Robbo Robson | 15:26 UK time, Monday, 24 May 2010

All right chaps 'n lasses. This is it. Robbo's last BBC blog. It's been about nine years so summat had to give. There's a lot of people I'd like to thank and a few I'd like to smack with a hot parmo.

But it's not over. Robbo carries on, only in a place where you work-shy scoundrels can't get it past your officee filters. I still expect your full attention.

Not least 'cos the final team to get promoted provides an opportunity for a truly gut-wrenchingly clichéd last effort as a Towering Blackpool team gave the Bluebirds a little Eyeful and will illuminate the top league after Holloway's bunch of donkeys (according to the bookies' pre-season odds) triumphed.

But football's mandarins will be delighted to see the Tangerines back in the big time. Yes, the football fates have conspired to keep something orange in the Premier League despite Phil Brown's departure from Hull a while back. I've not liked that colour since we was beaten in the 2005 Uefa Cup final by Seville.
Blackpool fansBlackpool fans are living the Tangerine dream
On a budget that made any Osbornian cuts look like chicken-feed, with record buy Charlie Adam costing about three weeks of Emmanuel Adebayor's wages, and a manager whose asides were better than his actual sides, there can't have been anyone backing them - but the tide turned for the Seasiders.

Aw crikey, that's enough of that.

It was a brilliant first half, enhanced by some right dodgy goalkeeping. And yes, Blackpool will get an absolute pasting in the top tier, but that's hardly the point really. The owner isn't going to be flashing his cash around - and the fans are going to be realistic too.

I noticed a lot of 'em wearing Play-Off Final 2010 T-shirts - no mention of victory on them whatsoever, as if getting there was enough. But you've got to say that these play-offs are the most brilliant way to end a season. Always thrilling, constantly surprising and rarely predictable. Much like this blog. Ahem.

As for the Champions League final, well it was right predictable. Van Gaal and Robben tried their best to tempt Mourinho into playing 2-3-5. It was like trying to lure a blind hermit out of his cave with a copy of Heat magazine.

Jose must positively gag on the notion of more than one up front. So it was that Inter rested back on that reliable rearguard and sniped on the break, with the lad Milito coming up trumps again. Is it me or is Mourinho simply a high-achieving George Graham clone with a better publicist?

He's got them smouldering good looks (that's the wife talking) and a team that's tighter
than my mate Tony Thompson.

Trouble is, will it be enough for the Bernabeu regulars? 'Cos there's no doubt he can put together a team to beat Barca and even lift the big prize a third time, but Mourinho's Real's going to be about as fancy as a Yorkshireman's pint-pot.

Plus the bloke likes to be in charge and doesn't mind being unpopular. I can't see the next manager at Inter being quite so bumptious as to ignore Italian footballers.

At the Bernabeu, Florentino Perez is not exactly the most pragmatic of purchasers when it comes to footy. You sometimes get the impression that Perez would rather win a keepy-uppy competition than a footy match. And it's fair to say that a lot of recent coaches at Real have been scrubbing the decks rather than holding the tiller.

Mourinho will win things, but it won't be off the back of a bunch of one-touch step-over merchants - he'll do it his way. It's not a comfy fit.

In the meantime, England have their latest trot out on the Wembley surface, and having watched a lot of people get dragged through holes in the ground on Doctor Who last week, I fear for our boys. Until I saw this Wembley I reckoned there were any number of candidates up for being the most useless sod in English football.

Every time I think of the pitch, I just want to go down me local garden centre and have a good word with someone. You've more chance of keeping your feet paddling in a pond of piranhas.
Groundsmen work on Wembley pitch
Wembley has witnessed several pitch battles
Blackpool's Taylor-Fletcher swapped his boots more time than my missus before a night out and still managed to get tangled up in the knotweed or whatever it is they're using to surface the great stadium.

I was talking about my frustrations with me son Darren and he insisted that these days you can grow as good grass here as anywhere in the world. Not that I know how he'd know. He knows nowt about lawns. He's just a part-time courier.

Any road, this blog's beginning to wilt in this summer sunshine. Besides which I'm welling up a bit, you know.

Ta to all the boys at the Beeb who've had to wrestle with these blogs, especially the mighty Chris Charles. And to all the legal eagles who have toiled to give this bouffant afro of a blog a right good two on the top and one at the sides every so often. Probably 'cos they had to.

To think that this great nation of ours will have to make do with going to http://robborobson.blogspot.com for its future entertainment.
Or making do with getting updates from http://twitter.com/robbo_robson
No more the little cartoon fella. It's the real me.

Here's hoping we'll meet at the next fork in the road. In the meantime, there's a pint getting warm in the best beer garden in Great Britain, a World Cup to enjoy and a few pencils to sharpen in anticipation of an utterly independent blog later in the week.

Raise a beer to Robbo while you're watching our boys slip and slide like newborn foals on Monday evening.

The new blog's up on Thursday. Just not here.
God bless the lot of yer. C'mon England.

There are certain bloggers and commentators on this website who we can see and hear on MOTD, or in the daily press. And quite frankly they're not as good. Out of all the reams of guff written about Mourinho and the champions league final, Robbo's comment that he's George Graham with a better publicist cuts through all the nonsense and tells it as it is.

I consider insight to be a valuable commodity, and delivered with humour doubly so.

Seeing as this is your final on the bbc I will drop the "Robbo" pretense for just a moment if I may Niall.

I think I can guess at the reasons behind the decision to discontinue the blog. You could argue, as occasionally I have done in the past, that the blog has simply run its course and become stale. But in truth I dont think this is the reason. If it were a case of diminishing or outright poor quality then the likes of McNulty would have been axed long before yourself. I would guess the bbc want a departure away from the unmoderated commenting which was crucial to the success of the blog. The issue with John Terry highlighted the reluctance of the bbc to really allow itself to be dragged into such allegations and something like the "Robbo" blog was always going to be problematic in this regard.

I am curious though, as to why you have decided to continue the blog elsewhere (assuming you will not be paid to do so). I was often unsure of how much you actually enjoyed doing the "Robbo" blogs as sometimes they came across as rushed and unmotivated but your willingness to carry on with it would be at odds with this suggestion. Perhaps its just more in line with keeping it for the regular followers.

Curiosity will probably get the better of me and I may drop in and see what changes and improvements you decide to initiate with the blog which I assume will be free of any restrictions or parameters that might have been held by the bbc.

All in all Niall, your blog has often frustrated me if I am to be honest. But it did offer the potential for a reasonable forum for debate superior to anything else offered by the bbc. Whatever the reasons behind the decision to discontinue the blog, I think its hard to justify it in the face of allowing sub par work from McNulty and co to continue unchecked. Given the nature of the blog and the evolution of the comments page perhaps the bbc was not the best forum for the Robbo in any event so the blog may well be better served somewhere else. With this in mind I bid you good luck in your future blogging career and as mentioned above, I may occaisionally drop in and offer some commentary.

Robbo Robson | 14:46 UK time, Thursday, 31 July 2008
Freddie Flintoff said this week that what kept him going was the belief that in the end he would wear the three lions of England once more.

Now he's got them on he must be wondering whether he's not wearing three monkeys cos sometimes you'd think the selectors had seen no people, heard no people and spoken to no people about who to pick. Not only can you play 11 games in county cricket and be Australian and line up alongside Fred, but you can have a first-class average this season of under 9 and bat higher than him.

England were dire on the first day. You could bleat at the dismissals of KP and Vaughan but you know what, Vaughan didn't have to play and KP was lbw any road.

Funnily enough they got the balance of the team right this time, but the wrong people.

It's fast become an old chums' club that would be embarrassing enough if it were my local park team but in international colours it's a joke. Collingwood is shot right now. He may be a nice bloke and the others might have been gutted for him but hellfire Philip Schofield seems a decent sort but I wouldn't back him to get 10 against the South Africans either!

They say form is temporary but class is permanent and class is exactly where Colly needs to go, permanently, if he thinks he can KP a ball from outside off-stump through midwicket. I mean I'm all for continuity but not if it means continuing being cack.

Keeping Ambrose in is a flaming mystery n all. He can't bat as well as Prior and he can't keep as well as Foster. At the crease he's got all the command of a kitten in a dog pound. Get shot of him.

As for the skipper well I like Vaughan but the way he's been getting a bit chippy recently and implying to everyone that the Notts Aussie had nowt to do with him is a bit shoddy. He's only there cos if you look down the alternatives you realise that the rest of 'em couldn't organise a filofax.

The only almost blameless ones are Cook and Bell. KP needs to settle down but as he's batting after Vaughan he might be even edgier than usual. In fact he might as well come down the steps with the skipper with a little fold-out stool and just wait a couple of minutes.

Strauss has turned into a weird piece of beach life that clings to the crease like a desperate barnacle and only occasionally pops his tentacles out to waft at some stray particles. Watching him accumulate a score is about as entertaining as watching sloths doing rhythmic gymnastics to a Dido soundtrack. I'd sack him n all but the old boys network'll probably keep him going.

I'm not pretending that the Saffers aren't a good unit although I'm not sure the bowlers are so fantastic. Kallis looks like he saw a restaurant sign and thought it read 'All You Can Eat For a Five-For' before he turned up at Lord's. When he poached Cook at second slip the population of LA must have hunkered down for the after-shock. His trundling swingers ought not to be too bothering. Ntini is a joy to watch but he should be fodder on this track.

Morkel's a different matter entirely but somehow our batters managed to keep him wicketless and give it away to the less good ones. I've already had enough of this raging banshee Nel and his stupid alter ego Gunther. The bloke bowls like a drunk falling into a pub. He's such a nutter he must do a double take every time he see the umpires in their white coats.

Still, I understand where Nel's coming from on the subject of alter egos; in the pavilion I'm Geoffrey Boycott but when I step out on to the playing surface I become Geoffrey from Rainbow (which should still get me in the team ahead of Colly).

The most worrying thing is that this South African team was following on at Lord's not many days ago and since then learnt from it whereas our lads have one bad innings and then go out and repeat the feat! It's hard to avoid the conclusion that they're a bit thick.

Things need to change and quick. They need a replacement captain ready and raring to go cos if Vaughan's knee doesn't get him his terrible form will. I'd tell Cook to brush up on his Mike Brearley books right now. Next time they get into one of them little pre-session huddles perhaps they could bring a prayer mat with them. Plus they need to stop treating blokes like Tremlett the way they have. Rather than call up Pattinson and then Harmison in his place why don't they just send some clowns round to his house to pour custard into his sunhat before jamming it on to his head.

Here's my XI for the fourth Test: Cook, Vaughan, Bell, Pietersen, Shah, Bopara, Flintoff, Foster, Sidebottom/Anderson, Jones, Panesar (with severe reservations about the captain opening but then you might as well get him over and done with straight away).
Of course, there's a chance that by the time you read this Siders, Jimmy and Fred will have swung England right back into contention. There's also a chance that Middlesbrough will have made a decent bleeding signing. And that Peter Andre will be announced as the new Poet Laureate.

Niall (I will drop the Robbo pretense as it is your final blog).

If this is true can you shed some light on the reasons behind bbc discontinuing the blog?

My initial post got moderated which I suspect was due to an unflattering summation of one chief sports editor so at the risk of further moderation I will say I can only assume that the bbc has taken issue with the nature of the comments page as opposed to the blog - otherwise they would surely be taking applications for a new chief sports editor.

Well Niall I didnt quite buy the rationing outlined on the bbc editor blog so can only assume the bbc wish to remove all sources of commentery that dont require an hours worth of premoderation.

As others have echoed, the blog is probably better off outside of the bbc and its tight grip. Hopefully you will find the increased freedoms from the bbc an opportunity to expand the horizons of the blog.

As I said previously, curiosity will probably dictate that I drop in and have a look at some future editions to see what qualities a non-bbc Robbo blog displays. Robbo, good blog as always. Change of direction editorally? I really dont get it. They have plenty of serious, run of the mill blogs that could be articles in any daily newspaper. So why axe the blogs that appeal to the masses (207,000 views is some going)?

Ive always likened reading your blog and the comments from fellow posters, as to sitting in a pub chatting with yer mates. Yes, some of it is silly, some of it gets a bit heated, and some of it is very inciteful. Well thats what you get in chats down the pub. Thats why blokes go down the pub. If you only had the beer and no banter, people wouldnt bother going in.

Well the fool who decided you should go will hopefully get moved on themself sooner rather than later. As for you, well exciting times are ahead. Hope you can build on what you have done here and make yer new home even better.

I for one will keep reading.....and posting the odd comment when i can...i mean its clucking 12.20 and i will have to be up at 6.....darn im a stupid kent at times.

With regard to Mourinho, thankfully he's going to Spain, couldn't bear to have him back in Prem League.

Just goes to show the class of the man, Inter Milan have just won the trophy and all he is interested in talking about is himself, and the Real Madrid managers job, which last I heard was taken.

To speak publicy about another persons job is bad taste.

Besides, I think at Madrid his brand of football might get found out. I can't see the locals taking kindly to that dire defensive style, albeit a winning style.

On the tops montain proud and proud,
Us swearwords to be revolted to us to live or die,
And we swore to die so that Algeria lives

    Refrain:
    Testify! Testify! Testify!

We are soldiers for justice, revolted,
And for our independence we started the combat,
We did not obey null injunction by raising us.
The noise of the powder was our measurement
And crackling of the machine-gun our favorite song.
And we swore to die so that Algeria lives

The verdict, our Revolution will return it
And we swore to die so that Algeria lives

    Refrain:
    Testify! Testify! Testify!

On our heroes we will build a glory
And on our bodies we will go up to immortality,
On our hearts, we will build an army
And of our hope we will raise the standard.
Face of the Release, we lent oath to you
And we swore to die so that Algeria lives

    Refrain:
    Testify! Testify! Testify!

The cry of the fatherland assembles battle fields.

Yes they are strict with internet access, but it's not one of them spots you need to give like two weeks notice before you can take leave, you can literally just take it when you want.

Does the above compensate for one another, well no not quite I suppose, but I'm not complaining!

Yeah you'll be ultimately dissapointed with they way you fell away at the end of the season eh mate! After the Wigan game your team just seemed to be in holiday mode, wich is inexcusable to the supporters.

I was left dissapointed, but atleast we dragged it out, I can't help feel Valencia's miss at Rovers probably cost us it, not that I'm blaming Valencia at all - seriously! He has been one of our best players this year (in my opinion only behind Rooney and Evra).
