Begging you for Messi

Post categories:

Robbo Robson | 12:27 UK time, Thursday, 18 March 2010

It's been one of them weeks when the great and good of British football conduct a kind of continental love-in... a kind of Europhilia, if you will.

There are still some people who'll tell you the French are the best cooks (untrue: too much cream and I prefer to have my meat a bit closer to death before I eat it); that the Italians are the best lovers (untrue, unless Teesside is full of Romans and Neapolitans and beyond Chris Rea's Dad, I can't think of any); that the Swedes are the most beautiful (true: I went to Stockholm a while back and frankly the wife was rolling me tongue back into me gob like a liquorice wheel every five seconds.)

When it comes to footy, there are other statements we hold self-evidently to be true:
1. Jose Mourinho is a tactical mastermind.
2. Didier Drogba holds the world record for getting toys out of prams.
3. Barcelona are mmm... beautiful, luscious, mmm... so delicious... And they have Unicef on their shirts, so they're nice too.

Of course, fact number one is still denied by them that think Mourinho's just a kind of footballing George Clooney with a big mouth, no grace, and an ego the size of an errant footballer's 4x4. But there's a bit more to him than that. He's smart - smart enough to have cobbled together a team of Blue Meanies from the disparate millionaires he inherited from Claudio Ranieri.
Jose MourinhoMourinho puts his feet up at the Bridge
And, clearly, he's well-liked by those players. Lampard looked like he was talking to his favourite PE teacher in the tunnel before the game. Jose got into their heads and made the whole thing about him - which is how he sees the world anyway - and Chelsea couldn't get into gear at all.

Of course, they've missed Bosingwa and Cashley - when Ivanovic in particular gets near the opponents' penalty box he looks as confused as a bear in a costume drama - and Michael Essien might have stalked Sneijder with a bit more intent than the puddingy Mikel, who's that rare thing in modern football - a holding midfielder who can't hold on to anything.

Unlike Jose's centre-backs, of course. They were 'rugged'. Which is to say that the WWE are thinking of signing up Walter Samuel after the World Cup. I actually sympathised with Drogba on Tuesday night. Samuel's challenge in the penalty box in the first half had the Ivorian looking like a wildebeest shaking off a lioness - and still the ref did nowt.

Still, he and his team-mates were man enough to concede they were beaten by a better side on the night. Carlo Ancelotti, win or lose a trophy this season, will be offloading a few come July: Ballack, who's lined his nest very successfully whilst being half the player he was; Mikel, an utterly average footballer; Joe Cole, not exactly embraced by Carlo any road and looking less confident with every appearance. Deco, Ferreira, Hilario... actually all remnants of anything Portuguese might help Jose's Giants move out from under his well-tailored coat-tails.

I'm sure Mourinho's hopes are high of lifting the trophy now, that is until he watched Barca destroy Stuttgart. There's summat so goody-two-shoes about the Catalans that I find myself having to resist falling into a dead swoon every time I see them trot out onto the pitch. If you listened to some people, you'd think they were not so much playing the beautiful game as healing the world.

And yet... they were blissful at times on Wednesday night. They have the best conductor going, of course. Lionel Messi is still half a quicksilver step ahead of Rooney as the world's finest player right now. What I like about both of them is they work their socks off and don't spend too much time prowling around like some over-coiffed model on a Dolce and Gabbana billboard. (I speak here of the third footballing great in our midst at present.)
Lionel MessiMessi set the tongues wagging with his performance
Rooney is better in the air than Messi, but when young Lionel runs with the ball, the relationship between the two is positively umbilical. I just reckon he pips Rooney for the ability to create something all by himself.

Barca look better with Henry in the team instead of Ibrahimovic. I don't know anyone who actually rates Ibra. Everyone in our boozer just shrugged when asked if he was up to much, like we were talking about, ooh I dunno, Dave Kitson. Except Dave didn't cost £46m from Inter. (Mourinho brought in Milito and Thiago Motta and his team look way better for it.)

Barca do have a couple of jewels beside Messi. Iniesta floats around like a barn owl in footy kit. I never tire of watching the fella. Then there's Puyol, who's kind of what Gary Neville would be like if he had hair and talent. And Dani Alves - a tad prone to moments of utter dross but generally one of them brilliant Brazilian right-backs, but with more of the matador about him. A sort of Cafu Ole, if you will.

But it is Messi, ball at his feet, running at defenders like a clockwork mouse darting between the legs of narcoleptic cats, who makes Barca what they are at the moment. Here's hoping we get a Wazza-Mezza stand-off at some point in the competition.

In the meantime, a face-off between Inter and Barca might be good telly. Though whether Senor Maradona could watch if Samuel or the equally robust Cambiasso start tracking Twinkletoes about the park is another matter. I'd still tip Messi to come out on top, mind.

It's hard to see past the Catalans as champions but I'll keep me powder dry and tell you who's going to win it after Friday's draw.

Robbo are you looking a job on ITV? Come on man, it was Stuttgart, the Iain Dowie of German footie.

Of course as usual we will have to wait and see what happens. But as I have got every other prediction correct this season I can tell you...

Barca won't get to the final. They'll lose to a lesser team who aren't rated at all. No, not Arsenal.

Inter will only get to the final if they don't draw United before then. Setting up a Fergie v Jose love-in. Fergie wins trophy and hands reigns over to Jose.

Rooney and Messi are different sorts of players so you can't really say who's better. Apart from pistols at dawn of course. Failing that though, Messi's better. The first goal last night made me laugh, just by being so damn good (As did the second actually, but that was the whole perfect team thing they had going on). Also, whilst both he and Rooney often put in a bit of extra effort when things aren't running their way, Rooney seems to have a bit of anger about it whilst Messi just looks like he's trying harder wuth the expectation that he'll do something amazing again any second.

If he went to the English League, I don't think he'd struggle but he wouldn't be scoring 30 goals like he has this season. I think the games moved to a more physique-orientated way, therefore Ronaldo beats Messi hands down.

Can't head - see last season's CL final. Can't track back - why would you want him to? Can't cross - you clearly haven't seen much of the guy this season. But then he doesn't often need to cross, he just cuts inside and creates a mass of panic. I don't think it's possible to overrate Messi. He is too good. Rooney is immense as well though, it's looking like a direct competition between the two of them for 2010 player of the year, and it'll be decided by whoever does better in this seasons CL and WC.

He is clinical from the Penalty spot, and is starting to get it ominously right from his freekicks, - which is all the more remarkable considering how easy to get it wrong it is, employing his technique.

This has to be a WUM, right? Even you Gaz are not that blind! Did you watch any of Barce last year or this year? I only need to point to the previous game to make the point - did you see his hat-trick?

Messi is quite easy to keep out of the game, but you can say that about most players. You just close them down, and man mark them. What Barca have are alternative threats, from Iniesta and Xavi in particular.

The only defence is to keep the ball away from them, and close them down instantly when they have it to give them no time to settle into their metronomic short passing game.

It was working for us before we conceded the bad goal, last final. But you have to actually have the threat yourself (and benefit from decisions when players are fouled). Once you concede they just keep the ball and pull you around the pitch chasing shadows.

Anyway, back to Messi, they're not really very similar except in their importance. Rooney is more of a forward, while Messi is more of a link man. Kind of like comparing Fabregas and Vieira.

As for better, I still think Rooney has more to his game (more goals, better in the air), but Messi probably has the greater creativity and outright skill.

Can't head the ball without even talking about the goal he scored against Man U, how about the header that was saved yesterday looked a pretty good header for a short guy to me. For all the talk of the English league being the toughtest league in the world a couple of things to chew on. Henry scored more goals in England than Spain or Italy (goals per game ratio before you all mention where he was longer), as someone pointed out Ronaldo is not scoring as much in Spain, and Torres scores more in England than he did in Spain on a defensive liverpool team playing on his own most games (goals per game ratio again). Messi is a once in a generation player Rooney might be the best English player of his generation, but Messi a class above and thats no disrespect to Rooney.

Don't mean to be rude here pal - (honestly) but isn't that just stating the obvious. Rooney is more of a forward because he is a forward/ striker. Messi is more of the link man because he is a midfielder. As we witnessed last night Messi was given almost a free role, playing at different times of the night - (obviously, even he can't be intwo places at once) on the right in the centre and on the left.

I think you'll also find that Rooney is scoring at a faster rate for united than Ronaldo did.

No idea how you can put "Carvahlo" over Ferdinand though. He's alright, but i'd rather have Lucio, maybe over either on current form, and arguably Samuel over Cannavaro.

So basically, I agree with Maicon!

Funny that no mention of Kaka these days. I'd think him and Torres would be close running with Iniesta and Drogba. I'd rather have the former two myself.

At least both Messi and Rooney are in the 1/4 finals now, Real Madrid did not fail against another big team simply a good one.

Let's make it clear, Rooney is the very best all out striker at the moment. The comment about Messi no being as good a header of the ball as Rooney is very short sighted.
Rooney has only recently succesfully added the header to his range, this was not the case until the beginning of the season. For reminder Messi did score a header in May last year around such dwarfs as Ferdinand, Vidic and Van der Sar.
Messi versatality makes him a superior player to a Rooney or Ronaldo.
Messi could as well make it in any team as right wing, left wing, center forward or No10. He scored 2 last night and created one (on the second ,the awareness to wrong foot the keeper while keeping the head down shows rare vision).
He has a very unique ability to beat one or more players with a regularity and ease not matched by Rooney or Ronaldo.
He does not do tricks for the sake of the photographs (aka the Ronaldo step over that brings nothing to the game) but because it allows him to eliminate players and create something.
He scores almost as much as he creates (whereas Ronaldo and Rooney have a team to work for them............ that does not negate the fact that you need serious talent to put it behind the line) and from everywhere in the park: last year he scored an amazing number of goals zizaging thru the box at short range, scores from outside the box , free kicks and one on one.
Especially last year, he amazed me with his awareness at short range: does not look to hammer the ball in the net but identifies gaps that allows him to glide the ball out of reach of the keeper.

Let's all bow down to your superior knowledge. Or not. United's squad on paper is obviously weaker. Simple reality is that the team is no longer twisted to cover his lack of work ethic, but putting a world class player on the left so Ronaldo can bound about failing to get justified free kicks.

Park, Rooney, Nani and Berbatov have all played better this season, because the United shape is back. It is disheartening to be carrying a player and running your socks off while someone else lopes about.

Ronaldo is a phenominal talent, but the team is stronger without him because the rest of the team play better without him. Had he been upfront with Rooney along side him, then it might have been different, but we didn't give that a go, and Ronaldo was only developing into a proper forward at the latter end of the season.

In short, do one you arrogant get.

And we may do again without him. Certainly can't argue with the way the team are playing.

Its rarely good for a TEAM if there is one player who thinks he's bigger than the rest, or is that much better than the others. It makes the team lopsided and overreliant.

That was the brand given to United when we had Ronaldo, because he became the focus. It completely missed the point that the team was structured to support him. With him gone, the team has hardly struggled. Now we're overreliant on a different one of the top 4 players in the world. Difference is that everyone else is able to contribute more.

United with Ronaldo reminded me of United with Beckham (and England with Beckham as a first teamer): cut the supply to that one player and the team has forgotten how to play. That is what Barca do better than most, because the other's don't forget to play their part.

I fully believe that United this season would beat United of last season. Simply because the shape is better.

The difference between Barcelona and Man Utd is that if you take Messi out of the team they are still top class. Utd without Rooney would struggle in my view.

    This is TRUE

And most of all, to an extend like Rooney: he does not dive EVER, and does not look for the free-kick and penalty (had a Ronaldhino have such attitude, with such talent he would have buried Man-U at the San Siro in the first 20 minutes instead of unsecessfully aiming for free-kick/penalty that were never blown anyway). I remember last year final when it took 3 Man u player to bring him down 10 metres from the box and be up and running before the ref had time to whistle the fault: most players would still be rolling in pain today. For those that believe he could not meet the physical challenge of the PL, please rewatch last season Barca-Real where the dirty white agressively attacked his ankles for the first 20 minutes (then never managed to get hold of him afterwards)

Verdict: Messi is from another planet and an absolute joy to watch (by the way I am not a Barca supporter, if I want to watch the Beautiful game, there are no other team that compare at the moment, just like ManU Ronaldo's 42 goal season) . In a dream world I would certainly pair him with Rooney: team players first and foremost (I know where Rooney would be situated, not sure about Messi). Ronaldo for all his talents feels like he is a source of distraction more than he brings to the team (after all, Man U does not miss him so much this season).

    THIS IS UTTER RUBBISH-

Both Rooney & Ronaldo are far more versatile than Messi who doesn't defend well and hasn't got the strength & power of Rooney or Ronaldo. As for shooting Ronaldo's 40 yarder in Porto last season is better than anything Messi has done.

As for Messi never dives - pull the other one he could teach Tom daley a few tricks could Messi. Rooney & Ronaldo used to craete lots of goals for each other and Cristiano easily skinned defenders for the last 3 seasons in Europe. If Anderson & Carrick had actually played well in last seasons CL final Messi wouldn't have got a toch as he depends heavily on Xavi & Iniesta to win and distribute possession and then for Inbrahmovich (last season Eto'o) to create space to run into whereas Rooney & Ronaldo create that space themselves.

Both of them are more complete players than Messi (who struggled to make any kind of impact in Argentina's qualifying campaign)and Rooney will prove that when United win the Champions League & Premier League and we'll see who wins the England vs Portugal World Cup Final. Argies will go out in 2nd stage to France (that's if they don't go out by drawing all 3 games in their group)

Do you watch Messi at all?

In response to a number of your points:

    1. "Messi doesnt defend well". I would easily put him on a par with Ronaldo in terms of defence. More importantly, its not really his job to defend. He is basically a creative forward.

    2. "Ronaldos 40 yarder against Porto was better than anything Messi did"
Look up the best of Messi's goals. Some of them are easily better than a long ranger. By this rationale Maynar Figeroa is also better than Messi (and Ronaldo).

    3. "Messi struggled with Argentina"
Yes in a ridiculous set up with a questionable coach and tactics. Ronaldo isnt even going to the World Cup though.

4."Diving" - Yes they all do it.

Finally - top teams with top managers play to their strengths. Barcelona has evolved to play a certain way that exploits the best of their abilities and Messi has a specific role to fulfill in this team. Just because he is given greater license to roam and stay forward for example doesnt mean he cant defend or track back if needed. Similar with Rooney at Utd. Rooney is more important to Utd than Messi is to Barcelona because Barcelona have many elite players such as Xavi and Iniesta capable of supplying creativity. Man Utd would be seriously weakened without Rooney. In Messi's defence, he is coming off the back of a season in which he has won every club trophy hes competed in. Hes won the Champions League twice already. Rooney has only been comparable to Messi in this year in terms of form.

I constantly hear this criticism of Barcelona that they are useless in the air, cant tackle and are physically weak - it really doesnt matter when you hold 70+% of possession and are top quality at what you do! Ronaldo has also scored a lot of goals dribbling and shooting but taht 40-yarder stands out the same way Beckham's goals against Wimbledon & Greece, Owens goal against argentina in 98 and Giggs FA-Cup 99 goal against Arsenal stand out as iconic goals taht everyone remembers and Messi doesn't really have any of those

That can be said to some degree but remember than Rooney often played out fo position to strengthen the left flank defensively (not something you could trust Messi to do)and he has a lot more power than Messi. Also in terms of iconic goals for him remember that Volley in the FA Cup against Newcastle a few years back it was absolutely outstanding and he can dominate games now to a greater extent than Messi does. If Xavi & iniesta have an off day Messi hides ehereas Rooney shows more leadership and gets everyone stepping up a gear and that is why I think he is better

At least both Messi and Rooney are in the 1/4 finals now, Real Madrid did not fail against another big team simply a good one.

** Real Madrid are building a new team. I'm sure they'll do better next year. **

** Rooney has started to score with headers because hes getting head high crosses in, most notably from Valencia. To be honest I've scored a few headers before, does that mean I'm amazin at heading the ball? No. **

** Gonna have to disagree again. One of the main differences between Messi and Ronaldo is Messi's lack of versatility. Messi could never be effective in the middle of midfield and if anyone thinks different they're an idiot. **

** I agree with you here but so what? Barca go through Messi all the time so its hardly surprising he gets a good number of assists. **

For those that believe he could not meet the physical challenge of the PL, please rewatch last season Barca-Real where the dirty white agressively attacked his ankles for the first 20 minutes (then never managed to get hold of him afterwards)

** Could he take it for a whole season? Don't think so.**

Verdict: Messi is from another planet and an absolute joy to watch (by the way I am not a Barca supporter, if I want to watch the Beautiful game, there are no other team that compare at the moment, just like ManU Ronaldo's 42 goal season).

    ** You can't compare Messi's season with Ronaldo's 42 season. No contest. **

Ronaldo for all his talents feels like he is a source of distraction more than he brings to the team (after all, Man U does not miss him so much this season).

** You do make so decent points but I definitely get a whiff of disdain for Ronaldo which I think is the main problem here in this blog. I'm still certain that the next great player to be in the hall of fame (the last one being Zidane) will be Ronaldo. George Best summed it up perfectly when he said "its the first time its a compliment to me when people compare Ronaldo to me". **

Your getting into apples and oranges if you start bring things like playing on the left flank etc into it. Rooney would make a better centre back than Messi aswell if thats the case.

You seriously need to look up some of Messis goals if you think Ronaldos long ranger was better than anything Messi has done.

I think its obviously quite close on who is "the best" out of Ronaldo, Messi and Rooney. Invariably the edge will probably go to the team that does best in the CL.

My main issue is with the criteria used to judge. Heading the ball and tracking back are simply not relevant to judge Messi on because he isnt required to do it regularly so its hard to even know how good he is at it. Tracking back especially is just something that requires minimal skill. Messi is clearly not asked to do it as much as Rooney is mainly because Barcelona have so much of the ball to begin with.

Btw Messi has been relatively ineffective for Argentina (compared to Barca) who had a real struggle to qualify and they arguably have a stronger squad than Portugal with an easier qualification path (again arguably).Barca certainly set the team up for Messi every bit as much as United did for Rooney and Ronaldo before. Its what the best teams do to maximise their best players.

I dont really agree with this. Ronaldinho was Barcelonas chief playmaker for much of Messis career at Barcelona. They also depend alot on Xavi and Iniesta who are vastly superior to their Man Utd equivalents. Barcelona are just currently a better team with better players. This isnt anything against Utd but I just think after losing Ronaldo they had to make some significant adjustments and Rooney is absolutely central to that.

Barcelona on the other hand developed more naturally. No doubt Messi is key but I aslo think Xavi and Iniesta are hugely important. They didnt reshuffle their tactics to any great effect to accomodate Messi - he just slotted into the team and the tactics very naturally. As I say, if Barcelona lose Messi its a blow but I think they are still capable of winning the double without him. If Man Utd lost Rooney they would be seriously crippled.

Its hard to compare them this season

Last season rooney was played in a similar role to messi where they are the outside striker and have to cut in or create something in this role rooney wasn't in the same league. messi is techniquely a better player he can do things with the ball rooney cant dream and tbh I feel this is why it was more about messi and ronaldo last year because they were both playing in the roles that suited them

BUT this season rooney is playing as the out and out striker the focal point of the team the one who has to get the ball and score. he has started to learn where to run, the timing of his runs (something that i feel has come from the arrival of owen) and his headers. Also like i said he is the focal point before the ball could go to a number of players ronaldo berbatov tevez or rooney and it was shared around. This season with valencia being brought the play is focused on the ball ending up with rooney and him doin the job. This is the job messi couldnt do. Ithink he can score headers but its the placement of himself i think messi struggles with he knows how to take the ball but not necesarily where to go when the balls put in the box

so I would argue there are 2 different groups out and out strikers and the attackers

so my five Out and out strikers would be:

    1.Rooney
    2.Torres (on his day)
    3. Eto
    4.Tevez
    5. Owen(if he stayed fit and sharp)

    Attackers
    1.Messi

The problem is our key player in getting that support working is Fletcher, since Hargreaves has been laid low. You can play all the pretty football you like but without a finisher up top and a worker in midfield that links everyone up your never going to achieve much. We have rotated our creative players regularly but our big performances always have Fletcher in the team. He was absent in our last 3 defeats by Liverpool.

Also we have struggled this season most because our first choice defence has been stuffed for most of it. Its only now Vidic and Rio are teaming up you will start to see us pick up.

Barca you will find set themselves up similarly around Messi's strengths - they may play prettier football in his absence than we would without Rooney but without someone to finish the move off or to act as a focal point to their play, the football is ultimately ineffective. Arsenal rely on Van Persie to provide this and have started to be more effective with Bendtner providing the focal point.

Puyol times a tackle well, but that aside his defending is plain woeful. In any side which bothered to pay attention to its defending his movement and positional sense would see him struggle to make the match day squad. Alves is somehow even worse at the back, and is generally pretty poor going forward as well. Once in a blue moon he pulls a 30 yarder or a perfect cross out of the bag to grab the headlines, but that is really it.

The only reason Barca don't concede that many is because in most games their opponents don't even get a sniff at the ball. Any team which does manage to get at their back line will have a field day.

Messi is streets ahead of Wayne Rooney, rooney has alot more help with his goals, so many have been put on a plate by the likes of valencia. We dont even know if Rooney can sustain his form, and hes and out and out centre forward. I actually heard someone say rooney scores more goals, hahahaha, he has about 3 more goals than messi this season, last year messi outscored him by a distance, ronaldo too. He can head the ball better i hear, maybe so, but as messi has demonstrated he knows how to head a ball too, thing is barca like to keep the ball on the deck so you wont see them score an awful lot of headers anywhere in their team

Not only does lionel messi almost have an equally good goals to games ratio this season, he creates more.

If anyone seriously thinks rooney or ronaldo are better players they're deluded and are trying to kid themselves because:

    a) rooney is english
    B) ronaldo played in the EPL for Man Utd

Hello all, I may be the last one to post on the blog. Bugged with loads of work recently.

    Nice blog Robbo!
Messi is the greatest player currently and Rooney is the best in-form player at the moment.

However, I want to point out two things from Inter and Barca games.

    1) Mourinho's tactics were spot on. He actually played Eto'o on the right midfield for three-quarters of the match, only until when Zhirkov got subbed he asked Eto'o to play upfront. And then what happened they say is history...

    2) Thierry looks a pale shadow of himself. Spit/Star and I discussed this on previous blog during the game. He had 3 decent chances to score, which he couldnt. A younger Henry who played at Arsenal definetely would have scored. So, me being a Henry fan.. I think Ibra is better forward these days than TH14.

    Catching up with comments, Cheers!

Maybe I'm wrong but I suspect you are biased because he plays for Barca or maybe you just hate the EPL but I believe you are wrong. The real test will be how they both do in the world cup and possibly in the Champions League (making it harder for Ronaldo to stake a claim). When United beat Barca two seasons ago Messi was marginalised by keeping him away from the penalty box so his skills were kept away from the danger area and Ronaldo was denied 3 clear cut penalties over both legs. Rooney through his strength and appetite for hard work will I suggest not be similarly marginalised.

Last season we lost the battle in midfield so there was no argument for comparison as our lack of possession prevented either Rooney or Ronaldo having an impact.

Obviously you have your opinion but I believe the Champions League and World Cup will show who are the better players. Anyway I look forward to seeing how both cope with the approach of the sharp end of the season.

I agree with most that Messi and Rooney are probably the finest two footballers playing in Europe at the moment, which is to take nothing away from Ronaldo, Iniesta, Xavi and Fabregas, in no particular order. And I certainly cannot see why Ibrahimovic is so highly rated by some. When has he ever produced anything on a major stage?
I certainly think it's too early to be raving about Barcelona. Was their defeat of Stuttgart any more impressive than Arsenal's victory over Porto or Man Utd's defeat of Milan? And have they not been displaced at the top of La Liga by Real Madrid? Now there's a bunch of serial over-spenders and under-achievers if ever there was. Why do think that simply buying up the best individuals from around the world will make them a good team? Football is a TEAM game.
Anyway, that's my first rant over and done with. Who knows, as someone with no particular axe to grind for any one team (except for the mighty Cobblers!) I may feel compelled to contribute again sometime.
