A bit much from Fergie

Post categories:

Robbo Robson | 11:13 UK time, Thursday, 8 April 2010

It's election time. Whoopee! My telly and radio seem to be clogged up with more people shouting and interrupting than ever before - or was that the missus trying to bag an earful of Masterchef, in which two plump middle-aged blokes sample amateur grub with all the joy and abandon of the Spanish Inquisition. Never has cooking been this serious.

Golf's on the menu for the next few days and Billy Payne, chairman of the Augusta National Club, took the opportunity to lob a slagging off at Tiger Woods on the eve of the tournament. Tiger has not been a role model for our children, he said.

A lot of people in golf have taken the opportunity to batter Woods for not being respectful to the game, never mind his missus, and I can't see that. Maybe he's aloof, maybe he's selfish, but that's probably what makes him so good.

He brings more interest to their silly stroll about with a ball and stick than any other player and still they play all high 'n mighty - they weren't tut-tutting in 2005 when that pitch shot rolled back into the cup on the 16th green.

Sir Alex FergusonIt gets a bit much when Fergie complains about the harassment of referees

Meanwhile, it was a rough night for Man United on Wednesday and I'm sure Sir Alex's 'typical Germans' remark will come back to haunt him.

The little throng that surrounded the baby-faced ref after Rafael's ill-judged tug - as far as I can tell it was made up of a Frenchman, a Dutchman, a Croatian and only one German, Schweinsteiger - was just a reflection of footy life.

It's lovely that Fergie is so touched by the tragedy of his Brazilian player's sending-off, but it really does get a bit much when he complains about the harassment of referees. It's like a polar bear arguing for better protection of seals.

The fact is United had it in the bag last night and they blew it right royally, although I feared the worst when Peter Drury launched into his usual Theatre of Dreams fanfare just before Olic scored.

Only commentators on football matches do the chicken counting - true fans don't even trust that the eggs are anything but empty shells. Keep Drury off commentary for any England game in June.

I wasn't surprised Ferguson risked young Wayne but he did nowt and hobbled around like a keen dog with a thorn in its paw. The real surprise package was Nani on the left wing - he went from the neutral's nana to a nerveless assassin in one half of football.

He was tremendous, as opposed to Carrick, who had one of them games when you think he's made of balsa. He was feeble, edgy and too easily dispossessed. Once again a Hargreaves would've served them better.

Still, Bayern played the 10 men brilliantly for the most part, and Robben's winner was utter class. It still beggars belief that a man of the Flying Dutchman's standard is incapable of doing more than feathering the football with his other foot.

I'm bewildered as to why he buys a boot for his right peg, but the left does make up for it pretty often.

I'm not that sorry there are no English teams in the last four. They've had it good for a long time but it marks a high-tide mark in our overpaid, over-hyped league's dominance of the tournament.

Tiger WoodsI kind of want Woods to trounce the rest of them at the Masters

The good news is that some of our lads might get a little rest before the World Cup now they've got three fewer big games to play.

Some of you (with a vested interest) will say I'm being unpatriotic but I wouldn't mind Gerrard and Johnson not having to bother with any more Europa Cup either. Ha'way, man, Benfica!

As it stands my early-season predictions are still looking right solid. Chelsea to win the Premier League, Spurs to get fourth, Hull and Pompey to go down (forget that I tipped Brum to join them will ya?).

I also thought United would win nowt and that's looking spot-on. All right they've won the Carling Cup but when Boro bagged that in 2004 I was inundated with lamebrains telling me how it wasn't worth diddly so on this occasion I'll agree with you.

And as for the Masters, well, I kind of want Woods to trounce the rest of them into the fake sand now. That'd make the Augusta National choke on its Amen Corner.

You can always dream.

Secondly, yes, I agree with many posters that Wenger and Fergie gambled on there respective players, but if it worked their decisions would be regarded as excellent decisions!

Thirdly, its great news for Platini, that no English team is in CL semi’s as this is exactly what he wanted – come on Fulham!!!!

Fourthly, Yarm was excellent night Robbo, so I expect you will be there for the next one….??

    Good Day to you Robbo.

The nice thing about your Blog/s apart from the contents, is the fact the contributors take time to actually read what others have to say
on the topics you have raised and respond accordingly in a civilised manner.

    Bearing this in mind the following is a test of everyones observational powers its an extract from a well known sports journalist;

    it reads:

" Arjen Robben's spectacular late strike wrecked Manchester United's hopes of reaching a third successive Champions League final as he sent Bayern Munich through on away goals at Old Trafford. "

Now the observational test is a very simple one

Who actually wrote it? and How should it really read? if that is you know
anything about the match you are reporting on.

The test is open to all, regardless of race, colour or creed.

on completion perhaps someone on here, far more eloquent than I can explain in a nutshell, or in depth what it says about the standard of
reporting in this Country on any match that involves IOWEU DISUNITED and why in the main they are despised throughout the world.

I am now going to read the rest of the Blog

ohhh and Hello to the rest of you.

Still - what is the measure of this "English dominance" of the champions league and what exactly is the time frame?

Since the new millenium began they have won it twice, Spain have won it 4 times (and favourites to add a fifth), Italy have won it twice, Germany and Portugal have won it once. The only other time an English team has won the "Champions League" was in 1999 then. This to me does not suggest dominance unless the measurement is in terms of number of finals and not trophies actully won. In any event, since 2000 Spain and England are tied in number of finals reached with 6 each. What is the criteria used to measure "dominance".

Joe- fair point. I guess in this country we look at the semi-final places, but more often than not the managers have been tactically exposed, and relied on money and players (Liverpool - Milan aside). Without the money they are falling back on tactics, and only Rafa can match the best in that area.

I enjoyed your observations. I must admit I'm happy also that we will see something different in the CL semi's, we are all sick of Chelsea versus Liverpool. I thought the sending off of Rafeal to be a little harsh, but every team gets bad decisions and UTD have not encountered many this year.

I actually think UTD have a tough game against Blackburn this weekend, specifically without Rooney (Unless he gets something grafted to his ankle this next couple of days). Blackburn are a "get in your face" team and I'm not sure the Carrick's and Berbatov's of this world are up for it.

If Mr. Fergusons decides to call it quits then I suggest Big Sam takes over? Why?

    1. Big Sam's gum chewing mirrors Fergie's.
    2. Big Sam does not get along with Benetiez.
    3. Big Sam will replace the timid Berbatov with the snarling Diouf
    4. Kevin Davis, will be on his way to UTD and Vidic and Ferdy's new catchphrase will be "Have It".
    5. Big Sam loves lambasting the referee.
    6. When Big Sam gets excited you can't understand him, ie: Fergie.

Six good reason Big Sam takes over at UTD.

Arsene Wenger on the other hand spends next to nothing (or makes a profit, as he did this season) for years and they reached the last 8 of the Champions League (probably going out to the eventual winners) and are in the hunt for the league. I would guess that Chelsea and Manchester utd have been spending £30m per season more than Arsenal for the last 6 years so I am surprised that people think it is strange that Arsenal have not won anything for 4 years and even more surprised that Arsene Wenger does not get the respect he deserves (although he is not beyond criticism).

I am not an Arsenal fan but the state of play seems quite clear to me.

Now, I can accept that there were more chances created once Ngog came on, but why were both Torres and Ngog kept on pitch? surely, you need all your attacking options when you are desperate for a goal.

I do hope we could bring Torres to Arsenal. He will get chances by the truck load.

Also, we are used to having our top strikers conked half the season anyway.

This can change of course this year if Lyon meet Inter in the final, but it still won't affect English dominance.

I can't believe I am the only person to notice that the young man has NEVER won the ball from an opponent without conceding a free-kick? My informants tell me that he has received intensive coaching in the art of (split-seconds late) tackling from Paul Scholes (and if you believe that Scholes' misdemeanours in this regard are a product of "an attackers clumsiness" you are so naive you probably believe in the tooth-fairy and Santa) and in the techniques of man-marking at the Gary Neville School of Wrestling on Oxford Road.
I also have to take issue with the earlier comments about the relative size of fan-base (particularly re Liverpool.) Having travelled all over the world with my job over the last 30 years I think I'm right in saying that the mainstay of United's fan-base is in the Far-East. Real Madrid obviously dominate in Spain, Portugal & Latin America - Liverpool, far from being "ignored" are probably the best supported club in the rest of Europe. However, lack of a sense of perspective seems to be a pre-requisite of supporting MUFC, and would certainly disqualify any applicant for the manager's job.

But this united team just doesn't have that about them, the way they have had to dig deep and scrape results this year, and also been held to draws by smaller clubs, they seem, dare i say it, like Liverpool... Still maintaining that undeniable BIG CLUB mentality, but lacking that guileted edge to pull it off convincingly... You RBA92, is what can only be branded as an absolute dreamer, and are one of many that would love to see United's glory days come to an end.

United don't get any more decisons go their way than any other team, the difference is United capitalise on breaks better than any other team in the world.

My reply to that utter tosh, and that is not rude because I will prove it to be.

Scraping results is one of the best habits to have in the business. Up until Christmas United played very poorly, not much better than Liverpool admittedly, yet United are very much in the title mix and Liverpool are fluctuating between 6, 7 and 8th position, and in that lies the difference.

    United draws in the League:

    Sunderland home (2-2)

    Birmingham away (1-1)

    Villa away (1-1)

That is the least draws in the league, 3!

United are by far and way the biggest club in England and are probably the second biggest club in the World, behind Real!!

And having the ability to pull of our big club status convincly. I think our trophy haul and the manner in which we have won those trophies more than resembles that of a big club!

I would say Burnley are definitively not BORING.

    My reply:

But surely it gets a bit monotonous having to watch Brian Jensen have to pick the ball out of the back of his net.

The poor fella has developed a long-term repetitive strain injury in his back, due to bending over and picking balls out of his net.

Mr jensen went to claims direct about it, they said they couldn't help, but Jensen has wrpapped up a long-term sponsor for Burnley.

Claims direct have gone into a long-term contract with Burnley, and have pledged to sponsor burnley as long as they are a Premier League club.

From that we can presume either:

They know something we don't and they have signed Messi and Ronaldo (on loan) from Barca and Madrid respectively, with Clarke Carlisle, and Chris Eagles going the other way.

Their not football fans at Claims Direct, so they are unaware Burnley are in a periless position.

They have a different definition to long term than mostof us!

Yes and Burnley did beat Man United!

This can change of course this year if Lyon meet Inter in the final, but it still won't affect English dominance.
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

What are you basing this on?

The Champions League began in 1994 I think. Since then England have had 3 winners and 7 finalists (including the teams that won).

Italy has 4 winners and 9 finalists.

Spain has 5 winners and 7 finalists.

Germany has 2 winners and 4 finalists.

Its only in the last 4/5 years that England can claim to be the most successful nation in the champions league but with only 2 wins it hardly equates to dominance. The primary measure must surely be in the actual winner of the trophy and in the event its close then look at finalists etc but since 2000 Spain have won it 4 times, England and Italy twice. Hardly English dominance.

This hope has now been destroyed, as not even United are deluded enough to dream of a champions league final having been knocked out in the quarters. It is now Bayern, of the two, who are hoping to reach the final.

completely disagree on Tiger/completely agree on Fergie (how could one not?!)

all this "Golf desperately needs Tiger" sentiment - really? 'cause i loved golf as much B.T. than i do now. NETWORKS need Tiger to get those who didn't grow up with golf, or even play golf - but the game will always be bigger than the star.

let's pretend Tigergate never happened - he's still conducted himself like a spoilt brat in a "gentleman's game"
he's a right _____ to the fans (admiring kids included!), as engaging as a piece of recycled plastic with the media, and his on-course antics alternate between embittered Job-like despair to 'roid-rage fist pumps complete with pretend Tiger growl... embarrassing... quite a bit like Fergie!

Fergie's routine: talk sideways regarding a key injury in the run-up to a match, pretend to be shocked at "miracle recovery", blame ref for incompetence, or outright bias, redefine hypocrisy in condemning the opposition's conduct, and in a highly offensive manner... it was all entertaining the first twenty-odd times.

i personally think the last four is looking very tasty!
will take some amazing negative football from Inter to go through, and i can't believe this is Lyon's furthest run?! seemed like they were in the last stages every year with the Juninho-led teams.

    Hi Jamie,

Ok, let me level with you as you seem like a nice guy, with joked before. United are a huge cluband always will be, a couple of weeks ago a lot of united fans were on here sneering at all those who dared question the reign as the dominant force of football, since then they have had a major defeat in the league a massive blow to thier title hopes and been knocked out of the CL... In all this isn't the grandest time for them, they are in transition, and it is a distinct possibility that they may come out the other side and not return to being as dominant as they have been in the past... This is possible, it happens to clubs all the time as it happens to nations, governments, monarchies etc... However many united fans refuse to except this as even a posibility, so in an exercise aimed purely at my entertainment and rods frustration (sorry rod you just bite every single time, and i'd leave collie alone but you think i'm a chelsea fan!) i decided to play devils advocate in supporing the fact that it could all be coming to an end...
Will it? I do not know, nor do icare, unless you drop in to league 2 whatever happens in the airy fairy ponce league is of no great interest to me. But you know what maybe it is... is it so hard to say it?

Now on to casting aspertions upon my self such as i must be sad and lonely and this is why i need to drag down united... I have a very full very happy life, beautiful wife, beautiful kids and upto 5th in the league... Just a bit of fun, y;all should not take football so serious...

United's team hasnt been getting weaker year on year which was my argument if you'd read it properly . Ferguson could manage for another 10 years no doubt so its not an issue. There is a huge debt but for the next 5 years at least its manageable so we can talk about it then. United played Inter in the 2nd round last year and barely got through it, luck was with them when it wasnt last night. Valencia and Nani looked awesome last night. When Hargreaves and Anderson are back our midfield will be bursting at the seams with young and old. I'm sorry but you're talking a load of tosh!

For those that obviously fail to see the significance of the quote may i respectfully remind all, including that Bimbo who fronts You are on Sky Sports that IOWEU were NOT! on thier way to a third successive Final! they were on their way to a third successive SEMI-FINAL.

I am just gobsmaked by such bloody arrogance and also dis-respect for
Bordeux whom IOWEU would have to play before " buying your tickets to the Final "

as i say this is passed down the glory hunting food chain, it is a very poor piece of journalism .

    so to confirm:

IOWEU were knocked out of the Quarter Finals not the Semi-Finals

IOWEU will no longer feature in this years CL

They were beaten fair and square by a very good and smart German Team

Fergy's use of the Rooney injury was disgracefull as was Rooneys pathetic attempts during the game to limp one minute and then be sprinting like a Cheetah the next.

as for his remarks about " typical germans " it was said in the heat of
the momment as for him being accused of " racism " utter NONSENSE!

I wont hide my joy at seeing them fail, though this is painfull for many of the genuine Machester United Surporters its a reality check for all those that have jumped on thier bandwagon and they deserve it as well.

I thinks its just misusage of "domination". Theyve probably been the most successful in the last 5 year period but have only actually won the cup twice which is hardly dominating it.

Now that no English team has made the semis it must automatically mean the end of some kind of era. Rubbish in my view.

Since the Champions League officially began I would in terms of success it goes:

    Spain
    Italy
    England
    Germany

No one country has ever dominated it.

Absolutely agree UD, everyone here is trying their best to convince United fans that last night was further confirmation of United's demise. The first half performance didn't show me that. The performances by Nani, Valencia, Rafael and Gibson show we've young players beginning to come to the boil. I'm sorry lads but we're not going anywhere other than above and beyond! He has all the tools to be something similar to Ronaldo. The main thing Ronaldo has though is confidence beyond 100% which Nani is way short of. He needs to get his ego massaged a bit then he can be a truly great player. Hes signed a new contract so I see him being at Old Trafford for at least another year or 2. I'd say give him a chance (again lol), to be honest if we hadnt bought Nani years ago, we wouldve bought him in the summer because hes the only player I know of who is anywhere near like Ronaldo. Have you heard of this Mexican guy they're buying?

according to the chief sportswriter we were all actually watching a Semi-Final. Sounds daft i know, i had to read it 50 times as well.

anyways, it was blatently obvious to one and all that all the Blogs would be concentrateing on the various excuses, with claims and counter claims from all camps about the outcome of the game.

For three of the 4 halfs of football they played I thought Bayern were better.

Better side in both halves of the first leg and deserved the win.

Comprehensively the worse team in the first half of Old Trafford but the better team in the second half.

With that said - 3 of the Bayern back 4 or as poor defensively as I think I have seen in the late stages of the CL. They have shipped so many goals - 5 vs Fiorentina, 5 vs Man Utd and really look to be out of sorts.

Man Utd were unlucky with Rooney being not fully fit and overall I think they are the better side when at full strength - Id take Bayerns midfield but Man Utd have a vastly better defence especially at CB and are also stronger up front with Rooney. However Id take Ribery, Robben, Van Bommell and Schweinsteiger over Valencia, Nani, Carrick and Fletcher.

I dont think Man Utd can complain too heavily over the two legs. They should have had the game dead and buried at 3-0 but they didnt see it out at Bayern were good for their goal in the second half.

Still - what is the measure of this "English dominance" of the champions league and what exactly is the time frame?

    ***********************************************************

I've never been too impressed with your comments JDR but on dominance, how about the UEFA coefficient, i.e. the figures UEFA actually use to decide how many places each team gets in the competition? They've recently been in the news because Italy are about to lose their fourth place to Germany. Wikipedia it - they rate on a 5 year period and England are top. Spain do run them quite close - thanks mainly to Barcelona's brilliance, of course.

It's equally asinine to complain about a rushed job when you know the article was posted about 14 hours after the conclusion of the Man U / Bayern Munich match. Pretty impressive I thought, especially given that most of us were asleep during that period!

To "dominate" something you have to win it more often than not. Just because English teams are ranked higher in a coeficient has little or no relevance.

Have England Dominated the UEFA Cup/Europa League aswell then?

At absolute best you could say English sides have been the most successful in the last 4 years but this not dominating something. Phil Taylor dominates darts. England do not dominate the Champions League.

And yes the blog does seem rushed, because as you alluded to it probably was.

He's better now Tone - I'd take a fighting albeit hasty upending of their best player over the pathetic handball Neville gave away in the first leg. I would be happy if he was played for the rest of the season, win lose or draw. We have to make the break sooner or later. May as well do it now. I can't see us winning the premiership even only two points behind. Now's the time to give players like Rafael the starts they need. Good luck tonight (?) btw.

You can say in the last 3/4 years England have been best represented and the most successful league in the competition - thats fairly straightforward. But I fail to see how this can be classified as dominating the competion when Barcelona and Milan have won it twice in recent times compared with one for Man Utd and one for Liverpool. Its especially obscure given how good Barcelona have been in the period aswell.

I just think its a loose and misplaced term. To dominate you need something a bit more. Most successful of recent years, but not dominating.

Goal line technology will definitely come, Fifa are just being old grumpy men about it because they're all grumpy old men. I'm not so sure about using video to analyse fouling in the box because EVERYONE does it. The was people play football would have to be revised. Great defenders like Lucio or Carvalho could become redundant overnight.

I have now the solution in respect of Technology being used.

    bear with me.......

right, what you do is impregnate all balls ( well not all but you know what i mean ) with a chip, not an oven chip, but a microchip.
This is very similar to the system used by the machines that pick 6 numbers in the National Lottery, and also explains why you have a fat chance of winning! anyways the Ball has this Microchip which is wired for sound, which in turn is hooked up to the Referee.

the Penalty areas and touchlines are then sorta electrified ( a good way of stopping the Delap throw ins as well ) now then...
The Ball is the only object on the field of play, with a chip in it as it gets kicked about etc, its continually recieving signals to the electrified lines and penalty areas,a bit like Sonar each time it crosses the said lines it lets out a Beep or if you prefer a Beep Beep, this new Technological advancement could be called Road Runner.

now then, these Beeps may well miff the referee of something chronic but it only Beeps when the ball, with the Beep Receptor fitted crosses the electro senseing lines.

    Now then....

imagine a goal mouth scramble..the ball does not send a Beep to the Ref until it crosses the line, the Ref can adjust the tone of the Beep if he wishes he can in fact adjust the Beep to a sorta Ring Tone, so instead of a Beep or Beep Beep he could chose the opening Passagae( thats french for passage by the way ) of Beethovens 5th Symphony or a lil jingle from the Pet Shop Boys or if he desires the opening to Bach's Tocatta and Fugue in D Minor. This obviously depends on the refs taste in music, caution however should be observed, more than 10 secs of that song You,ll Never Walk Alone would be more than enough to induce suicide as of course would any Beatles Songs.

    now then.....

imagine the ball in open play, in fact make that expansive play, for those having difficulty with this, just picture Arsenal playing and you will get the idea. The Ball is continually activated via the Chip, the lines as i say have infrared sensors etc, the Ball goes out for a throw in and of goes the Beep Beep or Beethovens 5th, this alerts the Referee that the ball has indeed crossed the line, he blows his Whistle, the throw in is taken by the Player etc.

    now then.....

balls, ive lost my train of thought....wont be a mo I've gone to see if i can find it.

    hits send, BRB

    following on from post 492..

    now then.....

I can hear all you doubters say " it will never work " but I would like to remind you all that if you can Plant an Excocet Missile smack bang in the middle of a Red Cross Tent in Iraq from a warship bobbing about in the Pacific Ocean then you can certainly implant a Ball or erm Balls'ys with a Chip or Two.

    now then......

To take matters further, you could even fit all Balls with mini video cameras, those assuming this would not work i would remind you that such devices are used by the security forces in covert spying operations both home and abroad, the same systems are also used for undercover pervert operations ( but we wont go there ) eg: CCTV etc etc Speed Camera's.

This mini camera will pick up the divers etc and beam the images back to the 8th Official who again via a series of Beeps or Ringtones alert the Ref that someone has tried to decieve him/her, i say her because we will soon have women dressed in black or gold etc on the field of play and adjudicateing in the game at the highest level.

so there you have it problems solved

discuss? thats a species of Tropical Fish by the way.
