The Blue Meanies

It's not a good tale to tell the children, is it? As Terry and Lamps held the Cup aloft, I couldn't help thinking 'the baddies have won. Again.'

There'll be no Hollywood epic of the 2010 Cup Final, which is a shame, as there was enough in it for a damn fine script to emerge. Chelsea hit more bits of woodwork than an erratic carpenter in the first half. Saloman Hassungotta Kalou was back to his worst.

I sometimes think that a footballer's haircut is a good barometer of how well they think they're doing - and Kalou's 'I was run over by motorbike' look suggests self-confidence.

Mind you, nothing quite compares with the original Ronaldo's 2002 slid-forward toupee - a work staggering both in terms of its audacity and it's its utter naffness. Then again, the lad scored a hatful that tournament so maybe the bumfluff forehead helped.
Kevin Prince BoatengPrince of grieves - Boateng is inconsolable after his penalty miss
Any road, following Kalou's three-yard miss, I fully expect a low-key sensible barnet for next season. As for Kevin Prince-Boateng... keep the shirt over your head for the summer, mate. You might comfort yourself by watching Frank's woeful scuff up the other end (good lad Lamps, get it out of the way now son, eh?) or dipping back into the annals of time to find this Pat Nevin special.

But really, it looked set-up to be one of them stories that neutrals get a bit giddy over - like Sunderland beating the evil, talented and cynical empire of Leeds United in '73. Or Saints in '76. Or Wimbledon in '88.

But no. Avram's lads, united in their misfortune, with Jamie O'Hara carrying his fractured shins around the park, and Aaron Mokoena throwing himself in the line of fire in a way that Kevin Costner could only dream of with Whitney Houston, looked like it might just be their day.

Then Wince-Boateng's bottling of the pen was followed by the inevitable Didier Drogba goal and that was that. The Blue Meanies triumph.

A word on Drogba. A man of many parts.

There's the agonised writher, apart from 50 Cent I can't think of anyone who's has so many 'near-death' experiences.

There's the jostling, nudging, tugging, needling stuff - but then I forgive any centre-forward that when he gets twice as much coming the other way.

There's the sulk. I swear he's the reason Nicolas Anelka's grown up over the past couple of years. He must have looked at Didi-dums and thought 'I'm not like THAT, am I?'
There's Red Mist Drogba 'n all. Too often the bloke gets his marching orders when it counts.

And then there's the footballer. The Drogba who stands up, doesn't cry, gallops like a centaur (I had to look that one up), shoots like Robin Hood (but with a better Northern accent than your man Crowe), and all in all leads the line like some terrifying matador.

In other words, the bloke's really talented, really annoying and the best all-round centre-forward in world footie at the moment, including Torres.

Chelsea must be commended on their first Double. But I can't quite bring myself to do it,
which is not the case for England's T20 boys, after their majestic drubbing of Australia in the final.

The short-form still seems a bit unsubtle to this old fella's eyes but you can't deny it's entertaining. Credit must go to Michael Clarke for persisting with the blond mullet that is Shane Watson and giving Craig Kieswetter and KP a pie-fest for three overs.

There's nowt like being world champs to make you put aside a few question-marks, but the two men who brought the game home for us were born in Jo'burg and Pietermaritzburg. Is this a problem? It might be for Norman Tebbit, I suppose. And South Africa.

But Craig's Mum's Scottish and Kev's Mum's English and in any case Eoin Morgan was at least as important to England's batting line-up... and he's - ahem - Irish.

Look, the point is, he says, arguing with himself, that England don't write the rules on qualification - and so it's not our fault they want to play for this noble nation of ours. In fact, the least we can do to show our gratitude to the batsman-factory that is the RSA is to go and win the World Cup for them, then they can win it here in 2018 when we host it. Which should happen so long as eminent people in the bid don't get caught having private conversations with their friends.
Craig Kieswetter and Kevin PietersenKieswetter and KP - English and proud

I can't say too much about Lord Triesman, but we all say things in private that we wouldn't say in public - and if we're getting to the point where every under-the-breath aside is being recorded and then used against us then we might as well turn into a bunch of mute robots with politically-correct placards held above our heads.

It's another shoddy affair, any road. But it shouldn't affect the bid. Fact is, England has the best facilities on offer, the best grounds, an unending supply of interested fans, and we should host it. The main stumbling block is not some alleged text messages to a young tell-tale, but the playing surface of our national stadium.

They'd be better off playing the divisional play-offs in the flipping car-park. Back in the 70s, Scotland fans were pilloried for digging up squares of Wembley's precious turf. I tell you what, dear Pictish friends, pick up your spades, your pitch-forks and your barrows and come and flaming well take the silly sods (of turf) away!

Then we can pool together the greatest minds in lawn preparation and solve this problem. Look for a Cameron-inspired coalition of Titchmarsh, Don and Dimmock to be in place before too long.

Of course, by then, we could have a Miliband in power. I'm all for the brothers having a shoot-out, me. Take note you cowardly Klitschkos. Vit v Vlad? As long as we don't get the boxing equivalent of a Williams sisters final, that'd be grand entertainment.

I am glad that Chelsea won, despite being a Liverpool fan. The "victim" complex routine from Portsmouth grew old a long time ago and it's not even justified! I feel sorry for the fans but the club knew what it was doing when it gambled like it did and they only have themselves to blame. I think I must have been pretty much the only non Chelsea fan that didn't want Portsmouth to win but I can't really understand the logic of wanting a completely mismanaged club to obtain success.

    b) - why the newspapers thought we'd be happy for them to announce this to the wider world, when it could very easily have a negative impact on the bid, when the world cup coming here would generate a lot of money for the country.

As for LT, won't it be hilarious if Spain get dodgy penalty after dodgy penalty at the World Cup. Everyone will be thinking it but no one will want to say it.

I just think it's staggering that someone of his stature in football really believed such a conspiracy story. It's like something from a bad Bond novel, with the Russians the nefarious mastermind behind a dastardly plot...

Maybe there is a lot of underhandness that goes on in footy that we don't, or will never, know about. Paranoid, I know. But just because you're paranoid doesn't mean they're not out to get you...

If I was looking at Drogba's missus in a nightclub and he took umbrage with this, I would feel safe from harm as the merest of touches leave him rolling around on the floor in agony. He looks like he's auditioning for a part in the opening 20 mins of Saving Private Ryan.

Sadly, two or three of their current players make it impossible for me to derive any joy for their achievements. This has got to stop. Anyone who does not think this deceptive behaviour is devilish needs to think again. The list is endless Bill Clinton, David Beckham, Tiger Woods, John Terry, Ashley Cole...have all been lured into beds of strange women.

Why did these women no say "No, this is wrong " at the very start? Instead, they go in with their cameras, tape recorders, notebooks and gather evidence!

This is nothing short of a stab in the back. Question is, are we all agreed that this is socially acceptable behaviour?

As human beings, we are often happy when bad things happen to the people we don't like. We must be careful though, things have a way of finding their way round and soon enough it happens to someone you love and the person is destroyed forever. We must therefore know to condemn evil, even if it has happened to the very unlikable John Terry. From the time of biblical Samson till now men have never been able to resist the temptations offered by women, it's just not gonna happen. It's wired into men's DNA that they must be sorely tempted by women.

This so called secretary Melissa Jacobs, pretending to be a friend to Lord Triesman, attending a private date with a tape recorded, is evil of the worst kind. With friends like her, you don't enemies...

That comment about Chelsea beggars belief. They are THE club that has spent money they simply do not have. They are THE club that drove the transfer market back up to the level of madness just as the bubble was beginning to burst. They represent everying wrong with the game in this country and if the wonderful Terry and Cole were to represent any club, they are certainly at the one with the same level of morals as them.

    Re: The Blue Meanies

I feel I had to comment re your blog. I watched the FA Cup final on saturday along with millions of others. As a Chelsea supporter I was probably in the minority in wanting them to win as most neutrals would like to see David slay Goliath. That's fair enough. When watching as a neutral I tend to favour the underdog as the underdog winning against the odds is what sport is all about. However, you can't always have your cake and eat it - if Chelsea had fielded a weakened team in the earlier rounds of the competition (as done by a number of other premiership clubs) you would have been decrying the demise of the FA Cup if the final had been contested by lesser teams. Chelsea see all competitions as important and try to win them all - this is also what sport is about. They should have been applauded for their efforts, not made to look like 'bullies'. I feel very sorry for the plight of Portsmouth and hope they can regroup and rise again - their fans certainly deserve premier league status as they showed they were true supporters of their team and of football. Chelsea have worked hard this season to play football to entertain and win matches and win more fans - the credit they deserve should be acknowledged.

If England had lost the bid over this, and who's to say that might still not happen, the particular paper involved might have generated a few more sales over the story but at what overall cost to the country - yes disgraceful indeed, and ok we know integrity in the tabloids went a long time ago, but what about common sense?!
Then I have to defend JT on those pitch remarks, and not just as a fan. This needs to be said, loudly and clearly so that the situation (i.e. that we cannot have an events centre and a world class playing surface simultaneously) can be sorted out now, before the reputation of this beautiful world class stadium starts to go the way of the old Millenium Dome - spectacular but fundamentally flawed. This absolutely needs to be taken by the back of the neck and sorted, now.

I think HMRC are just taking their frustration at Southend paying their tax bill, Cardiff getting a delay and Pompey getting a CVA on other clubs. They've been waving winding up orders at everyone like an accountancy version of Neville Chamberlain ("tax in our pockets"). I reckon it'll be settled easily enough although Rangers could be in trouble if the rumours of their £50M tax debt are to be believed.

However the fans, were the best I seen in a long time, they sung all game and after, proving they are some of the best fans in England.
Do you think most of the fans cared they lost ? Most didnt expect to win. They came to support their team and got a blinding performance in my opinion.

You cannot call Chelsea 'baddies' because they won a cup final they were in. Do you think Chelsea would want to lose, to give the Cup to Pompey ?? Ofcourse not.

Though I support Chelsea, I felt sorry for Pompey and would have supported them if they were contesting the Final against any other team. Portsmouth is a team, that I have taken to my heart ever since their Championship days under 'Arry.

However I was a bit upet with some of the bad tackles by Brown and Boateng, the latter's whose rash challenge has not put Ballack out of the World Cup. That is in excusable. The list of top players not going to the World Cup now: Ballack, Beckham, Pato, Ronaldinho, Alex, Benzema, Cambiasso, Zanetti, Adriano, Nasri, Frey, Totti, Cassano...can make a top eleven!!

Robbo, I don't know whether to classify your blog as evidence of your anti-Blue's sentiments. Thankfully, from next season you won't have this platform to share your smog-induced reasoning with the football loving public anymore. Man Utd won an FA Cup against Milwall some seasons ago, so the giant versus dwarf scenario has been played before. I am thankful that the game turned out different from the white-wash the media predicted, though Chelsea should have been at least 5 up by half time. Congrats to Pompey and I hope they are able to sort out their financial mess and get promoted soon. Its obvious that some of their players were playing to attract transfers and a few like James, Dindane and Boateng did their chances no harm.

The anti-Chelsea comments coming from other fans in view of our Double success will not phase any true Blues fan. Compared to 2005 and 2006, under the Mourinho years, I would say the hate campaign is less. Man City no doubt, has taken some of the venom that used to come our way, especially from the so-called "anti-money in football purists". With Ronaldinho linked to Man City, this is going to be a fun summer.

And how is it that they're basically self-sufficient now after cutting back in the last couple of years?

Christ there is some ignorance in this country regarding football.

I'd like to apologise for saying that clubs spending far more than they can afford to, not paying staff or players, or the tax man is a form of cheating. It's clearly something that shouldn't be punished severely because it's not a bad precedent to start at at all.

Maybe it's just jealosy, because I'm sure they wouuldn't think it was the end of the world if some multi gazzilionaire came and sponsered their team. Most people are probably in denial more than jealous. Abramovich may have brought a level of wealth that was previously unseen but it is simply an upsacling of what has been seen before.

Rich individual takes control of and invests money in football club is by no means unprecedented and for people to think otherwise is surely borderline, if not actual, ignorance.

Also, looking to the future, what if Chelsea turn a profit in the next year or two. Then, Chelsea will be a self sufficient, top club, Abramovich will own all the shares and with the attraction for premiership clubs being what it is, he could even turn a profit on his whole investment.

See in those regular business terms and all the losses will just become capital investment that will bare fruit and win lots of trophies (value adding trophies I might add) along the way.

I've said this before and it seemed to strike a chord with a few people.

I reckon the media as a whole would be alot more friendly and conducive to Chelsea if Abramovich spoke to them. The fact that he has not said one word to them in nearly seven years, despite quite alot of provoking, really, really annoys them. They love calling the tune, setting the agenda whatever, and the fact that he rises above it all the time takes a bit of power away from them and they don't like it.

They want to be consulted. How dare an unknown come along and almost change the face of the English game without their say so. A game they think they own by virtue of the way they chose to report it. And he rides roughshod over them and doesn't seem to give a damn! How dare he!

They take the attitude that if he won't charm them, then why should they be charming to him. Compare this to the brown nosing that goes on elsewhere.....

and lastly, due to the economic and social decline in britain today I say bring back Drink Driving and Smoking in Pubs and Restraunts and all enclosed spaces. The resulting revenue created would be more than enough to make a real firm offer for Man U, Chelsea and City combined, fund Pensions, take over Banks and Building Societies, Mps wages and expenses plus pay for a third world war in the gulf to take back the oil we once owned.

HAHAHA yes when you don't win anything resort to the old history.

Oh my goodness you are hillarious with that girls cricket team jibe. Yes, a girls cricket team that had the best record against Manchester United out of any team in the league. 3-0 at Old Trafford in 2001, 5-0 in 1999 at the Bridge, we did the double over you in 1994 hahahaha xD

Oh yes not to mention the girls cricket teams league placings:
    1997 6th (FA Cup)
1998 4th (League Cup and Cup Winners Cup)
    1999 3rd (Qualified for CL)
    2000 5th (CL Quarters)
    2001 6th
    2002 6th
    2003 4th (Qualified for CL)

Hahaha with your talk mate you are clearly a glory hunter. Beforehand we didn't win the league, unlike you guys of course who are worth supporting because you won trophies lol. I supported Chelsea before they won league titles, I think the only reason you support ManU is because of their league titles.

Let me reiterate again. CHELSEA, supposedly a terrible team before Abramovich took over, had the best record of any team against your beloved ManYoo. Put that in your pipe and smoke it!

    DOUBLE CHAMPIONS!

Granted Kalou's hair style does make you think his mind/priorities are in the wrong place - especially in front of goal.

Penalties - yes, Boateng didn't appear to want to take it. Lampard hits the ball in the same place about 90% of the time. James knew it, Lampard knew that James knew it - why not go to the other side, we all ask.

While the Evil Empire of the 2000s won, it was the right outcome. When has the game become so sentimental that we want a team who really didn't have the horses to win it.

Lastly, as a longtime Chelsea fan and my hay day of the 80s - you have to show the one deflating moment of Pat's career at Chelsea - damn you :-) He's my favorite player of all time and a heck of a football writer, who doesn't rely on cheesy one liners!

I can't think of any reason for your criticism of "The Daily Mail", which has a long tradition of journalistic integrity. This fine newspaper has seldom moved too far from the Lord Rothermere era, the inter war years. Its support for Adolf Hitler was unqualified at that time, although it became a bit more muted after September 1939. "Hurrah for the Blackshirts" was one of its more understated editorials in praise of that fine British statesman, Sir Oswald Mosely, in 1934.

I cannot recollect which of Robbo's bloggers has championed the Mail in the manner you suggest, but I do feel that I can say with conviction that it would not have been GazUtd. He is much too much a blinkered bigot to see the merits of this epitome of British publishing integrity.

He used to chant "Got your Guns an Knives Boyz " followed by "More Champagne at the back!". I think big fish in small pond applies to your most picturesque city.

Mmmmm, I think this is the point that will cost England the hosting. Cast your minds back to 18 months or so ago when there were severe doubts that South Africa would be ready in time to host this summer. Step forward the FA with, 'We're ready to host at a moments notice!' Good stuff, looks good for any future bid. Now look at what is proposed for 2018, half the grounds aren't even built yet and most of the others need some serious redevelopment (according to the list Wembley, Old Trafford, Eastlands and the Emirates are the only ones ready).
Were the FA telling FIFA porkies?

also, blogspot isnt as universally accessible through work networks as the bbc is but "my workplace wont let me use it instead of getting on with some work" isnt a strong counter argument...

aside from that i think blogspot is actually better; it will free us from some of the inescapeable modtastic censoriousness of PSB (not THAT psb)

but as a user experience, i like blogspot and gaz, rba, adam, bo offer a robbo+ experience.

that's not to say this is ok by me. it's not. it suggests the bbc WHICH WE PAY FOR doesnt give a toss about what we find entertaining/ educational/ informative.

it suggests the bbc is choosing to prioritse spending on eg 2 slightly poncy digital tv channels which noone watches, lots of round-faced oxbridge types in offices etc etc

and cancelling a popular and populist footie blog before the world cup suggests that the bbc feels nothing but contempt for me and my pie-munching virtual pseudo-pals

in the political context its pretty idiotic decision-making - the beeb is haunted at the mo by the spectre of privatisation/ loss of the license fee and this has just been made a tad more likely by losing the support of its wider audience - us

Nice block capitals. Very erm SHOUTY. Point is Pompey players didn;t get paid, saw their points total halved and soldiered on to a Cup Final. Avram, tossed away like day-old lettuce by Chelsea after the team had come within a skipper-slip of glory, had led Portsmouth to a final against his former employers. There was a lot for the neutral to root for, and Chelsea ruined it by being slightly better, even though they'd already won the League and were the Cup holders. In other words, no romantic ending!
Chelsea played great stuff this season... that's not in question... but I like the odd underdog turning over the big boys so I pretty much felt gutted when it didn't happen. Again. Even for a Chelsea fan with a shouty style that can't be that hard to understand.

Inspired by the save Robbo petition I thought I'd post one here for a slightly different reason. Sack Phil McNulty. For those of you who'd prefer to read why here instead of in the actual petition I state the following:

    Dear Readers,

I bring this petition to you after reading through the proverbial straw that broke the camel's back. The full article, in its not-so-glorious levels of idiocy, arrogance and self-justification can be found at http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/philmcnulty/2010/05/premier_league_season_review_1.html

This is not the first criminally poor blog from Phil McNulty, nor do I expect it to be the last. However I do feel that the time is right, given the end of the season and the upcoming spectacle of the World Cup, to ask that something be done to rid the BBC of this woefully under-performing blogger.

Why does this blog deserve a petition to have it removed I hear you ask? As with all worthwhile the questions the answer is not simple. There is, perhaps most prominently, the arrogance of the man. Even his blog description reeks of it (and who can actually look at that picture without wanting to punch the man in the face). I imagine that the closest Phil McNulty has ever come to the word humble is when his finger passed over it in the dictionary while he was searching for hubris.

The self-justification, how often do we have to read that he was proven right when he wrote Arsenal off far too early? Just because he was proven right, doesn't mean he was justified. If he'd written Utd off he'd have been "proven right" in exactly the same way.

The idiocy? How on earth could anyone sum up Wolves season with a C. Everyone thought they'd go back down. Everyone thought McCarthy couldn't keep them up. McNulty himself predicted a Birmingham Wolves relegation battle. And somehow only gave Birmingham a B+ for their outstanding season, what would have gotten them an A? Champions League qualification?

And what about the woeful moderation of the blog? A man so insecure any post containing the word "mc numpty" is automatically banned. The moderation is way above and beyond what any other blog has. And somehow we're expected to believe that this is nothing to do with him? Yeah, right. If it really is nothing to do with you, and given the numerous complaints regarding its debate-stifling qualities, why not do something about it?

At this stage I think it's fair to say that Phil McNulty's blog writing career has been a failure. I'm not going to claim that his entire career as a journalist is roughly equivalent dismal fare as I don't think that'd be fair considering I try to avoid reading anything else. But for the main football blog on the BBC this is too much. Mihir Bose was, admittedly worse, but McNulty is not far short. How is there not a Tim Vickery, a man who manages to offer genuinely interesting and insightful blogs, available to write on Premier League football. It is, after all, the biggest, best, most interesting and hotly debated sport in the world. Is this really the best we can do? I believe not.

You can never go too far in Chelsea bashing. That bunch of cheating weasels can be insulted enmasse forever (or until they get rid of JT, Cashley, Mikel & Drogba - 4 of the most self absorbed unlikeable individuals in football - and that's hard)

Gaz Lord Dave supports Aston Villa and his constituents support either Swindon or Oxford so will not care about insulting CHelsea (and considering Chelsea nicked Glenn Hoddle and John Gorman as manager and coach he will likely encourage it)
