Pompey and circumstance

Robbo Robson | 11:31 UK time, Monday, 12 April 2010

Ahhh... the FA Cup. There were them that were muttering darkly about the horror of blinking Chelsea in the Blue Bell on Saturday night.

Ancelotti's men were assisted somewhat by the official we call Lettuce - as in Webb's Wonder - as in I wonder what Howard Webb was thinking.

John Terry's Grim Reaper of a scythe at James Milner was a bit Halloween 'n' all, (Gerrard's elbow, JT's lunge... does a captain's armband mean you're above the law?) but in the end Chelski deserved it, even if O'Neill was probably doing his best Yosemite Sam impression for hours after.

Villa keep coming up short, despite the form of young James. At times, when they're defending in depth and counter-attacking with Walcottian pace, they look great. But they are still right limited, and up against the very best they still look like a short-armed kid swinging his fists while a grown-up holds him off by the forehead.

They need a goalscorer. Preferably one that can turn average into title-challenging. Rooney gets better and better, doesn't he? He's the only bloke at United at the mo who seems to know not to pull on a door that says Push. And, as with Torres at Liverpool, when he's not there, the team has all the cutting edge of a bouncy castle.
Portsmouth fan John Anthony Portsmouth Football Club Westwood Portsmouth fan John Anthony Portsmouth Football Club Westwood
Still, I'd have said the same about Portsmouth. Picquionne? Not so much a footballer as a spicy relish. Utaka? Yep, it sounds like 'attacker' but looks like a runaway tricycle.

Dindane? He'd need four attempts to finish a fancy canapé, let alone a decent chance. With relegation assured, the semi-final must have come as a light relief, I suppose. And by heck, I almost wept for them fans when Wiley blew his final, fateful whistle.

It's been a dire season for Pompey and that wild-eyed top-hat-wearing, walking billboard of a Portsmouth fan has kept bawling out his support along with the rest of them, despite the club having been ripped open and passed around like a bag of crisps on a pub table.

The blokes who wore their colours on Sunday were noble indeed, mind. The last team to get relegated and reach the Cup final were a fine and noble tribe too: the Boro. Of course this was 1997 - the year of the two-point deduction, so we've got a hell of a lot in common with Pompey 2010. Not least that we got stuffed by Chelsea in the final...

But let's praise Pompey for getting themselves in the position to be on the end of such a kicking. First of all, they were up against that folk hero-turned 'Judas', old 'Arry. Not only did Redknapp waddle off from the south coast, but a lot of little Pompey ducklings scuttled off after him: Defoe, Crouch, Kranjcar...

Of course, there are some ex-Spurs at Pompey: Michael Brown, the ludicrously forenamed Kevin-Prince Boateng (what's his sister called? Tracy-Princess Boateng?) And the man of the match, Ricardo Rocha. That's right, they were all a bit pants at White Hart Lane.

By the way, in Portuguese, Rocha means 'rock' or 'boulder'. Never could one man have so lived up to his name. (Although one day I hope to make Timmy Mallett live up to his by using him to bash in some tent-pegs).

Boateng was a live-wire all afternoon. And Michael Brown? Well I'd give him a yellow card just for putting his boots on, that lad. He is to midfield creativity what Liam Gallagher is to oratory.

Of course, David James survived courtesy of one of them refereeing decisions. Officials in this country seem to treat goalkeepers like doe-eyed, ice-bound seal-pups who are within an inch of getting clattered by some club-wielding marauder of a striker.

James knew there was nowt in Kranjcar's challenge, but increasingly the big stopper is becoming one of them rare breeds - a smart and honest English footballer.
Avram Grant and Harry RedknappAvram won the battle of the bosses
So Redknapp was vanquished and Avram Grant now has the chance to bite back at Chelsea and win the FA Cup Final. As I say, it's not going to happen, but the Cup is and always will be about the impossible dream, so let's not pour intimate waters on the Pompey chips just yet.

They'll be back at Wembley in a month's time. During which period they can invest in some crampons so they can stay upright on the Wembley surface.

Redknapp's right - the pitch is a disgrace. If we carry on like this with our playing surfaces, I fear for London 2012: we'll have Usain Bolt sprinting along on something resembling a water bed; Team GB's rowing eight will spend half the race wiping pondweed off their paddles; questions will be raised about the use of cobblestones in the velodrome; Beth Tweddle will be vaulting off a real horse and Tom Daley will be doing a full pike with triple flick-flack into a washing-up bowl.

It's just embarrassing. I can only imagine that come 15 May, Wembley will be covered in green nylon carpet tiles.

In the meantime, poor old Tiger is still getting it in the neck for not being happy at hitting rubbish shots. If you think he's bad, you should try playing golf with me.

My local course is scarred with evidence of my progress through it. There's a tree on the fourth fairway that's got my three-iron still lodged in it. In my rage I've actually chipped a frog out of the water and on to the 10th green.

And if you dig deep enough into a greenside bunker on the 17th, you'll find a rusty piece of junk that used to be my sand-wedge.

Well done, Phil Mickelson. Augusta got the decent family man it wanted as its winner. And Westwood need not berate himself. Mickelson could carve a half-decent ice-sculpture from a fairway iron. Top man.

Utter rubbish - they played as best they could with teh players they have. Just because they tackled Modric and didn't let Spurs walk all over them doesn't mean they are anti-football it means that they are tactically astute (oh and who scored again)

Inept Wiley ruined the game with his two ridiculous decisions in disallowing the equaliser and giving Portsmouth a penalty

Equaliser I can understand but penalty was cast-iron and Palacios was lucky not to get a red card

The final will be very one-sided

Not necessarily as Pompey will want to win it more than anything to make up for being relegated. Liverpool thought 1988 would be a walkover and look what happened to them

Still it's raised our admittedly low chances of champions league football, we've got more than enough big games coming up.

I'm almost hoping 'Arry does a McCarthy and rests all our first choice players for the trip to old trafford. We're never going to get points there anyway and I'd much rather beat Chelsea than United. In fact, I'm hoping for some kind of run-in love-in between Spurs and United where we beat Arsenal, Chelsea and City, they beat City, and we get fourth from City and they take the title from Chelsea.

Because it wasn't - the tackle is from behind and the player is fouled before contact is made with the ball hence why it was a penalty. For it to be a fair challenge the ball must be played without fouling the player or the challenge must be made by a Man Utd player(as they are always fair challenges)

You are ambitious beyond your dreams and you always find someone or something other than yourselves to blame. Your chants are similar: more of your songs denigrate your rivals (with some rather uncreative filthy language) rather than extol your qualities (which are few). Purchase yourself a goalkeeper who doesn't flap at the air, a defender whose knee does not turn to a Mersey beach-ball after each game, and a striker who doesn't laugh each time he misses a sitter, and then, maybe then, you'll clinch a CL spot. Until then, keep moaning and groaning because it is actually amusing to clubs who take responsibility for their own shortcomings.

And Pompey fans--shine on indeed. I do not support Portsmouth, but your resilience yesterday was admirable. Spurs should have killed the game in the first half but they failed to do, so all credit to you. As for Spurs, you make most people who do not support Spurs feel ill. Maybe you should try what you did a couple of years ago, i.e., produce five kits, one of which, if I recall correctly, was coloured manure; mentioning that to a hapless bloke at the local, he rejoined that it was 'chocolate'. Nice catch. Surely, Portsmouth will not overcome Chelsea; but I think that trouncing of Wigan has gone to Spurious heads. Let Pompey have their day; it's been a rough season indeed for them, and whilst that is due to their own mismanagement, it's not quite sensible to blame the referee on each occasion that something does not go your way. Your Crouch had a number of chances to put the ball away. He did not. Pompey did. End of story. Was the refereeing poor? Possibly. But there is no rule saying Pompey can't park the bus: this is not basketball where the Americans have rules about 'illegal defense'. This is football. You lost. Now get over it and good luck in the Mickey Mouse Europa League next year.

The tackle was ok (albeit from behind) - but Palacios was pulling Dindane's shoulder back. Without the pull, he wouldn't have got the challenge in.

It's soft, I guess, and I think most people would admit to that. But I kinda think that if it had been at the halfway line, it would have been a free kick, so in the box it has to be a penalty. The only real question is why yellow wasn't red.

One thing you touched on which was worthy of some crticism was the Wembley pitch which must surely be explained. The pitch has been terrible for ages now - how is it so bad? That failing, he'll end up at Citeh, as will everyone else in the EPL, and Citeh will have a squad of 400 players and they will just play themselves.

    Thanks, Monk.

Glad to see that at least one person who follows football is similarly irritated with the Spurious history of nonsense. Being from North London, it was once the case that half my friends were Arsenal supporters and the other half were Spurs supporters. I don't care what team my mates support, but the Spurious ones became so, so tiresome, I just had to cut them off. This supposed 'debate' on Robbo's blog only reaffirms my decision to avoid anyone and anything related to Spurs. There is an astonishing invention called the mirror: If you support Spurs, perhaps you ought to purchase one, and have a good long look in it. Seeing some of the Spurs fans at the pub yesterday, I was embarrassed even to have a North London accent and left after the first Portsmouth goal.

That was when Spurs fans, in a moment of delirious and drunken and (from a neutral's perspective) hilarious self-delusion, broke out in anti-Arsenal songs. Rich. You can't beat Pompey so sing your expletive-laden songs. Bravo.

Shine on, Pompey. I wish you luck.

Above all, shine on, Gunners, shine on. If we don't win the league this year, I will own that we lost games which we should have won--i.e., it was our responsibility--and we have suffered so many injuries in positions for which we should have had adequate cover--i.e., the injuries are not our responsibility but the lack of cover was.

And I stand by my previous conviction: the very day Ramsey broke his leg, we ought to have recalled Wilshere. That might have minimised some of the toil that resulted in Fabregas' responsibility.

Which is to say: Arsenal's shortcomings are Arsenal's shortcomings. But for Manure and for Spurs, your shortcomings are of course other people's shortcomings.

Incidentally, whatever you think of David James, his comments about the FA Cup win in 2008 leading to demise were honest and spot on. And whilst footballers (most concur) are egregiously overpaid, his donation of his salary to preserve (was it 9?) staff jobs was a class gesture.

Remember last season when 'Arry said, of Bent's (admittedly terrible) miss, that his missus could have scored? I wonder what 'Arry, or the other Lilly Whites, have to say for Crouch et al. One season you will be relegated and we'll all show up at H2H's pub and have a massive celebration.

Midfield then, Nani (still hot and cold but so is Ronaldo even now), Valencia (especially good, I think he'll be world class in a year or 2), Gibson, Anderson(still have faith in him, next year will be his last to prove his worth), Eikrem and Obertan. Then upfront Macheda(I think he looked very good against Blackburn, for an 18 year old especially) and Hernandez (looks very good on You tube).

So nah, I think we're looking pretty sweet!

Monk, that hadn't occurred to me, but I think you could be spot on. Spurs are deluded that they will top Citeh's points, and score 7 goals again to atone for the disparity in GD, and finish fourth.

Incidentally, I think M. Dawson has more own goals than goals scored. Can any of you stats folks confirm this?

I think Arsenal will destroy Spurs and Spurs will finish 6th. If Spurs lose, they will blame the referee, the pitch, Darren Bent, or something or someone else. If we Gunners lose, we will blame ourselves. C'est comme ça, non?

Wel I guess not! Dude, we do not have the money most of you guys like to spend. Or at least we're trying to spend as little as we can..

Good times will come and as far as all is concerned. Wenger is the man to bring the good times (Oh yea, it's frastrating at times but what can you do if Barca wants Fabregas for 80million quid?)

The good thing is, if you look at the "selling" Wenger has made, you'd realise all is good in the books. e.g. Half of Man City is ex-Goons (and they want Flamini), Barca has had many ex-Goons in there as well, and there's a few lads also doing loan rounds in the lower leagues. So all is gon be well mate!!! When?!?! That's a tough one

Sorry, mate. I didn't mean to be niggling-minded. Apologies, sincerely; I do mean that. Petrol is out of control and the lack of adequate public transit is mind-boggling, isn't it? Perhaps I confused you with Rod and was too barbed in my post. No offense intended. Peace?
I thought you were a Spurs fan who lives in Brooklyn. I actually have a soft spot for Kent. Here in London the I tend to walk everywhere or take the bus or bicycle or a mixture thereof; I've driven a car once in my life and it was in Milan. A rental called "Panda" and it was royal blue. Embarrassing. To top it off, took me 3 hours to get out of that blasted ring-ring-ring-ring road.

H2H, where are you? And how goes the pub? I'm in Amsterdam this July and I must pay a visit!

Wrong, going through the man to get to the ball = foul. If the tackler happens to be behind level with the attacker it doesn't automatically make it a foul since through the amazing evolutionary triumph that is articulated joints, it is actually possible for the thrust of the tackle to not come directly along the line between the two centres of mass.

#76 Fratton - I saw what you're saying about the pressure coming from behind but I disagree that it should have been given as a foul in the middle of the pitch. I mean, writing it now I'm losing my conviction as it's now almost a full 24 hrs since I saw it, but definitely at the time I didn't think there was anything more than a regular 50/50 tussle. I did also think that if the ref was so sure it was a penalty then it had to be a red card, and I think that the fact he didn't give it is evidence it was a bit of a bottled decision. Definitely a clear goal scoring opportunity so if the ref feels the challenge was unfair then there's no further judgement to make, Palacios has to go.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------

I meant "behind level" to distinguish between being directly behind the player (which is loosely synonymous with being in a position such that any challenge is a foul) and merely being behind 90 degrees of the attacker's direction of motion.

Regarding playing man and ball I thought it was much cleaner than Fletcher's tackle on fabregas that got him red carded for last year's CL final, which most people were happy to concede was very harsh.

Regarding pulling the guy back, I saw the replay at the time and I didn't think it was anything that would give away a foul anywhere on a pitch unless the player was properly brought down, which he was the end, but only by Palacios' right leg which had gone in and won the ball. I'd have to watch it again to be sure though.

Check out the comment on the Wembley pitch -LOLOL...alas we have a problem....

The presence of "illegal substances" on the list of items prohibited at Wembley may go some way towards explaining the conspicuous absence of good grass at the national stadium. Despite having been laid more often than a Mötley Crüe groupie, the sub-standard sward continues to provoke the ire of assorted managers, having been held accountable for injuries sustained by Michael Owen and Wayne Rooney, not to mention the Michael Dawson slip that enabled Portsmouth to score their opener against Tottenham Hotspur yesterday. "How can you play on a pitch you can't stand up on?" Harry Redknapp asked in the wake of his side's defeat in the second of two FA Cup semi-finals that looked more like the early rehearsals for Dancing On Ice.

The good news for Harry is that his players won't have to concern themselves with renegotiating Wembley's surface any time soon. The bad news for people paying through the nose to watch matches and eat £7 chilli dogs at this soulless white elephant is that the dreadful fibre-turf pitch is unlikely to be replaced with a seeded Desso equivalent of the kind grown at the Emirates, among other Premier League grounds. Such turf takes three months to bed in and can't be stored in a nearby warehouse during monster truck rallies or Muse gigs, rendering it unsuitable for a stadium that cost so much it's forced to stage a minimum of two rugby matches, seven football matches, three rock concerts and an American Football game between now and the end of October just to keep the bank manager happy.

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I would have to disagree with you for starters the point of "the best of human interaction". In general the blog is populated by a mixed bag of comments, nothing much more. Some can be funny, some can be a bit cringing.

Secondly - how much importance do you place on the actual blog? Its my opinion that the blog material now plays second fiddle to the comments section. As a result there is a distinct decrease in emphasis on providing good material. Basically nobody much cares if the blog is poor because their main interest lies in the interaction of the comments page as you point out. Inneviteably this leads to a scenario whereby the people that really dont place much value on the content but prefer to log on just to socialise casually dominate the blog and the author knows it really isnt too important what kind of half hearted attempt or cringingly bad jokes he makes because the same collection of people will log on, read the blog once, more or less forget about it and get on with simply making their own comments.

Im guessing the reason this blog started out was to provide a semi humourous take on the weeks sporting action and was designed to encourage people to talk about it, hence the blog format as opposed to just an article. I dont think they envisaged it turning into essentially a social networking page but it has due to the lax moderation policy and speed of commenting. 90% of the comments now wouldnt pass the basic moderation test but essentially nobody really cares (me included).

When you consider the blogs original purpose was to stimulate sporting debate, the responsibility lies with the author to at least try and provide this but more often than not there is much more concern with trying to funny and large sections of the material covering the ficticious world of "Robbo". This is where the blog fails to realise its potential.

The comments dont bother me in the slightest but theres very little effort put in to trying to provide some decent debate which I think is poor.

JDR, I have a lot of respect for you but what, in your opinion, is the point of human interaction? I would submit that, other than sex (and food), and please note that I am fairly young so it looms fairly large in my endeavors, the point is an interaction of the mind - but I can only appreciate the latter physically in a limited sense - ie -we can only interract with so many people and most of them tend to represent the same view point that we have. This blog, amongst others perhaps, is totally free wheeling and enables us to participate and absorb different points of view...

As to your second point, absolutely you are right in that many a times, after the first few reaponces, it whirls off into the wilderness and joy of essentially irrelevant but highly absorbing comments, but, and here is the key distinction, the blog itself provides a fulcrum, a renewal of the basis of debate and since it is lighthearted, it does so without the heavy handed, opinionated and deadening approaches of the general commentary that is prevalent, and that I believe you yourself have many a times deplored.

I certainly cannot comment on what the original purpose of the blog was, but I would put this to you that the blog accomplishes its primary goal, which is to point out and direct the attentions of us all in a gently humorous way (although, I understand you feel it to be less than humourous...LOL) ...

I dont really have much issue with the comments or whatever general direction they take as from a personal point of view I log on and if I see anything that I think is worth debating I will make a point. If none of the comments are of interest to me I simply ignore them.

In a way the comments section is not too unlike a local pub populated by a number of regulars. A given stranger may walk in in the hope of a drink and decide the bar is rubbish, uncomfortable and the regulars are undesireable and leave. Another may walk in and like it and pull up a stool. Either way the same regulars are going to be there and the status quo rarely changes. What I dont like is when the bar isnt serving or when its for regulars only.

I generally read the blog to discuss football or other sporting matters without a lengthy and unneccessarily strict moderation policy - something I feel was the blogs original purpose. When the material falls below being able to provide that I am disappointed as I feel its not unreasonable to look for that on what is basically a sporting blog, albeit a semi serious one.

Do you want everyone to write interesting points every post? We could try but at the end of the day, if something is interesting its only interesting because it someone's opinion thats its interesting. Does that make sense? Therefore I conclude its impossible what you want unless you develop multi-personalities and start your own blog. Sorry man.

Either way the same regulars are going to be there and the status quo rarely changes.

No you misunderstand me. I dont read Robbos blog for the comedy aspect - I dont find the blogs funny and think the humour is fairly repetitive and recycled. However its manageable when the blog itself manages to provide some good football discussion. The decent moderation process allows for some decent debates. Lets be honest would you be on Robbos blog as much if your comments took half an hour to pass moderation? I doubt the blog would get half as many people posting on it.

I have no problem with the comments. I dont expect every comment to be tailor made to interest. I just expect the blog itself to facilitate it and then let me choose to reply if interested. However all too often the blog doesnt do this and is more concerned with trying to be funny and stating the obvious.

Take for example Robbos bit on the golf:

"In the meantime, poor old Tiger is still getting it in the neck for not being happy at hitting rubbish shots.

Top man."

Now how does this accomodate debate? Whats their to discuss really? Robbos fictional backswing? The fact Phil Mickelson won and seems to be a good guy? Theres not much of a point to it. How about mentioning some of the key shots? Whether this was Westwoods best chance of winning a major? Whether Woods looks out of sorts over the days? How about the fact th tournament had so few successful Europeans in it? But no its just stating whats more or less the obvious and then some fictional account of Robbo playing golf. Pretty poor if one was to log on hoping to talk about the Masters.

See the problem here Joe is that you're looking for journalism. Journalism involves taking reports (the facts) and using them to build points and opinions, be it subjective or objective.

Now to me you appear as a masochistic but still somehow intelligent lad so it begs the question: Why are you looking for journalism from a semi Comedy blog written by a fictional character in the BBC's Fun and Games section?

    WHY?

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This is where I disagree. The purpose of having a comments section is for people to comment in. I assume we can agree on that.

Now as it happens I believe the intention of the BBC and the author was for the material that was written to be discussed. I mean its just common sense. It need not be cutting edge or insightful stuff but surely it should be more than just stating what is the obvious or discussing a fictional character. Occasionally Robbo does provide some fuel for debate but equally there are lots of times he does not. The blog appears on the sports pages of BBC and if you look at the tags it appears under football and golf as well as the football blogs section. Yes its supposed to humourous but its also supposed to be sports related and should try to facilitate debate as Im sure was its intended purpose.

So if he's meant to simulate pub talk, why is it a bad thing that:

"In a way the comments section is not too unlike a local pub populated by a number of regulars. We don't need directions or sign posts to have structured debates.

I don't know why I'm even defending Robbo cuz I hardly ever read his wee tall stories lol!

Where we differ JDR is on how much information should be provided by the host to stimulate debate. I've argued that very general references to sporting events coupled with a buoyant narrative can leave more to be debated. Whereas you argue that more information provided by Robbo would provide us with more to debate on. Its a simple disagreement. Except that I'm right of course. Cuz I'm always tight.

What game were you at! I can understand your disappointment but not the rubbish you wrote. On paper spuds should have won, to lose 2-0 against a team of loan players, and some of them not playing for over 3 weeks, coming straight back from injury and having to play players out of position as not having a big enough team (no defenders on the Pompey bench). If you had a top flight manager he would have set his team up. England’s number one kicked the ball down the middle every time and Pompey won it most of the time, spuds could not work that out or fight for it. You lost get over it. Pompey saved you the embarrassment of playing the final. I hate a bad loser.

Manboobs the Magician in his latest adventure: “Stop Pre-Modding Konnolsky YOU Pusillanimous sWiNe”

Mandrake the Magician was in a more than usually confused state of mind. His friend Lothar had been silenced. Forever. Mandrake was feeling desperate and alone.

Outside, the vandalised bus shelters, half- a- car-tyre plant pots and car engines in shopping trolleys glittered in the moonlight. The plaintive wail of emergency response shredded the night's silence. Inside, the Magician stared out across the landscape of a room littered with discarded bottles of Deleter. The moonlike lampshade hung like a bright silver coin. The pattern of the sticky brown carpet resembled Buckinghamshire. On it, face down, lay the bleeding corpse of Lothar. Lothar the joker would never tell another joke. He had been silenced.

Who? Why? Mandrake wept bitter tears and wondered how 8 had broken through his security to commit this atrocity.

What follows is what Deleter had deleted. The following events now effectively occurred outside of time.

Mandrake had, two weeks late and tired of missing Jeremy Kyle's live seances, tried to put forward to BST a stopped clock. The resulting space/time anomaly left Mandrake believing he lived in the future and was 212 years old, having been born in 1918.

His beloved Port Vale had, in 2011, turned into a gold mine. Literally. They had discovered gold beneath the pitch during re-surfacing and for a few years Burslem resembled the Klondyke. Knarled mule-mounted old men wearing underwear with a buttoned flap on the backside that only old blokes in Westerns wear, filled the taverns and ersatz bodega bars of Burslems Quartier Latin.

Now PVFC, were World Cup holders, having been exceptionally admitted due to their dominance at club level. In 20 years only Aldershot had escaped a massive drubbing. The sky was not even a limit, as Robbie Williams had built his own spacestation, with a Death Ray targetted on Gary Barlowe and JDR. One false move.....

But this is what had been deleted. What follows is what 8 didnt want you to hear. This is what there was before.

This is what Deleter had deleted.....

Manboobs the Magician in Stop Pre-Modding Konnolsky PuSiLlAnImOuS SwInE, Ch 2

Lothar lay silenced and dead on the carpet. This is what Deleter had deleted.....

Ironically it was Lothar who came up with the idea of re-enacting the Great Train Robbery with Mandrake's train set. He had watched MotD's Alan Hansen and his evil sidekick “Lawro” perform their necromantic set piece Analysis. They drew red voodooo circles around players and cast spells on them to enhance their skills or end their career, as their whim and fancy took them.

Mandrake had bought a crate of Deleter with the proceeds from a children's party. They had paid him off when to the distress of the watching 6 year olds, he had swallowed a dove. That night, to celebrate, Mandrake and Lothar had begun to reenact the famous Robbery.

It was one of Mandrakes first missions and he had failed. He had been sent to disrupt Skorzeny's ratlines of escaping Nazis. The Robbery had been funded by Skorzeny as part of his plan to establish a 4th Reich in the jungles of Bolivia. And for a time they had succeeded. The sense of failure hunted Mandrake still. The two friends would subject to Anlysis what had gone wrong. They would draw red circles around things. And they would put it right.

“Kids” muttered Mandrake, “you dont catch any escaping Nazis with kids.”

Mandrake's Mamod steam engine puffed its lonely way around its small circle of track. The broken coffee table (Mandrake had fallen into it face first after a skinful of Deleter) was an accurate imitation of the Bridego Bridge.

The Mamod steam engine itself was the prize remnant of difficult childhood. In 1923, his evil twin Derek had shaken him awake with the whispered words “youve got a Mamod steam engine ive been playing with it for 3 hours”. Derek himslef had received a poison dart wrist watch. (Since that day, Mandrake has many times tried to remove Derek's knowledge of magic through mental battles, although it has always been only a temporary solution.)

Soon after, Mandrake had lost a hand in a Mamod steam-related methylated spirits accident, which delayed his entrance to Theron's Collegium Magikos, somewhere in the Himalayas. The disappointment grew the following Xmas. He was hoping for a prosthetic hand from Santa. Instead he got a cowboy outfit. “Look at that kid”, the bigger boys would shout “hes got a cowboy hat for a hand. And he's got coalchute underwear. Ha ha. And he's got a steam-engine for a brain.”

“Toot toot,” they shouted, “toot toot.”

The bitterness lived on within him. Mandrake, empowered with the magical properties of Deleter, grew agitated. The Glasgow train was due.

They had been playing Monopoly with real money when it all began to go wrong. Lothar had lost heavily. The Glasgow train was approaching and they had to move quickly now, but an angry Lothar insisted on a meeting to discuss Ronnie Biggs' cut. Mandrake could now hear the Glasgow train

    “Toot toot”.

Lothar dashed out to the fridge. Lothar dashed in again shouting and gesticulating in a wild panic “We've run out of methylated spirits and we're down to our last bottle of Deleter.”

Mandrake could see the Glasgow train in the near distance now.

    “Toot toot.”

That was it. He could take no more.

    “Toot toot.” Louder now.

Mandrake brought the stopped clock down heavily onto Lothar's skull. Mandrake laughed nervously and fingered the long mensur scar on his cheek. Blood leaked from Lothar's right ear into the carpet and his leopard-skin t-shirt. His “special friend” Police Chief Bradley would be well cheesed off.

The body lay there for several hours. The corpse had been disrespected. Mandrake had tripped over it twice on the way to the lav. Mandrake had drawn a big red circle around it. And Mandrake had shown no effort to dismember or otherwise dispose of the corpse, although he had given it a quick squirt with Fabreze. Mandrak would live to regret this disrespect.

Lothar's left eye, his good one, clicked open. It was red with tears and lit with vengeance.....and there was name on his lips.....listen carefully a whisper......it could still be heard if you listened carefully......"Konnolsky"...

RE: Why do you moderate "Konnolsky"?

I'd like to know how you guys can moderate somebody only because of a complaint by one person? (or 2, or 3) when the most of the blog community is not complaining. Well, that's what he says he's being moderated for is in it?

In case you're wondering, I'm talking about a certain character who goes by the name "Konnolsky". He's a lovely fella, he's brilliant and most of all he's entertaining to the extent that I for one look forward to his postings almost every-time I log on.

As far as i know the guy is clean, he does not break the House Rules anyhow. His English may not be that perfect, BUT IS THAT A CRIME? I hope not as a lot of other member's are not even British. We just love the blogs for entertainment reasons and a nice banter. And if somebody has a hate/complaint against Konnolsky, imagine what that will do to your rating if some of us fans decide to quit the BBC blog community!! (Well, that's how i feel anyways).

So, if you could, please explain why he is being moderated.

mind we can count ourselves lucky that back in those days only 1 team went down into the Conference. We could also count ourselves lucky we even had a team the following season because it was about then Paul Scally stepped in and saved us folding.

I cannot for the life of me understand why Konnolsky has been modded out of existence... I have to wonder if the simpletons that mod this site actually believe that our Konn is Andrey Lugovoy's avatar. It is beyond words that Konn's writing's could be considered offensive to anybody... there is nothing defamatory, blasphemous or derogatory in his writings. All he can be accused of is bringing a lot of humour to the comments pages. The mods have gone too far with this.

I am not sure of an appropriate action to take with this. I know of no way to make a complaint to the BBC... they ensure isolation by keeping any contact numbers well hidden... staying away from the blog for a designated amount of time (or permanently) does seem a bit like wearing green and gold. Maybe something akin to FBH's suggestion of posting STRIKE instead of making a comment would work.... if everyone took action of this type then it would be sure to come to someone's notice... and to be honest it the blog's content (especially my contribution) wouldn't suffer a lot.
