Simon Mayo | 07:58 UK time, Wednesday, 29 February 2012

Hi folks. Not here today as its book launch day and ALL launches have to be between 6.30 and 8.30. It's in the rules. So Matt, Rebecca and Sal and heading over after the show, and will just miss my fabulously witty and dry speech.
Liza in charge and then back tomorrow for World Book Day. Be good to Ms Tarbuck and see you Thursday.
And keep the blog rolling!

    Good Morning Everyone

It's rather grey here but there's plenty of time for it to brighten up.

What a rather splendid man is Mr. Mayo! Taking the time to post a blog on such a busy day! Wishing him all the best!

    Hello All

Good luck with the launch Simon!

Hope eveyone else has a good day and the poorly poppets are feeling better.

Work horrid at present, for more reasons than one, so better get back to it.

    Good Morning All (again!)

Didn't expect a blog this morning - how very thoughtful of you, Simon! We bloggers do appreciate the extra effort you put in on our behalf, and we will all be with you in spirit at the book launch this evening. Hope all goes well (glad to see the DT team will be turning up to support you!) and I'm sure Itch will be a great success.

Busy day for me today, but I will try and pop in when I can. Our leader has made the effort - we should too!

I wonder if Simon ever gets Green Boxed when he tries to blog? Already been thwarted by the monster a couple of times here.... have you given up Matt from BAIU?

Sorry, manners! Good Morning Simon, team and lovely blogsters.

Thank you so much Simon for taking the time to set us off on a new page on your day off and good luck with the launch, I'm sure your speech will knock 'em dead! :)

It is my lovely Mister's 12th Birthday today, so thought I would bring along a cake for anyone who wants a little something for elevenses later :)

    Morning all

Sorry not been around much asbeen both busy and poorly - in that order.

Hope everything goes well the the launch, does this mean Matt will be nursing a bad head again tomorrow, as seems to happen everytime when you go out.

Major preparations in our house for World Book Day, as the daughter wants to better her ladybird costume from last year. So new duffle coat, wellies, small brown suitcase, and marmalade have now been acquired, as well as a large black hat. Can you tell who she's going as?

Happy 12th birthday to Jilly's mister! Must say, he looks a little older than that...;o) Thanks for the cake.

What do people born on the 29th February normally do? Do they celebrate on the 28th three years out of 4?

#6 Hi Andy, nice to 'see' you and I hope you're feeling better. Would your daughter's costume be anything to do with a small bear connected with a London railway station, by any chance...?

    ~X~

Simon, I hope you enjoy your book launch experience!

I expect you have already seen this Deebee, but for anyone who hasn't, 53 pages of Itch can be read here...

The cover looks very striking and should stand out really well on book shelves and I hope it sells really well for him.

#8 Simon tweeted that the first two chapters were available to read and that we owed him a drink. As an Arsenal fan I was tempted to tweet back that I'd see him in the bar at 5-2...

Guess I'll have to change my blog name now if I want any more menshes...

    Hello DB

#7 It is indeed - we even have a label saying 'please look after this bear, thank you'

I do worry that we're just storing up problems for next year, if we need to better it, what next a full blown Gruffalo?

Don't know if people have heard about Chris Evan's attempt to organise a Car Festival for Children in Need, but there is talk of bloggers hoping to get involved in some way, maybe stewarding.

So any blogpoppets, who may like cars or festivals, it could be just your thing.

Hmmm, on my never ending mission the beat the three minute delay thingy wotnot, I tried an idea posted during a discussion with Baggy next door.

Despite the green box putting in a brief appearance, I still failed to beat the system.

    Thinking cap back on!

Enjoying this bonus February day. Another afternoon out on the estuary. Yesterdays exciting sightings were...

Pintails, Shoveller ducks (impressive beaks) Godwits, Curlews (both also with mighty impressive beaks) Brent Geese, Redshanks, Cormorants, Teal, Wigeon, not to mention the usual every day sightings.

Still waiting for the excitement of the first sandmartins to arrive.

    What a wonderful world.

    Happy days, happy days indeed.

Now its gone 11, can I have a slice of cake now Jilly. Happy Birthday to your lovely Mister.

Hello again. Thank you for the unexpected blog Mr Mayo - hope your launch goes well today. Looking forward to hearing about it during the show tomorrow.

Deebee - I liked your description of how it might be!

From yesterday's blog - Billie and Deebee - #116 & 7? - it wasn't so much the short bursts of cycling that got me it was the bit about 'the chair is the killer'. Made me think about how much time I spend on my bottom and how I should be moving a bit more!

#3 - Mrs Boris - sorry to hear that work is not great at the moment. Hope the situation improves soon.

#6 & 13 - Hi Andy - I like the sound of the book day costume!

#5 - Jilly - being as slow as I am, I thought there must have been a mis-type of your mister's age but then realised what day it is - sorry! Happy birthday to him and hope you both have a great day.

#14 - Sal (if I may) - I just love your nature descriptions. Just blackbirds and pigeons here and if we are lucky, the odd wagtail.

Finally - Deebee - hope all goes well for your mum today.

Off to walk dogs and visit my mum and SF. Back later maybe...

  • Comment number 18.

    Morning all!

Sion, what a champ you are thinking of us on what must be quite a nerve-wracking day for you. Hope all goes well!

Deebee, fingets crossed that your Mum's op goes ahead and she doesn't have to endure more delays. Am sure it will all go swimmingly!

Jilly, happy 12th birthday to your Mister!!! (Think I have worked out his real age! Must be a bit like cat/dog years!!)

AndyT - good to see you! Costume for your girl sounds great. If we had to dress up as book characters for school, my Mum had a singular lack of imagination and I was always Alice in Wonderland. One year I threw a wobbly and so I went as Amy from Little Women. She looks like Alice in Wonderland.

Sal, sounds like you are making the most of things! Happy days indeed.

JBG, if you are lurking, thanks for the mole advice. I will definitely wear gloves - especially if handling cat poo!

All set for interview. Taxi at 1.15, train at 1.45, tube at 3pm, interview at 4pm. Coming home with Mr P. Hope cats will be okay but have to leave them some time. Or I could take them to work? Rosie hasn't got up yet today which is most unlike her. She is snuggled up with my cuddly dog on my side of the bed. Bless.

Right, I have to try to remember how to put make-up on. And tights. And shoes. Really can't wear my wellies.............

#18 Hello Alex - Nice to 'see' you again as well, hope everything goes well this afternoon. I'm sure your work brain will click back into place and you'll impress them as ever.

The daughter's school are quite encouraging and offer a prize for the best in each class. Her best friend is going as an Alien, from Aliens love underpants, which should be fun. Also one of the year 6's is going as Warhorse, with simulated barbed wire, so competition will be tough!

Grrrr... that green box again!!!! :o(

Hope all goes well for your mum, Deebee and happy birthday to Jilly's young mister.

I have just ordered the Kindle version of Simon's book for an extra pressie for my avid reader husband's birthday, only £6.45 too! After reading the reviews on Amazon, it sounds like it will be a change from his Wilbur Smith, James Patterson, Ian Rankin type books and I might just take a peep too!

MTF, you're like me and love the seabirds and especially the variety of birds who gather along the shoreline, and I love seeing Curlews and Oystercatchers in the field in front of our house sometimes or in the local park. Just as you're waiting for the sand martins, at this time of the year we eagerly await the return of the beautiful gannets and already there are quite a few on the Bass Rock as you can see from this live webcam, but before long, there will be thousands of Gannets returning to breed and the rock will be covered with them.

    Live webcam: http://www.seabird.org/webcam-live.asp

We have the Scottish Seabird Centre at our local harbour with several webcams on the Bass Rock, Isle of May, Craigleith and Fidra islands that can be operated in the centre by visitors and it's always exciting to see the seals on the Isle of May.

    Afternoon all

Brilliant gig last night at the Islington Academy. When a band is so brilliant as Kathleen Edwards' band is, live music is just about the best thing there is. Deebee, the venue is easy to find, right out of Angel tube, v short walk up Upper Street, entry to N1 "shopping Centre" is between some shops on the other side of the road, opposite a big pub. Entry to Academy 1 is ground floor, Academy 2 on 1st floor.

Just back from the doctors, having been unable to shake off what feels like a chesty cough for 3 weeks. Doctor listens to chest, then proceeds to tell me that although they listen to the chest, non-smokers rarely get chest infections so he knew it would be clear (it was) and I have the most common cause of a persistent cough.

Result: Ken leaves doctors with tail between legs and feeling as though doctor's time has just been wasted!

Hi Everyone, long time no speak but that's not to say I have not read the blog, in my humble opinion I had nothing of interest for input.

Hope you have a wonderful evening Simon and that it is all you wish for yourself and that Matt, Rebecca & Sal behave!

Looking forward (sorry Simon) to listening with interest to Liza again, so welcome back Liza hope you enjoy your day/evening too.

    Hi Simon and everyone.

Late to the gathering i'm afraid as mad busy trying to achieve this audit plan at Redditch Council and have stepped up job search again as this contract ends on 31st March.

Ditto #2 Billie, what a smashing man Simon is for blogging on his launch day. good luck Simon, as if you need it as it will be a roaring success...I can envisage the the film already!!!

And yes Deebee, I think we should make the effort to blog today as Simon has made the effort. Good luck to your mum today!

Happy birthday to Mr Jilly ( and not a teenager yet!) 48 per chance?

Good luck Alex G with your interview.

Does Simon mean the oldies is "World Book day" tomorrow? I thought he may choose St David's day!

Anyway, have a lovely afternoon all.

Are people still having problems blogging?

Thanks for the best wishes for my Mum - you are all lovely! She's not due to be operated on till this evening, so I probably won't get any news until later on tonight.

#18 Alex - good luck for this afternoon. I'm sure you'll wow them. Just remember, when they ask 'do you have any questions for us' to mention your requirement for regular blogging time... ;o)

#26 Hi Sharon! Please don't feel you need to wait until you have something interesting to say before joining in - the rest of us certainly don't hold back!

#27 Mandy, who knows what the theme will be tomorrow? I've given up trying to guess it in advance. Too many times I've been prepared with a list of song suggestions only to be foiled with a totally unexpected theme! And one of the challenges I think is trying to come up with something original fairly quickly (which I usually have to do anyway, as work gets in the way)

    Good Afternoon All :)

I didn't have time to blog yesterday, because twin two's assessment period at the hospital has come to an end, so we were preparing for his homecoming, and making the arrangements for his return to school etc.

How thoughtful of Simon, to offer up a mini-blog on his big day, but then that's the kind of top bloke he is. I hope all goes well for the book launch, and that it's a big success (but not so much that he turns full-time writer and leaves Drivetime...)

Heads up for anyone interested, and near a TV - Simon is on the Alan Titchmarsh show this afternoon on ITV1 between 3 - 4pm, I suppose it will be available on ITV player later, for those at work, or otherwise engaged.

Deebee- Hope all goes well with your mum today xx

Jilly - Happy 12th Birthday to your toy boy ;D

Hope everyone else is tickerty boo xx

Does anyone know roughly what time Simon will be on Steve Wright's show this afternoon and if could we email any questions for him, or would the interview have already been recorded?

  • Comment number 38.

#37 Florence - Simon mentioned in his blog (last Friday) that he had recorded his chat with Steve already, for transmission today (maybe clashing with his Alan Titchmarsh appearance!) I think SW usually has the guest interviews at around 3:30 & 4:30pm.

  • Comment number 39.

Thanks Zoe... I missed hearing Simon saying he's already recorded his Steve Wright interview and I'll have to stay and watch Alan Titchmarsh too and I was going to go out and cut the grass.... I'll do it later!

#32 Welcome to the blog CyndyC! Autographing a Kindle book might be a bit tricky, LOL! You might have to splash out on a hard copy... mind you I haven't heard of Simon doing any book signings, although he did mention on the Mumsnet webchat that he would be attending some literary festivals.

    Hello all,

Sorry to those of you still having problems posting.

It seems the green and pink boxes are also causing frustration for people commenting on some of the BBC's news blogs. It looks like the same issue, but we still don't know why it's happening.

Frustratingly, every time we test the issue through our 'test blog', it works fine.

And because the issue is so intermittent, it is proving difficult to track down what's going wrong (despite your bug reports, all of which we've reviewed and are most grateful for).

Thanks again for your patience - there are a couple of people working on this as we speak.

Bless you Simon, a blog today on your Drivetime night off! Wishing you all the very best this evening on the book launch. Very exciting stuff.

#9 Loved the little artistic 'flourish' there, Flo. Very impressed.

Hope the interview went well, Alex.

Deebs, wishing your Mum all the best this evening.

MTF- sorry I can't break the habit- should I just call you Sal? ;-) I thought of you this morning when I walked down into the fields to see to my chickens and pony. At 5.45 the owls (little and tawny's) were competing with the robins, blackbirds and my cockerel for best soloists in the dawn chorus. Absolutely magical it was. As we have said before, the sound of blackbirds singing at this time of year is just the best. Hope you spot the sand martins soon.

I have been incredibly busy this week at work, usual end of month stuff, and the weekend is looking hectic too, both children back from Uni as it is my daughters 20th on Saturday! I know, I look far too young!! ;-) Her actual due date was 29th, but she stayed put as we moved house that day, and obliged us all by arriving 3 days later!

Now after typing all that, let's see if I get one of these green/pink boxes..........

Surprise blog from Simon today although I haven't lifted my head above work all day. The price you pay for having a few days off I expect. Hope Simon's speech goes well at the book launch though.

Thanks also to BAIU for fixing the blog and letting us know about it too. Much appreciated.

  • Comment number 64.

I wasn't a fan of The Monkees but I feel sad hearing Davy Jones has passed away so suddenly. I have copied these comments from his fellow band members from an American friend who is a member of a forum for Gary Puckett.

From Micky Dolenz – “I am in a state of shock; Davy and I grew up together and shared in the unique success of what became The Monkees phenomena. The time we worked together and had together is something I'll never forget. He was the brother I never had and this leaves a gigantic hole in my heart. The memories have and will last a lifetime. My condolences go out to his family.”

From Peter Tork – "It is with great sadness that I reflect on the sudden passing of my long-time friend and fellow-adventurer, David Jones. His talent will be much missed; his gifts will be with us always. My deepest sympathy to Jessica and the rest of his family. Adios, to the Manchester Cowboy..."

From Michael Nesmith - "All the lovely people. Where do they all come from? So many lovely and heartfelt messages of condolence and sympathy, I don't know what to say, except my sincere thank you to all. I share and appreciate your feelings. But let's not get ahead of ourselves here. While it is jarring, and sometimes seems unjust, or ...strange, this transition we call dying and death is a constant in the mortal experience that we know almost nothing about. I am of the mind that it is a transition and I carry with me a certainty of the continuity of existence. While I don't exactly know what happens in these times, there is an ongoing sense of life that reaches in my mind out far beyond the near horizons of mortality and into the reaches of infinity. That David has stepped beyond my view causes me the sadness that it does many of you. I will miss him, but I won't abandon him to mortality. I will think of him as existing within the animating life that ensures existence. I will think of him and his family with that gentle regard in spite of all the contrary appearances on the mortal plane. David's spirit and soul live well in my heart, among all the lovely people, who remember with me the good times, and the healing times, that were created for so many, including us. I have fond memories. I wish him safe travels."

So sad to hear of the death of Davy Jones. Another one who died far too young... I used to love the Monkees TV show as a child.

Matt from BAIU, thanks for your efforts in trying to rid us of the pesky green and red boxes. I had the green one just now when I logged back on. At least we know it's not just us!

I have news of my Mum - she has had the operation, the hospital phoned about an hour ago and said she was back on the ward and doing well. I'll try and speak to her tomorrow morning before I leave for work. Thanks once again to everyone who's sent well wishes - it's a real comfort and so lovely to have all your support!

Hi Gazza - We must stop meeting like this!

Have you sorted your tablets? I worry about you! I really do! I dreamt about you the other night. You were in a swimming pool - you were drowning - gasping for breath - singing "Barbie Doll" ! Ha!

Going to post a long post - hopefully .............

    Evening again …………..

Florence – Sincere thanks for your trouble in posting the quotes about Davy Jones. The one from Mike Nesmith was very moving.

My husband is 12 years younger than me – I seduced him – by the way – so he was too young to have experienced The Monkees first time around – but I wasn’t – and I was there to watch their TV shows – how funny, zany, anarchic, inventive, warm and friendly!

Actually there was a show, which wouldn’t be allowed now, where, at the end, they “out” a Cameraman – and another show in which they “mince” “Deck The Halls”!

But they covered all topics – misunderstandings, insecurity, prejudice, lovelessness.

Then they have been described as non-musicians and yet history has proven them to be the opposite and I shall post again what I posted at Christmas – a cappella –

Oh My My My! Another part of my youth has just gone!

As George said “All things must pass ……………”

Do you know something infuriating about this blog? I am typing this late at night cos I can’t be here in the day! Am I just talking to myself? Will anyone read this? Will everyone just get so involved in menshchasing that they won’t bother to read back?

Please let me know – even if you totally disagree!

Katy – miss you – you read the blog!

Deebee – so glad to hear about your mum!

Billie, you're not here talking to yourself... I'm here to read your message and am not just here for menshchasing!

How nice to have a toyboy husband! Mine is two years older than me so I've no idea what it must be like having someone 12 years younger, but as 'generally' (not always) men seem to die at a younger age than women, I'm sure than you and he will stand a better chance of growing old together, especially if you were around here, where there seems to be an abundance of elderly ladies, including a large group of veteran lady golfers who are all over 80-years of age and play regularly!

i havent been swimming for years i did go in the pool when on holiday but just chilling out, when i was younger i used 2 go to the swimming baths every week in watford and when i first went the people round the pool (lifegards)were george micheal and andrew ridgley before thay became wham,i remember george as he had girly hair then and wore tight shorts,he also worked in the local cinema as well.

i havent sorted my tablets out yet i might go and put my prescribtion in the box 4 the doctor on satuday and collect on tuesday when i have another jab done, just hope my prepaid card arrives by then.

i just looked up davy jones and he was ena sharpels grandson in corrie.

am i the only person who thinks people who do reality shows thinks thay are now experts on things, like doing a cook book etc...because thay were in a cooking show.

#71 Billie, I read it even when I don't have something to say. Mensh-chasing is only a secondary pleasure for me :-)

See you on the new blog.

Or back here if it's a late one.

    Good Morning Poppeteers

So glad to hear your mumis doing well Deebee and look forward to hearing of her continued progress today.

Billie, like others have said, choon and menche chasing is only a side line for me. I enjoy reading and chatting with all you lovely folks and realised when I had to take leave of absence last week for a few days, that I am a blog addict. Cold turkey was not pleasant. Twitching fingers to get on the laptop all the time is a scary thing. Tee hee. X

See you on the next page.

    Morning all

Billie - message received. I think, like most people on here, we read a lot that we don't always comment on. But over the course of time it all add to the rich tapestry of blogland as we paint pictures of each other's events and thoughts and opinions and feelings. (Sorry to mix my metaphors)

Anyway, lovely sunny day, happy March and happy St David's Day everyone. (Confession - I've only been to Wales once. But I've only been to Scotland once, and Ireland once - but not NI - so there's no special bias!)

See you on the fresh new page. There might be a few sore heads, methinks.

Oh, I also discovered last night that Sky's Challenge channel, which is showing Blockbuster, is available on Freeview.

Sorry Deebee, forgot to say, that's really good news about your mum. Love, hugs, goodvibes.

And Matt of the BAIU, thanks for your efforts. And yes, it's really erratic. And yes, it's still happening.
