Socks and Muppets...

Simon Mayo | 10:24 UK time, Thursday, 15 March 2012

Good morning young bloggers. Thursday dawning mild here with some real springlike temperatures expected. It may even be time to venture into the spring wardrobe today (thinner cardigan and socks). I intend to cut a sartorial dash across Radio 2 today.
(One hour later) Now revising my rash statement of warmth as clearly the fog is freezing and actually thicker socks are needed. It's all so confusing.

Thick socks needed for The Hunger Games (I know that's tenuous but if you wear thick boots to run for your life from a wild kid, then you'll need the socks. Just go with it.). Early screening yesterday to interview Jennifer Lawrence and was not disappointed. It is the grimmest 12A really but for all the right treasons. You have a knot in the pit of your stomach for the last hour which is quite appropriate given the savage nature of the film. Child 2&3 both declared it to be a hit and predict an uptake in interest in archery very soon. See film for details.

Loved meeting the Tops and the Temps yesterday. Duke Fakir and Otis Williams looked exactly like you'd hope Motown legends would look. Elegant clothes, bling (but too much) and big smiles to go with their their big back catalogue of hits. They moved and grooved to each others songs like they were recorded yesterday.

And oldies...well how about MUPPET songs please. You can have this 2 ways really. 'Muppets' is what, according to the article in the New York Times, clients are called by managing directors at Goldman Sachs. Or you can have the traditional Muppets: Fozzy, Kermit, Miss Piggy, Animal et al. MUPPET oldies will do I think.
Have a spring-like (but prepared for wintry moments) Thursday, see you after 5

    Ahhhhhh, there you are!

    Good morning everyone.

It was great yesterday to see Sir Dave Richards joining in the discussion about British culture with his advice to the Qataris. Having read his opinions, perhaps I should add a pool of stale vomit and a half-eaten kebab to the window display?

As for today’s theme, here’s a, somewhat tangential, suggestion:

#43 Getting your hosepipe out? Now that is just plain showing off ;)

  • Comment number 45.

This is quite amusing. A couple of days ago Mr B got one of those bogus callers - the sort that tell you there is a problem with your computer. He was a bit bored so decided to string the guy along a bit. Eventually the bogus caller (BC) said "So then, I just need your credit card details". The ensuing conversation went something like this:

Mr B: Er, I'm afraid I don't have a credit card at the moment. Can I send you a cheque?

BC: I suppose so. I'll need your payment card number though

Mr B: I usually write that on the back of the cheque

    BC: (reluctantly) Okay...

Mr B: So if you'd just give me an address to send the cheque to, I'll pop it in the post to you today

BC: (gives a name and address in London)

Mr B: Thank you very much. Right, I'll just pass that on to the police and trading standards authority...

    BC (hangs up)

    ;o)

#27 #31 I think we might need an extra bench. And more nibbles...

Just one suggestion from me today:

    I'm A Marionette - Abba.

    That is all :)

  • Comment number 52.

#45 Nice one - RE fake callers....
I had one recently telling me on the phone that my bank had overcharged me and they wanted to have my account details to get a cheque paid in...I refused my account number etc - and asked for a call back phone number to check them out (suprise suprise it was a dud number) as their number on my display was 'unavailable'.
Who on earth is going to give out bank account details over the phone to a random person calling from another country....

The Bechod Bench is much more comfy than the naughty step, by the way - plumped cushions, spirits on tap, I quite enjoy my evenings on there ;-)

  • Comment number 53.

#52 Who cares? We're too busy having fun on the Naughty Step to worry about comfort ;-)

  • Comment number 54.

    Afternoon all!

Having waited ages for the new blog, life got in the way........

It has turned absolutely gorgeous here after the foggy, cold start. Very warm - lunch in the garden weather. Unfortunately, I then had to work indoors - a job application required some tweaking of my CV. All done now, so can go and play outside. Just need to decide whether I do weeding in the garden or plant tomatoes in the greenhouse........

Happy birthday Tortie! Enjoy Sweeney Todd.

I prefer the Naughty Step to the Bechod Bench ;)

  • Comment number 55.

#45 Deebee... I had a call like your husband had, a few weeks ago telling me that I had a problem with my computer and how he could help me and just needed my credit card details, so I let him ramble on for a while then said to him that I didn't own a computer and he put the phone down!

One day when I was staying with my sister and her husband, their phone went and my brother-in-law, who loves a laugh, picked it up and I then heard him say "You'll have to speak to my wife... I'll go and get her. In the meantime I'm putting you on hold" and he laid the phone beside the radio in the kitchen that was turned on.

After a short while, he picked up the phone and said "Sorry to keep you waiting, I'm still trying to find my wife" and the next time he went back to the phone, the caller had gone!

What I sometimes do if a double-glazing or kitchen person etc rings up, is to say "Hang on a moment, I'll go and get my husband" and I leave the phone on the table or walk round with it in my pocket until they have given up!

#67 I haven't slept with Mick Hucknall either....

Rosie flushed out a lady pheasant this morning. I am not sure who was more terrified! Miss Pheasant was almost twice the size of Miss Mogpoppet. Yesterday's shrew was a way more appropriate size (if not an appropriate snack).

Hiya Billie! What a treat - a surprise lunch!

I've also taken advantage of the glorious weather since my previous message and walked along the lane beside me and up and around a big hill that overlooks the sea with a lovely 360 degree view... water on one side and countryside everywhere else with bursts of bright yellow in places with the broom that's flowering at the moment.

#22 – Coffeebuzz – there is nothing like your first mensh! You’ll remember it all your life!

#71 – Alex – It was delightful! In the past we have had Peppered Steak – make it ourselves – but this was Peppered Chicken – in a Cream & White Wine Sauce - Green Peppercorns – where will I get them? – Crushed Potatoes or Lumpy Mash! – however you wish to describe it - Roasted Courgettes - Roasted Toms. still on the Vine! Exquisite! Such big helpings! We DID share a pudding – A Crème Brulee – but that doesn’t describe it – it was freezing cold lemon ice-cream with the crunchy Brulee topping! My! My! My!

BTW – You were right – Billy/Billie/Gledding/Gladding – is not me! I don’t tweet and have never sent a text in my life!

Lovely blogpoppets, I'm after a favour. I'm going out tonight (nothing exciting, just popping round to some friends) so I'll miss the Masterchef final. I'm recording it to watch tomorrow evening, but my enjoyment will obviously be somewhat spoiled if I already know the winner (as happened last year when Chris Evans mentioned it on the radio...). So if anyone is watching it tonight, please could you refrain from discussing it on here tomorrow... As it is, I'm having to avoid Twitter, FB, any news bulletins, etc... Merci buckets

    :o)

What an incredibly boring song! Fools' Gold!

    Oh John! Sorry!

#80 Might be safer if you just don't read any posts. Certainly, if Shalina wins, I will be gloating!! But, I will do my best nt to say a word.

Actually, we are out all day (Valentines Day lunch which was delayed due to uncle's funeral) so unlikely to be here. You are safe from me!!

#82 I did consider that as an option Alex, but it would be a shame not to be able to join in with the other banter. Maybe if folks could put a spoiler alert at the top of the post if they're going to talk about MC.

@Deebee, I won't be watching so you can read my posts without fear of me spoiling it for you.

Can I just confirm what Simon just said about Michael Kiwanuka; the album is superb :-)

    Evening Poppeteers

Well, I have had the "Animals" Muppet song going round and round and round in my head - Thanks Jilly! Manamana.

Love the telephone call for bank details stories!! Mr W and I will certainly remember those for the future.

Deebee, no fear of reading my posts as I don't watch Masterchef. X

Re the Ken Barlow story - if any of you are on Twi**er, ther is someone called I Am Ken Barlow (who obviously isn't) but he tweets some very funny tweets and is also followed Melanie Sykes. (Maybe she is one of the 1000!) Yikes, Sykes!

    Good Morning Poppeteers

#87 Gazza. Can't you make enquiries as to how long you'll have to wait for this darn card?? The time it has taken seems quite unacceptable to me.

No hose ban required here as it has been raining for most of the night spoiling any chance of catching a glimpse of Venus and Jupiter. Has anyone else seen them?

A day in the office beckons so I'll see you for an ARFO chase hopefully, later.

    Morning all

Thank you, Sir, for the mensh last night for the "incredibly boring" Fools Gold song (according to Billie). And I hope all those people apparently "behind me" weren't pulling funny faces or wiggling their fingers to give me pointy ears.

I missed the final of Masterchef last night, so I'll be joining Deebee in the soundproof room with headphones on, as used on Mr and Mrs, Family Fortunes, and The Exit List (I hope there's enough room)

See you soon on the sparkling new ARFO blog.

    Good morning,

#79 Billie, Somehow it doesn't seem right that tt's only just gone 9 and I'm salivating over your creme brulee. Pure food porn. Best bolt me to the bechod bench.

#80 Debbee, Anything for you my lovely :-)

    #88 Morning Shona.

Off to a toddler group shortly but will try to come and play later.

    Have a good day.x

    Morning everyone

Sunny and dry again today and unlike Shona, we have had no rain here for quite a while and I remember what it's like over in the west as we used to live in Largs where it rained a lot... thankfully it's much drier on the east coast!

I loved the final of Masterchef last night and I hope Deebee wasn't listening to Chris Evans this morning!!!

See you on the next blog.

    xx

    Morning all,

Dull start here but I've just been watching two green woodpeckers do an amazing head bopping courtship (?) dance around my garden. Great stuff.

I'm sure that the lovely Matt from BAIU (*waves*) said that the boffins would have the boxes banished by now? They are still plaguing me. I thought maybe that is why it is so quiet in these parts.

Thank you Simon for my mensh for The Doobie Brothers last night.

    See you over the page.
    Jx
