have just overtaken the length of time I was married to the ex-Mr from Eastleigh with how long I've been wed to the current Mr from Eastleigh.

No camping plans for me, but the Masters from Eastleigh are currently residing at the Reading Festival. Don't know why, but I've drawn the short straw for the third year, and am the one picking them up on Monday, when they will be muddy and zombie-like (oh, I do know, and that's why he's the ex-Mr from Eastleigh).

So ARFO suggestions from me today are:

A LITTLE LESS CONVERSATION by Elvis vs JXL

WALKING IN MEMPHIS by Mark Cohen

Don't know why I'm feeling Elvissy today, as one of my claims to fame as a young person was that I'd never seen an Elvis film (in the olden days they were regularly shown at weekends, along with Laurel and Hardy).

    Hi all!

I'm off today, but back at work for real on Monday. I've just spent two productive days getting my classroom (and my teal correcting pens ;-P) ready for the arrival of 29 little 6-7 year olds next Thursday. We have 3 training days before that.

Looking forward muchly to the start of the Paralympics next week. My ex pupil, Jason Smyth, was dubbed the "Usain Bolt of the Paralympics" in Beijing, as he won the sprint double by a mile in his class. He made the "B" standard for the 100m in the real Olympics, but Team Ireland only sent those who made the "A" standard. Jason is putting the disappointment of not emulating Pistorius behind him, and is concentrating on defending his titles. I think GB turned Jason down originally, so they will be kicking themselves if he does get double gold again!

In honour of Jason, I'm making a (probably vain) appeal for "BORN TO RUN" for my ARFO choice...

If that doesn't work, what about IT'S THE END OF THE WORLD AS WE KNOW IT (REM).

Just got back from a visit to Formby (Lady_S will know it well) and pleased to report that the native red squirrels there are recovering well from recent disease outbreaks and numbers are increasing well. Vildeen - happy birthday to Mrs V, hope you have had a good day?

Harry - good to see you, if only briefly

AG - have a lovely weekend!

PSL - glad you are having such a good holiday

    Hi Everyone!

Better late than never, she said. Happy 21st Mr & Mrs. P and lovely Vildeen, Happy Birthday to you! Autumn Gale, your trip to Reims sounds fun, lucky you. Hi Harry!
No plans for us as darling husband is flying out Sunday to work a week abroad. Did buy school shoes online, they fit(!), just could not face Bluewater with non-shopping, grumpy boy the week before school starts.
Have a good weekend everyone. :^)
Oh Sir C, I'd like a red one, please.

Although it wasn't a blogger who got the ARFO, I do believe some of our ARFO suggestions have been played tonight on the show.

Off to the airport tomorrow afternoon...........not to go anywhere unfortunately but to collect Mr W who has been down south all week. My turn next..... Sheffield here I come....

  • Comment number 63.

Well done whoever got the ARFO. Good choice too - I missed it though, was the full version played?

Bar's been open for a while - can I get anyone anything?

    ;o)

May I thank you all for your congratulations and good wishes on our 21st. Wedding Anniversary? As I said this morning - I can't believe the years have flown so fast.

May I add my best wishes to Mrs. Vildeen for a Very Happy Birthday? I hope you enjoyed your lunches!

We did - and we broke ALL the rules and had Fish and then MORE FISH - and with Red Wine!

We shared Smoked Haddock Fishcakes with Rocket Leaves & Chilli Dressing - beautifully presented. Then Mr. had Beer-Battered Cod with Chunky Chips and Mushy Peas - the peas were served in a separate dish! I had Mariners' Pie - almost as good as our own - Ha! - Salmon - Pollock - (we think) - Prawns - in a White Wine Creamy Parsley Sauce - Potato - topped with melted cheese - really delicious!

Then we shared a wonderful Banoffee Pie - truly scrumptious!

We were at - Bae Traeth Coch - Red Wharf Bay - and the scenery and the weather were wonderful for a little perambulation afterwards. A lovely afternoon. Thank You God.

In all my happiness I haven't missed the fact that Jennie & Katy have some big stuff coming up. Neither have I missed the fact that Lilac Blue sounds so uptempo.
Love to Jennie & Katy - good on ya Lilac Blue.

It's absolutely chucking it down here and we've heard rummbling thunder. Bank Holiday Weather. We're going to light the wood burner! Don't think we'll eat anything else tonight.

I'm going to play KB and we're going to watch "The Joy of Country" on BBC4 - which is not about loving manure and growing veg. but is a Music prog.

    Have good evenings all.

Hi Deebee - Red Wine for me - thankyou!

I quite like my "rummbling" thunder!

I feel similarly re the EJ weekend.....

  • Comment number 67.

So I wasn't totally wrong about Elton John and ARF - his choons were played for most of the last half hour - I'm glad I'm not going mad! (#1 post)

Have great weekends all - hope the weather stays reasonable for campers and outdoor activists (!)

Anyway, lovely post Billie, love reading about food.

I've already tweeted Deebee with my order, she is a little tardy, no tip for her!

Shona - Glad you are getting hubby back. I heard the wonderful Proclaimers 500 Miles anyway, great choice CBzz.

  • Comment number 69.

Glad thr bar's open and Billie has at long last posted something for me to have for my dinner. I've been starved waiting for her post as I look forward to new delights every night;)

Good morning to anyone out there - damp and cloudy so far

Well it is a Bank Holiday weekend for some of us ;0) - so what should we expect?

    JW

  • Comment number 72.

    Good Morning All

Damp and cloudy here too, Jennie!

  • Comment number 73.

    Good morning Billie

I thought I was all alone here today! The sun is trying to do its thing at the moment but the sky looks very dark 'over Will's mother's' as my nan used to say! We could be in for a soaking!!

    JW

  • Comment number 74.

    Good Morning Everyone

Rain holding off here for now and a very impatient little dogpoppet is causing a riot waiting for his chicken to cook. Bottoms may be spanked ;)

  • Comment number 75.

Ah, don't do that Shona - he only wants his breakfast! ;0)

    JW

  • Comment number 76.

#75 Never, Jennie. I was joking. All eaten up now and 'jection in too. One satisfied little boy now.

  • Comment number 77.

I realise that Shona - when we had puppies, we used to boil up chicken and rice for them, and the fuss and commotion when that was being readied for them was something to behold! Little souls!!

    JW

  • Comment number 78.

#77 Jennie, LOL. He is so keen to get to the chicken that he hardly notices the injection. Job done!

Seems I'm out of favour with Uncle Tony - no shout out so far;(

    Off to the airport...................................

  • Comment number 79.

Went out for lunch with Amelia today. We were disappointed that our table was left uncleared for ages, and that her salad did not contain what it was supposed to. Also, my toastie had one slice of barely toasted bread and another which appeared not to have been toasted at all... Still, it involved no preparation or clearing up!

Lovely walk in the forest today, too, without the forecast rain. The sun shone the whole time - result!

Just noticed on Twitter that Jonathan Edwards is interacting with my former pupil and Paralympic double gold medallist, Jason Smyth! Talked about him in an earlier post here. His American training partner is the rather wonderful Tyson Gay. I read somewhere that some American newspaper filter always changed the surname "Gay" to "Homosexual". How awful for the poor man!

  • Comment number 80.

What a shame about your lunch, perfect-circle.It reminded me of a tiem, only a few weeks ago when my Mr wasn't feeling too well and said he fancied a bowl of soup and some toast for his dinner.

Off I went and prepared it and gave it to him on a tray while I went to do the washing up. After a couple of minutes he called me and asked if there was any reason the toast was only toasted on one side! Well, you can't have everything, can you? ;0)

    #80 - I even remember a t-i-m-e - fingers faster than brain!

    JW

  • Comment number 82.

#80/81 My fingers are faster than my brain too, Jenny! It was indeed a shame about lunch, but the cafe in question is a bit hit and miss. It can be absoutely excellent too!

  • Comment number 83.

#79 When I read your post Perfect_circle, I did wonder if Jennie had a part time job as a cook there but she beat me to it at #80 ;)

I'll need to look out for your former pupil on the telly. How exciting that J. Edwards is tweeting him.

Have nice evenings all. It's chucking it down here. Last week at this time, I arrived home on Cloud 9 *sighs*

  • Comment number 84.

This time last week we were sitting outside to try and cool down. This week, the door is shut and my feet feel positively chilly!

    The glorious weather!

Enjoy the rest of your evenings

Good morning to anyone out there - warm and dry today

Did I hear you get a mensch on Aled Jones' show this morning Shona, under your Sunday name? It was about going to see Ralph McTell in Edinburgh. Are you trying to get a mensch on every show possible - a bit like bagging Monroes (sp?) - climbing mountains in Scotland, I think...... could be wrong..............it has been known!

    JW

  • Comment number 86.

    What a good looking Sunday

Hello ladies [and gents if there are any out there].
You are an absolute star Shona - being a vegetarian yet cooking chicken for your dogpoppet. Woman hath no greater love .. and all that

As it happens - I'm cooking a couple of chickens today. Sent out a reminder yesterday to various family members - along the lines of 'Family roast - Sunday at 2pm'. I received a message at precisely 7.41am this morning from youngest daughter "Yipeeeeee xxxx" Good to see she's still a homegirl.

    :^)

  • Comment number 87.

I looked up spelling and it is Munro, so nearly right!

We had a bit of excitement yesterday evening. Our neighbour shouted over the fence that he had seen a canary fly over his garden and into ours. He borrowed our net which we use for the pond and set off up the garden.

A few minutes later he returned triumphant ............... with a tiny canary in his hand!

Where he put it, I don't know as neither of us has a cage but hopefully it has survived the night. It's chances out in the wild would be minimal, I imagine.

Further updates, as and when available!!

    JW

  • Comment number 88.

Morning everyone. Just about survived the deluge yesterday - no need to water in new plants at least. Can I add my lack of enthusiasm to the EJ day tomorrow ? It isn't that I actually dislike him but he doesn't need any additional exposure.

Sad to hear about Neil Armstrong last night. What a time that was for a 9 year old boy - we were on the verge of voyaging to the stars. Now 40-odd years later, the world isn't that different in many ways. Where are the dilithium crystals when you need them ?

  • Comment number 89.

    Good Morning Everyone

It's a lovely morning here - really sunny and warm. Today might just involve some sitting out! I do LOVE a Sunday!

    How's the Canary, Jennie?

  • Comment number 90.

No news yet - Mr has just gone to retrieve the net from next door.

    JW

  • Comment number 91.

Canary is fine - it is living in another neighbour's hamster cage at the moment!

    JW

  • Comment number 92.

    Ha!

  • Comment number 93.

Glad to hear about the canary. Jennie, it wasn't me this morning - sorry to disappoint but a colleague and I like to do celebrity bagging. Tee hee; (I'm winning although she did once kiss Jon Pertwee - on the cheek. So perhaps she is winning?)

  • Comment number 94.

I once held open the door of Liberty's in Regent Street for Diana Rigg and she didn't even say "Thank You"

Manners, I thought. (And other things ;0 )

#94 The cheek of some people!

  • Comment number 96.

Shona - I don't know what "celebrity bagging" is! Does it involve putting famous people in black bin liners?

Stuart Hall - yes - that one - once knocked over my glass of wine in a BBC bar and he did say sorry - but didn't offer to buy me another! Does that count? And I've met Roy Castle, Kevin Keegan, George Melly and the Liverpool Beat Poets - but not all at the same time!

Been a lovely day in the garden - it's clouding over a bit now though and going chillier ................

Evening all. Nice & sunny here if a tad windy. Hope those who suffered thunder storms and/or flooding are safe & well.

In the midst (and chaos) of packing to come home. Fly home for the final time on Friday. While I am more than happy to be heading home I will be sad to leave. 11 months has flown by so quickly. Hope to be around more regularly from next week.

haven't been able to catch up. Hope all the news is good news.
