Man City lacking a 'Special One'

Post categories:

Robbo Robson | 14:07 UK time, Thursday, 25 February 2010

I saw clips of Cheryl Cole returning to our shores at some airport or other with a clutch of photographers crashing and flashing away around her like the dark cloud that used to hang over the 'gruesome twosome' in the Wacky Races.

Poor lass, thought I, and considered offering a broad Teesside shoulder and a box of mansize tissues.

I doubt Mrs. C will get much peace. Tattoos, eh. I've not seen one that doesn't look like a mistake. Apparently, Ashley's friends say Cheryl's Mum moving in hasn't helped. And that's about the only time I've ever agreed with the bloke.

Nowt kills the passion in a relationship more than knowing your lass's Mam's in the next room watching Emmerdale.

What they need is someone to push them off the back pages, if not the front. Which brings us to Jose Mourinho.

He's a curious cove, isn't he? As with most strong characters he's a sort of love-him-or-hate-him type -like Michael Winner.

Mourinho's slightly different in that I both love and hate him. Even the pub telly's widescreen isn't big enough to encompass the man's ego.

I swear he's as camera-aware as Marilyn Monroe in her pomp. That motionless response to Milito's opener, save for some pursing of the lips, was typical. He's a ham of the old school.

And he's started doing that weird thing that blinkered sportspeople do of talking about himself in the third person - "Mourinho does not lose at Stamford Bridge", he said.

Still, the man knows how to manage. He's got the least Italian team in Serie A history and they are a proper Jose team: unfussy, workmanlike, with enough skill in there to make the most of the chances that come their way. His brilliance at Chelsea was to shape a bunch of apparently mercenary millionaires into a side that worked for each other.

Critics damn him by saying anyone could've won the title with that amount of money behind them, and, yes, even Avram Grant got them to a Champs League final, but you only have to look up to the blue half of Manchester to see how tricky these things can be.

I wonder whether the Fand-Abu-Dhabi-Dozies wanted to get Mourinho in the first place but googled the wrong bloke. What they've ended up with is something which on the surface is very similar. Mancini had the luxuriant salt-and-pepper hairdo, a kind of brooding only-George-Clooney-could-play-me-in-the-film-of-my-life presence on the touchline, and a team with pretty dour intentions. However, that's where the comparison ends.

Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini
Roberto Mancini is under pressure following the FA Cup defeat to Stoke

The lads pulling on the sky blue shirts look devoid of threat, save for the perennially troubled Bellamy. At least when Sparky was in charge they were losing games 4-3. I'm shocked by how negatively set up City are.

As a player, the manager was one of them classic Italian playmakers: neat, innovative, lightweight and prone to vanish from games at moments when they were most needed. I'm thinking del Piero or Totti, or the only duck-shooting Buddhist in the world, Roberto Baggio, until the 1994 World Cup reinvented him (penalty miss aside).

But at least Mancini was unpredictable and forward-looking. His team barely look sideways. It's as if the midfield is a series of cloned Ray Wilkinses.

The lads that have left good homes for richer pastures - Barry, Lescott, Toure - seem to be playing like there's too much weight in their pockets and Adebayor looked like Mancini had put him in solitary. Even Everton have played two upfront a bit this season. No wonder a stray hand got Adebayor into bother.

Worse still, Mancini seems to have even less tactical inspiration from off the bench than a previous occupant of the hotseat, dear old Sven.
Manchester City fans have always deserved our sympathy. Their club has flailed around for a long time in the shadow of the red half, like some irritating younger brother desperate for attention.

The transparent policy of parachuting Mancini in for a handful of cosy fixtures has not worked. The first sign of hardship and his players have crumbled like the last digestives in the packet. Of course, it doesn't help that Stoke City have shown them up. Here's a team that does all the things that the current City team can't.

Pulis has hard workers, a gameplan, a bench with something different on it, and the face of a pityless PE teacher. Oh and Rory Delap.

I have a theory about them throw-ins. Keepers get foxed 'cos the trajectory of the ball is different to a free-kick. I reckon it dips sooner than your defenders are expecting, and the likes of Shawcross and Fuller know this.

It's becoming as mysterious as the Shane Warne flipper now and the only answer is to invest in a bowling machine that can propel a football in the same way as the mighty Delapidator. Stoke would've beaten City without Delap last night, mind.
Mancini is finding that wealth doesn't create an instant team.

City need a Mourinho.

Do you reckon they typed "cool looking manager" into Google Images and got Mancini as he had a better search optimisation company.

However if they had typed "tactically aware good manager who gets the most out of his players" they would have got this

And more Maths, Man United have 10 games to make up 4 points on Chelsea, with a bit of luck it will be 4 in a row!

Yes, you have a point Robbo, but don't take it too far. Eto'o and Balotelli can be very fussy. But to Mourinho's credit, Eto'o has behaved himself.

More about the home grown rules:

"The next best equipped currently, and arguably the best equipped for the future, is Arsenal. Whilst a quick look at the current squad will point out only three English players, Theo Walcott, Jack Wilshere and Kieran Gibbs, they will all surely play a great role in Arsenal's future. The fact Arsenal also have the current youth FA cup and youth championship winning squad also points to a bright future with this ruling. The general age of the squad is also impressive, regularly averaging less than 23 for outfield players with many like Bendtner, Song, Djourou, Ramsey, Denilson, Fabregas etc… all likely to classify as home-grown. Overall this means that Arsenal are one of the few top clubs that won't have to worry about getting rid of any players due to the fact that so much of their squad won't even need to be counted within the twenty-five.".... I am scratching my head trying to work out how these "Home Grown" rules are going to change anything.

BBQ RULES We in england will shortly to enter the BBQ season.

Therefore it is important to refresh your memory on the etiquette of this sublime outdoor cooking activity. When a man volunteers to do the BBQ the following chain of events are put into motion:
    Routine...
    (1) The woman buys the food.
    (2) The woman makes the salad, prepares the vegetables, and makes dessert ..
    (3) The woman prepares the meat for cooking, places it on a tray along with the necessary cooking utensils and sauces, and takes it to the man who is lounging beside the grill - beer in hand.
    (4) The woman remains outside the compulsory three meter exclusion zone where the exuberance and other manly bonding activities can take place without the interference of the woman.

    Here comes the important part:
    (5) THE MAN PLACES THE MEAT ON THE GRILL.
    More routine...
    (6) The woman goes inside to organize the plates and cutlery.
    (7) The woman comes out to tell the man that the meat is looking great. He thanks her and asks if she will bring another beer while he flips the meat
    Important again:
    (8) THE MAN TAKES THE MEAT OFF THE GRILL AND HANDS IT TO THE WOMAN.
    More routine...
    (9) The woman prepares the plates, salad, bread, utensils, napkins, sauces, and brings them to the table.
    (10) After eating, the woman clears the table and does the dishes.

    And most important of all:
    (11) Everyone PRAISES the MAN and THANKS HIM for his cooking efforts.
    (12) The man asks the woman how she enjoyed ' her night off ', and, upon seeing her annoyed reaction, concludes that there's just no pleasing some women

PS: The team playing Everton has scored so its no longer carp but has become a tenchy affair.

City have had more managers than most PL clubs and have had almost as many owners.
The latest obscenely rich owners believe that they can buy the Championship, and maybe in time they will in time, however their stratgey is seriously flawed if they believe that this can be achieved by money alone.
The management team is not the dream ticket.
They are not footballing people and unless they really understand the busisness they're in they are never going to be able to make correct decisions.
The trail of football club ownership by speculators who think owning an EPL Club is the gravy train has proven to be flawed.
City need to take a leaf out of Randy Lerner's book which is very simple appoint a great manager, support him 100% and let him get on with the job of building a successful team.
A major problem City have is having people like Gary Cook who, as Chief Executive, has developed an unfortunate reputation as a serious embarrassment and clueless in this position.
One of his most recent gaffes preceeded the second leg of the CC semi-final against United when he was filmed telling supporters in a New York bar that City would get to Wembley "not if, but when, we beat United again".
Winning is serious business and City need to be alive to the fact that they need serious football men at the helm.
So give Mancini a chance. Let him shape the team in the way he wants them to play and clarify Brian Marwood's role more clearly who seems to be the éminence grise at the moment i.e. he is effectively Manchester City's director of football, including the academy and player development.

The fan was restrained by stewards. Bellamy then walked up to him and punched him in the face.

Anyway, regardless of who went towards whom, if you attack someone, in law you get punished. Cantona got a very severe punishment and Bellamy didn't even get a three match violent conduct ban. He got away scot-free.

Look what Adebayor got sent off for on Wednesday. He shrugged someone off and got a red card (and presumably a three match ban). Bellamy walked up to a fan who had invaded the pitch, who was restrained by stewards, and punched him. For some reason I can't quite fathom, Adebayor's discretion seems to be deemed far worse by the F.A.

I don't use the term lightly but it was a scandal that he didn't receive any kind of punishment. Put it this way, if you or I do exactly what Bellamy did, say for example in a bar on Saturday night, we'd be arrested and charged (and rightly so).

So far it originated out west on cattle drives, in Carolina, in Georgia, in the West Indies, in France. Nowhere does it mention Australia mate. I would lean towards it having American origins... Bar-B-Q reminds me of a cattle brand, maybe some rancher had that as his brand name and while having beef on a spit, the brand was to the forefront and someone suggested they were eating a Bar-B-Q cow, and hence the name stuck.

In fact Mourinho's policy seemed to be to look at the players Utd, Arsenal and Liverpool were interested in and then to out bid them.

City, on the other hand, have struggled to attract top players because of their lack of status and a place in the CL. It will take longer but money always talks in the end. Right now though I'd bet Mourinho would flounder at City.

Chip off shoulder please. Who said anything relating to that? It was in reply to someone saying Mourinho looked up our transfer targets, but it was clearly the Chief Exec who left us for Chelsea.

And who ever claimed we only get in local talents? Seriously, back in your box mate and stop being a Wum.

Bo (434) i think the squad, like all good squads, has a mix of youth and experience. There have been some injuries to players who otherwise wouldnt' need replacing yet, but that's already in hand. Whoever comes in just needs to carry on the staggered (staggering maybe?) process of replacing the older ones.

Back to some football news & my views,
    1) Pompey in administration is sad. Relegation is an assurity now. They just have to play for pride.

Do they not teach you to read in "the south" then? It wasn't a criticism at all, merely a clarification of a point. The players were there to be bought, just irritating that our plans were outed and overtaken by a spendhappy rival. Otherwise we'd have had both Robben and Essien (clearly indicative of us buying players other than local lads).

Bo, I think there's more of a chance with Cole. We've always wanted him, but it would be a surprise. But these transfers are more common these days (Tevez, Adebayor, A(rse)(nal) H(C)ole, Sol Campbell to name just a couple).

In my dreams we get both, and Torres.

Other than that, we have Chelsea to thank for taking Veron off our hands (I feel it was a shame, because he was quality, but he didn't fit the team with Keane in it).

Listen mate, there was no point at which I complained about other teams getting money. You're just assuming that because i'm a United fan. As long as we have good players, i'm happy for other teams to afford them too.

No you're right, Tevez moved to City because he wanted to play at a higher level...

Everyone (with any sense) works for money, but your view on a job offer will depend on the money offered and the job itself.

So, when you take a step down in club level because you are offered a much larger wage, its reasonable to call them a mercinary (driven by money only). Most of the others came to United for the improvement in the level at which they played.

The only one of the list you could argue was Veron, but he was from Lazio who were going bankrupt, and its reasonable to argue United are a bigger team than Lazio anyway.

    Anything else?

And Bo, yes of course United do it. God knows, if we could we'd probably skin most of the clubs, but we don't have the philosophy (or political and financial power) of Real.

Taking these two specific players, they weren't "nicked" but initial agreements were already in place for them to come to United, especially for Robben. But a big checkbook can win you many friends and overcome many club allegiences. It's worked in our favour (see Rooney), but its funny how sly bids by clubs are generally only beaten by big spending clubs.

Money overcomes slow courtship. Courtship is the cheaper option, but its always vulnerable to someone coming in with more money.

And we gathered the money by playing at a higher level. We earned the money that came our way, by a particular successful generation of young players brought through, with a couple of specific additions. To maintain our position however, it is necessary to buy better and better players and (where possible) young talents.

Also, I did say that we pay bigger wages than most clubs, but not compared to the likes of City, Chelsea, Real and Inter.

As far as Arsenal, they desperately need to spend, but then, without spending their still doing a better job than big spending Liverpool.

Again, you're twisting the argument like a good Wum. Which was merely that you misunderstood my clarification that Chelsea bought our transfer target list via the Chief Exec, rather than just Mourinho.
