Robbo's title run-in

Post categories:

Robbo Robson | 13:03 UK time, Monday, 22 March 2010

OK. I've combed the fixture list - first thing I've combed since me wedding day - and I reckon I can announce who is going to win the Premier League - and how (with a little help from the BBC Sport Premier League Predictor). (And if you want to see Match of the Day 2's effort, click here.)

Wednesday 24 March
Pompey 1 Chelsea 2. Didier Drogba's early opener is equalised when the tiniest man in Portsmouth gets above Paulo Ferreira to score an equaliser. Drogba is on the floor, but the physio brings on a dummy and just when it looks like he's going to spit it out, Frank Lampard sneaks in for the winner.
United 69 Chelsea 68 Arsenal 67

Saturday 27 March
Birmingham 0 Arsenal 2; Bolton 1 Man Utd 3.
Christian Benitez is unavailable, as a bloke called Chucho wants his shirt back and
Stephen Carr remembers why he retired, as that cat Andrey Arshavin treats him like a ball of wool. Easy win. United recover from the shock of a Bolton Wanderers team employing the sides of their feet to shift the ball around the park, and a late brace by Wayne Rooney seals it.

Chelsea 1 Villa 1
Chelsea comfortably in charge (after Drogba's early opener) until Martin O'Neill brings on Emile Heskey as a late substitute and John Terry is caught hopelessly out of position for the big man's equaliser.
United 72 Arsenal 70 Chelsea 69
Bob CrowBob Crow knows a lot about strikers
Saturday 3 April
Arsenal 4 Wolves 1; Man Utd 1 Chelsea 1
In the interests of fair play, Mick McCarthy picks a Wolverhampton Weight-Watchers XI and Arsenal tear them apart. The Big One is a niggly affair, with Drogba's early opener equalised in the 19th minute of injury time by Federico Macheda.
United 73 Arsenal 73 Chelsea 70

Saturday 10 April
Tottenham 2 Arsenal 1
'Arry's got fewer strikers than a Willie Walsh boardroom, so up front he pairs a portly Clive Allen with Bob Crow of the RMT. A rare outing for Lucasz Fabianski results in two late goals for Spurs - the winner coming from a Sol Campbell backpass. Arsene Wenger blames the fourth official.

Sunday 11 April
Blackburn 0 Man United 1
Gary Neville scores the winner. The goal celebrations are not shown before the watershed.

Tuesday 13 April
Chelsea 2 Bolton 0
After Drogba's early opener, a lot of huffing and puffing until Salomon Kalou tucks away a late winner. Police are still seeking the rider of the motorbike that left the tyre-marks on the top of his head.
United 76 Arsenal 73 Chelsea 73

Saturday 17 April
Man City 2 Man Utd 1
Huge setback for United as the nouveau riches plunder the points after a World Cup place-winning performance by the brilliant Adam Johnson - what a player and thank goodness Middlesbrough unearthed such a jewel for the nation, eh? Rooney is injured.

Tottenham 1 Chelsea 2
After Drogba's early opener, Spurs struggle - but Jermain Defoe looks to have earned a point when he tucks away an offside sitter. However, Alex wins the points for the Blue Meanies with a 70-yard free-kick. Carlo Ancelotti insists he is unsurprised, but Nasa are quick to announce that they are launching a mission to recover the boss's left eyebrow from the ionosphere.

Sunday 18 April
Wigan 0 Arsenal 5
"It's always a question of which Wigan will turn up", suggests 5Live's Mike Ingham. Turns out it's the one that hovers in the doorway wondering whether it should have left the house this morning. Nicklas Bendtner is unchallenged so frequently it looks like Titus Bramble's on his Blackberry. Jason Scotland makes a start up front again... but it's not a name to inspire footballing confidence.
United 76 Arsenal 76 Chelsea 76

(It's close or what, folks?)
Saturday 24 April
Arsenal 2 Man City 2
Roberto Mancini leaves Patrick Vieira on the bench - the one outside the big Asda at Eastlands. Emmanuel Adebayor scores for Citeh -and starts a mad dash towards the new Clock End in waiting.

Stewards bring him to the ground and an almighty melee ensues. Toure nabs a goal 'n all, but Arsene Wenger is delighted with his players' "tenacity, spirit, technical ability and lovely pretty passing" as Samir Nasri and Alex Song score to earn the Gunners a point.

Sunday 25 April
Chelsea 2 Stoke 1; Man U 1 Spurs 1
After Drogba's early opener, a Rory Delap long-throw is headed in by... well, someone... and it takes the return of Michael Essien to prompt victory.
Didier Drogba and Nicolas AnelkaWill Drogba be on the scoresheet again?

Rooney is unfit and the X-rays of his metatarsal are selling in the tabloids for 50 grand a pop - but United still grab a penalty after Valencia is pulled back in the centre-circle. Bob Crow nabs a brave equaliser, despite a crunching challenge from Nemanja Vidic. Crow refuses to play on 'cos of concerns for the safety of his members.
Chelsea 79 Man U 77 Arsenal 77

Saturday 1 May
Blackburn 1 Arsenal 2; Liverpool 1 Chelsea 1; Sunderland 1 Man Utd 3
Mayday! Mayday! Arsenal are in trouble until El-Hadji Diouf gets sent off for spitting at a corner-flag and kicking himself in the head.

A late winner from Thomas Vermaelen seals the points. At Anfield, after Drogba's early opener, Liverpool get a deserved draw. Fernando Torres knocks spots off the pitch and John Terry. Steven Gerrard's point-grabbing penalty, scored after a dubious plummet by the skipper, is tucked away confidently after he's removed the wetsuit and flippers.

At the Stadium of Light, Scholesy and Giggsy are chatting about their box sets of Lark Rise to Candleford when Fergie calls them on to nab a goal each as United comfortably overturn a surprisingly cheerful Steve Bruce.
Man U 80 (GD +51) Arsenal 80 (GD +50) Chelsea 80 (GD +47)

Sunday May 9
The last Sunday.... it looks a tad forlorn for Chelsea, but wait! They've got Wigan at home! Arsenal are confronting a Fulham team obsessing about their Europa Cup Final against Liverpool. And United welcome back Wayne Rooney with his metatarsal magically healed, following tea and a chat with some old dear called Eileen Drewery.

Chelsea go goal-crazy at the Bridge - even Michael Ballack looks interested. United can't bag a second against a resolute Stoke. Arsenal need another to ensure victory against Fulham and they get it through the Ghost of Michael Thomas. The final scores are: Man U 1 Stoke 0; Arsenal 2 Fulham 0; Chelsea 5 Wigan 0.

Final table:
Man U 83 (+52); Arsenal 83 (+52); Chelsea 83 (+52)
And Arsenal are champions on goals scored. Ridiculous.

And here's the thing: it could really be this close. Count every goal, my friends. This is the best season in living memory.

nb: If you want to find out who will finish top, use the Premier League Predictor (you only need to fill in the results of the 'Big Three').

    Top blog as always.

This is what I ended up with.

    Top 8:

Man Utd top with 88 points.
Arsenal also on 88 but with worse goal difference (8 goals less).
Chelsea I have on 87 points. Next up is
Spurs clinching 4th on 68 points ahead of
Man City also on 68 points but with 8 less goals.
    Liverpool 6th on 67 and
    Villa on 65 ahead of
    Everton who have 60.

At the bottom I have Portsmouth (16 points) then Burnley (24) then Hull (28) going down. I have West ham on 33 and Bolton on 35.

Admittedly I didn't predict too many surprise results but there are bound to be some (wouldn't have predicted Blackburn drawing with Chelsea).

Jacks mate to tell you the truth I just put down the results I reckoned would happen and by the time I got to the last Sunday it was up for grabs. Obviously there was a bit of massaging of the figures re goal difference, but nothing I would have to be up infront of the Beeb's top brass for. However, is it really going to be that close? When I did play the predictor calculator, I saw Arsenal running away with the title.

And here's what I posted in my prev blog (tried to make story like you, but not as good as you)

    1) Arsenal win of course with 88 points, 5 points clear of rivals.
    2) United level on 83 points and superior goal difference of +54
    3) Chelsea on 83 points with goal difference of +52
    4) Aston Villa creep to 4th place finish with 69, just by a margin of 1 point over Spurs.
    5) Tottenham Spurs finish 5th on 68 points. Missing out largely due to results against United and Arsenal.
    6) City after all spending finish on 68 points with goal difference +22 which is 6 less than Spurs.
    7) Liverpool. No need to say anything. They have been poor.

And the relegated teams are Hull, Burnley and Portsmouth.

I have to admit as Spurs fan I was dissappointed to find out that my predictions had City taking fourth by 3 points, though for symmetry I gave them the benefit of a 4-3 scoreline in the manchester derby so if Utd win that Spurs will take fourth on goal difference.

Anyway, I lost the results so I'm doing it again. Everything could change. Specifically, City could get a few less points than they got last time or Spurs could get a few more.

City will be deducted 12 points for having to much money and also an addition 6 points because they have a manager who never complains.

Spurs & Villa will also have points deducted because they have been deemed to attacking.

In an FA decision, the complete UTD squad have been re-nationalized and thus become English and therefore are now the England team for South Africa, Capello is sacked and Ferguson replaces him.

UTD win the PL, CL, World Club Championship, World Cup on penalties against Spain when Fernando Torres misses his penalty, he actually misses the ball and hits the penalty spot, scuffing his shot into Van Der Sar grateful hands.

My top 4 through the predictor had Arsenal clinching the title with a +2 goal difference over Un**ed, 3 points ahead of Chelsea in third place - and Aston Villa finding a very good vein of form to snatch 4th from the grasp of Tottenham and Liverpool - who finish 5th and 6th respectively.

I compiled this after I found these "Red tinted glasses" on the metro-link that runs from Manchester to Bury, its amazing how ones opinions are impacted when you see things one way only.

That last paragraph sums its up perfectly. Not that United fans see it one way only but everyone else. Youse all need to wise up and stop prevailing these myths which are born out've pure jealousy.

1 - Fergie time - i bet of Torres had equalised, the 5/6 mins of injury time would've been seen as Fergie time.
2 - Penalties at old trafford - Teams hardly ever attack united that much at old trafford so you're not gonna get a lot of pens.
3 - No united fans live in Manchester Area - this is the worst of the lot. If theres no united fans in Manchester, how'd they fill Old Trafford 30/40 years ago?

On the last day of the season, a brown envelope full of documentation which proves that Portsmouth's financial plight is entirely due to the molasses-soiled digits of one H. Redknapp is unearthed. Portsmouth are awarded all the points that Tottenham have gained since Redknapp's arrival at White Hart Lane last season, with Spurs being debited the same amount. Portsmouth are therefore crowned Premier League champions & subsequently celebrate an historic double by overcoming the hapless Spurs 8-0 in the FA Cup Final with 4 goals each from Crouch & Defoe, whom Tottenham have been compelled to sell back to Pompey for a combined fee of 20p. Sadly, none of this is enough to save Avram Grant, who is sacked 10 minutes after the final's final whistle. Tottenham are also automatically relegated by 3 divisions and will begin next season with a tricky local Derby away to Dagenham & Redbridge.

Liverpool win the Europa Cup with a 174th minute penalty awarded by ref M Clattenberg after Steven Gerrard misjudges a molehill 7 yards outside the opponents' area. Manager Rafael Benitez is rewarded with a new 485 year contract.

Extra time is still being played in the World Cup Final between North & South Korea [dubbed "the final to end all finals"].

Port Vale sack Mickey Adams and replace him with Owd Grandad Pigott.

    I live in hope...

One thing for sure is that both Chelsea and Manchester United can win the title without needing any help from other teams/results because if either of them win all their remaining matches then they will lift the trophy.

Arsenal on the other hand will require both Chelsea and Manchester United to slip up to have any chance of them becoming champions so regardless of how easy/hard the run in is they have to rely on others.

So the people who keep saying that it is Arsenal's title to lose are well talking out of their Arsenal.

There's nothing like that warm comfortable feeling of a prime spot on the fence. I actually think City hold the key to this one playing as they will, Arsenal and United. I expect us to beat Chelsea but I'm just hoping that result doesn't make the team complacent as that is just one match in a long finishing straight.

Manchester United have experience and diversity not even Chelsea have, their aging Galacticos perform badly under pressure and have no real game plan.

Arsenal are a one trick pony but more recently have been more creative when it comes down to it and are digging deep when it matters. Though I feel one bad result could cause a series of unfortunate events.

Manchester United have come to life slowly but surely and are now easily the front runners in this campaign. Rooney aside, goals will come from somewhere even if Rooney is injured and watching Fletcher give Gerrard a lesson on how to be a midfielder on Sunday was funny to watch.

Although we need him for England, Gerrard can't punch them last grasp belters in forever whereas Fletcher has constant determination and delivers every single game he plays in.

Man U will win by at least 4 clear points with Arsenal stealing second and Chelsea wondering if they need a rehaul. Especially as Mourinho proved Abromovich is a big baby and should never have got rid of him so quickly.

Spurs will nick fourth as they become more desperate for it, as City settle with fifth. Sacking their manager and selling half their team in the process. Villa will come in just behind Liverpool who will both make Europe only because United won the Carling Cup as Spurs also laugh at Chelsea's form in an entertaining Final that Drogba gets sent off in for diving twice in a minute.

Fulham will show Liverpool true determination in the Europa Cup final as they win and Torres breaks his leg after getting his studs caught in the turf as he kicks the penalty spot, Mascherano breaks his jaw from talking too much, and Benitez' remaining hair ges burnt off as a flare is thrown from the crowd at him after punching the referee in the face for disallowing a goal after the half time whistle was blown.

Fourth, fifth and sixth: Spurs, Villa and City level on 70 points, but Spurs getting fourth and Villa fifth thanks to a superior goal difference (32, 26, 23 respectively). Again, I have my doubts reading that back.

Going down: Portsmouth bottom, obviously, on 20. Burnley on 30, Hull on 31, and Wigan avoiding the drop by two points. Intriguingly those two meet on the second to last weekend of the season.

Seriously Robbo, anyone can do your job.

Sorry to come back so late, I have a job. Babies are interesting, so is science, and even certain females look pretty interesting, but once you get talking to them or about them, you can pretty quickly separate the best from the interesting, get my drift? In other words lots of shocking football some terrible defeats, but still interesting, I prefer when my time waltz the league. That would be best... I never thought I'd say or write this, but I would love Arsenal to win this year. They are a lovely team to watch, score lots of goals, it'll end the recent Chelsea United domination, and it might even stop Arsene Wenger's whingeing.
But for God's sake please don't tempt fate by even joking about Rooney getting injured. Let's face it, without him England have no chance whatsoever of lifting the World Cup, for who else have we really got who's world class? Gerrard may have been, but his form for England these days is as uninspiring as his club team. And even with Rooney firing on all cylinders, when it comes to the crunch of the knockout stages, our chances of beating the likes of Spain or Brazil are pretty slim.

With reference to the point by Robbo "in the 19th minute of injury time.."
Can someone at the BBC please inform their employees reporting and presenting football that knowing the rules is an essential part of the job.
Clearly none of the "pundits" nor the journos know that there is no rule that only permits one team to score in 'injury' time. It doesn't matter how many minutes the referee adds, both teams can score in added time IF THEY TRY, it's not 'Fergie time' nor is it 'added time until United score' as you try to perpetuate.
Perhaps when your staff finally grasp the concepts, (especially the rules of offside, allowing advantage and foul play) they can stop shrugging their shoulders and regurgitating "it's a grey area" and "nobody really knows what the rules are". Well, the FA book cost £4. Read it and you will know what the rules are.
Messer Lawrenson, Dixon, Hansen et al are being paid huge sums of public money to summarise and explain the match, not act like pub idiots. If they don't know the laws of the game, they should be fired for incompetence and be replaced by fans who do have a clue what's going on.
P.S. Nice of Robbo to notice "Stevie G" is as much of a diving cheat as Drogba.

Robbo nice work its nice to see a pundit saying something nice about arsenal for once and saying were going to the win league is quite flattering but everyone is saying utd to win im sure thats the case if tomorrow rooney got injured i think that would have a big effect on their team and thier title chances in terms of goals.

I dont know whos going to win it and im not going to make bold predictions. Tseason has had its suripises and shocks already so ive got my fingers cross for arsenal if we can win our keys games which us the derby and the home against city i believe we have a good shot at taking the title back to north london !

Stunned you had to ask but then your lot had a strange manager for a long time so I will forgive you. He wasn't your best, but he was interesting.

But its not all bad news.

Huddersfield United, who were the first club to win the English top division 3 times, or Preston North End who were the first to win 2 consecutive titles, never managed to win the English top division ever again.

After winning it for the 19th time, CL or not, SAF will retire. Enormous debt. Scholes, Giggs, Neville, Rio way past their best. Rooney off to Spain (see enormous debt).

So, I say, lets be calm about it and let manchester united win it 4 on the trot.

3 - Wenger could admit that all this everyone's-trying-to-break-our-legs rubbish is a way to psych up his team(stop making good honest players like Taylor and Shawcross suffer personally you French so-and-so)

4 - Benitez will accept everythings his fault and resign

5 - Arsenal will lose to Spurs

    6 - Drogba will finally realise he's c * * t

7 - Torres will be exposed as a vigilante fox hunter

8 - Fabregas will accept an offer to Derry City FC

9 - Wenger could admit that he said the title bid from Arsenal was over after the loss against Chelsea instead of pretending like hes always said otherwise

10 - United prove that they've the best team spirit and best player( possibly in the world, personally think its Ronaldo but most disagree) and win the league deservedly yet receive jealous spoutings of conspiracies from the masses ** This is most likley I think **

Chelsea? We were robbed, plain and simple. Liverpool? Evenly matched game, undone by Rios back. Villa and Fulham both occured when our back 4 was shot to pieces resulting in Fletcher playing centre half! Everton was probably the most disappointing especially as we took the lead but we visibly tired after the exertions in Milan.

Seriously though, with all due respect, please dont forget that its called a season for no other reason. There are ups and downs, many factors beyound human control, incompetent refs, injuries, cold weather, affairs, etc. etc.

And please dont discredit the 'lesser' teams by insulting them that their triumphs against the mighty United were only of the failings of Man U but not the efforts of their players, managers, fans or ball boys with towels.

    Morning lads/ lasses (442),

Spit looking at the teams you have listed United losing to, Burnley aside (and let's consider it was their first home premier league game) they are all very respectable teams to lose to.

I think that is why United generally win the title because they don't drop silly points, if they do drop points they do it at respectable places.

If you look at Chelsea, they have drawn with Hull, lost to Wigan, drawn with an improving Blackburn team, drawn at home to Everton (expect them to win at home, lost to Villa away ( a resultI would class as not a calamity).

Arsenal have drawn at Burnley, drawn at home to Everton (again because at home expect to win, lost to City (not a disaster) been trounced by United and Chelsea (harmful mentally but not teams it is exactly embaressing to lose to).

Another point (excuse the pun) I would like to bring up is people lamenting the number of defeats a team has. When United had lost 5 before Christmas people were saying it would be very difficult for them to win the league. Igf they had drawn those games it is only ficve less points, and the prospect of United not winning the league would not being discussed.

My number of draws can be more costly than the number of defeats.

Valid point Baggie. I think if Bent had stayed at Spurs and played as much as Defoe he would have atleast 25 goals this season as he places his shots rather than just hitting them as hard as he can and hopes (like Defoe)!
Imagine if he was at Arsenal instead of Bendtner as they create so many chances, he would be up there with a similar record to Rooney - in my opinion anyway..........

I gave reasons as to why United lost the 6 games they have so far. They are very valid reasons.

Just like Arsenal and Chelsea have very valid reasons for the defeats they have suffered.

I agree that there are ups and downs and a number of other factors but i listed the key factors resulting in United defeats. Simple.

Plus i didnt say United werent trying to win did I? I watched all 6 defeats and we tried to win all of them.

I think that is why United generally win the title because they don't drop silly points, if they do drop points they do it at respectable places.

THat is true, Bent does seem to have a good conversion rate of chances, where as Defoe gets more chacnes but doesn't seem to put them away, we need someone who likes stats to go back and see the shot to goal ratio of our strikers, as in international football you get fwere chances than domestic so we need the clinical finishers.

Man Utd had their injury problems earlier but the squad eems to be coming together now at the right time. Alot will depend on keeping Rooneys goal scoring form going and while it doesnt look like he is going to stop any time soon the fixtures keep on coming and theres alot resting on his shoulders. I can also see them making the CL final which will add up. If Man Utd do end up losing the title I would guess its because Ferguson gambles on a weakened side and rests Rooney and ends up dropping points that way. Still tip them to win though.

Arsenal certainly have the most favourable run in and in my view will not get past a superior Barcelona in the CL leaving them free to give the League their full attention. Still a number of weak links and potential for inconsistency in the team which means despite having an easier run in I can still see them dropping enough points to allow Man Utd retain.

You would not class a draw against Burnley/ Hull for Man United as an acceptable result, - especially at this time in the season.

As for Stoke. Their home record especially, and general premier league record shows that they are very tough team to beat, the likes of Burnely/ Hull are yet and probably aren't likely to establish themeslves as a team like that!

Yes Ngog I am confident we will win the league. In my opinion we are playing better now than at any stage last season. This time lasy year we were flagging, this season we only appear to be hitting top form.

I personally feel we may just edge Chelsea at OT. Spurs at home could be very tricky. Last year when we played them (the 5-2 comeback) they were midtable with nothing to go for except the old cliche pride.

This year they are right in the mix for 4th so credit to them.

Obviously City away is tough. I think we can comfortable avoid defeat should wish, but I know Fergie won't just settle for a draw and nor should we!

Arsenal to lose at Spurs, and drop points to City at home and somewhere else.

Chelsea to draw at home to Villa (this weekend), and hopefully implode for the rest of the year/ season!

    Come on!!
