Jermain Deffo

Harry Redknapp says Jermain Defoe is the best finisher in England. Put a jam roly poly and custard in front of yours truly and I'll prove him wrong.

Nevertheless five goals in one game is impressive stuff. There are times when Defoe looks right up there with the best.

His movement is brilliant, he's got that sheer greed you need as a striker (you can just see him in the school playground hanging around the opposition keeper and taking the glory for the tap-ins) and he's got a bit of pace to boot.

Sometimes he could do with picking his spot rather than just wellying it, but it's hard to argue with Redknapp right now. He was clinical enough against Chris Kirkland who's probably having counselling this morning.

The poor lad was left so exposed it's quite likely he's being treated for hypothermia 'n'all. If he can stop himself from sticking his studs in a prone defender's shin there'd be no problem with him.

Defoe takes home an added extra from his weekend's work

As it is, unless Eriksson calls up Cap about some schoolboy with no first team experience who he's found delivering evening papers in Nottingham, I think Defoe can book his tickets to Jo'burg right away.

Mind it's hard to judge when a defence is this generous. It wasn't so much Christmas for Defoe and co as the Elves' Christmas Party and they'd left the grotto keys in the door. Every time they got the ball the defenders dropped it back at the feet of a Spur like a bunch of tireless retrievers.

Titus Bramble returned to the form we know and love him for - at one point Defoe turned him like a rusty kid's roundabout in a park - and Edman gave Insua a run for his money as the League's limpest full-back.

Even Bentley got a chance to do his Lazy Becks impression. If I was a Latics fan I'd be calling for the stocks to be re-introduced into the town centre.

The shock of it was only surpassed when they went back to the MotD2 studio to hear the opinions of Lee Dixon and some bloke from a Bee Gees tribute band masquerading as a professional footballer. Robbie Savage, he called himself.

Thanks to Spurs then for giving us an extraordinary scoreline, cos all too many of the other fixtures confirmed what we already know.

Chelsea have more depth than your average Pacific trench. Blue posters on this messageboard have been talking up the lad Kakuta and after his half-hour on Saturday you'd have to say whoever it was who decided to contact Lens had his glasses on. I think Chelsea'll walk it this season.

Darren Fletcher continues to be the most improved footballer in the division. Here's a lad who used to get called in for ankle-tapping duties when Scholes had gone ginger ninja once too often.

He's never lacked an engine but now he's learnt to pass and score as well as do the sort of things that make Monsieur Wenger all uppity. In fact he wouldn't have a care in the world if it wasn't for the fact that he has to pull on a Scotland jersey once in a while.

The recruitment drive for Burley's replacement isn't looking terribly encouraging either. It's like one of them army line-ups when the NCO asked for a volunteer and all but one of them take a step backwards. Given that Levein hasn't ruled himself out, I expect he'll be the next holder of the poisoned chalice.

Arsenal have finally lost in a way that most of us think they will: outmuscled but not outclassed. Benitez is insistent his team will be top four this season. He's wrong. Top six will be a result.

His squad resembles an Adult Education class in First Aid at the moment and even Steven couldn't prise a win from the strangely defensive Man City. They've had more draws than a lingerie salesman and you can't help thinking that 200 million quid ought to buy a bit more than a bunch of cagey cash-rich counter-attackers.

Sparky will be under pressure very soon. He's getting frustrated that his team keeps throwing away odd-goal leads and that they should be able 'to see the game out'. How about 'score another and it's game over'?

zola595getty.jpg
Zola's side have one win from their last 13 league games

Benitez suffered a similarly negative mindset last year and it cost Liverpool the title. City are a long way off being owt much yet.

West Ham continue to be the worst protectors of a two-goal lead in the history of football. Zola's team were undone by a spooky deflection and a penalty award that couldn't have been softer had it been lined by the pelt of a sea otter.

I mean if all we have to do is back into the defender, feign a jump and fall on our faces we could get 10 penalties a match. Not surprisingly the Hull pickpocket was called Fagin, even if it was the Artful Dodger Bullard - a kind of footballing Tuffers - who tucked home the pen.

Paul Hart's post-match Eeyore impersonation is becoming the feature of the season. As far as I can tell from Hart's comments, Pompey have been brilliant but unlucky all season.

Soon, he'll be getting almost Churchillian - 'Never has so much been given, by so few, for so little.' Seven points from 13 games? That's not unlucky, that's positively cursed.

Burnley can consider themselves unlucky to draw courtesy of football's equivalent of a yeti sighting, an Emile Heskey goal, and Bolton continue to ply their charmless trade in the lower reaches.

I've got nowt against the Trotters, I just feel that they've well outstayed their welcome in the top flight now.

As for Bolton I think they will go down with Mick the Merciless and Eeyore (unless Tigger takes over and they bounce right oin up out of there)and then West Ham will drop in as if they and City draw any more they'll turn into a box of pencils

from other blog, since i didn't get to answer you there H2H, Foster has done pretty well so far for England, so no reason to drop him. Who knows why SAF doesn't trust him. Maybe, as i suggested before, its not about trust, it's about one of the best keepers in the world still being a bit more consistent. Except we are. We criticised Ngog for his dive and are perfectly entitled to criticise Henry for his handball x2. Roy Keane is a disgrace to the game of football and his country and i can't wait to see him fired from his job at Ipswich. It's a decent club and deserves a lot better than him.

Firstly Robbo, nice one sir, many chuckle worthy moments in this offering. Thank God for the PL, the Internationat break was gettingb tedious, and all the Henry jokes had just about been exhausted. Although no one mentioned that RvP might be able to move faster after his new age treatment, something about added horse power under the bonnet.

Re 53 GR, Thanx for the cross blog reply, I personally thought that Foster was a bit of a liability when he played for Utd, but maybe you've seen more of him then me, I just don't think he should be in FC's squad.
But I do agree that Defoe would best be used as an impact sub.
Finally for those yet again calling for Defoe to replace Heskey, you haven't been paying attention and obviously don't understand how FC wants his England team to play.

I feel every bit of sympathy towards Ireland as they have indeed been cheated out of a place in the World Cup.....but it really annoys me that people are banging on at Henry about it!! it would take a very special and a very honest person to hold their hands up and admit to handballing it when that goal will put you into the World Cup!!!

Deep in your hearts you know, that if you were in that situation, you had just handballed it and the goal would put you into the world cup, referee hasn't seen it so he's allowed the goal to stand, that you WOULD NOT TURN TO THE REF AND ASK THE GOAL BE DISALLOWED!!

Any of you who disagree with me......well thats up to you but that unfortunatly is the game of Football. We would be the same if it were someone who dived to win a penalty.....or if someone were Sent Off for standing on someones genitals (such as Rooney in 2006, a definate red card, regardless of ronaldos wink)

Tottenham tend historically to have an utterly pants start to the season. Even the years that Martin Jol took us to consecutive 5th spots werent as productive as this year has been so far. The fact of the matter is that in the time that Harry has been at the Lane, only 4 other teams have collected more points that Tottenham, and the gap is closing in the case of a certain bunch of misfiring reds...

Top six will be a result? Funny how, know-nothing pundits make outrageous predictions few 13 games into a season. And I don't think "Chelsea'll walk it this season". Manchester United will give them a fight for it, and so will Arsenal, no doubt. And doesn't Tottenham start off like this every season, and every season they end the same?

    _________________________________________________________________________

Actually I predicted Chelsea to win the title, United 2nd and Spurs to be top four. To be fair I also said Arsenal wouldn't make the top four and Liverpool would but then I wasn't expecting the Torres tweak every other week or that Gerrard would be having pain-killing injections so they could get him on the pitch. I imagine there's a lot of Koppites who wouldn't mind having something to kill the pain right now. I speak as a Boro fan, so I know what pain is.

Ahem. Good point. How stupid do I look?

Nevertheless we're not going to find out whether Defoe can score against the big teams until he plays against them, and Bent, Agbonlahor and Heskey are much more unlikely goalscorers so where else do we look? AS it is I'm sure Capello will be looking to use Defoe off the bench, with Heskey starting. After Sunday, you'd have to say that as a second half sub he could make a big difference.

Rooney, Crouch, C. Cole, Heskey, Defoe are the most likely five for WC duty.

If Defoe maintains his scoring form for the season, he will start ahead of Heskey. If Owen bags 10 goals in 20 games, he will be there as an impact sub.

If he is taking Walcott Beckham and Lennon then all we need is Hargreaves, Lampard, Barry & Gerrard for centre positions and Joe Cole & Downing for the left.

Gerrard will start on the left anyway, Beckhma can also play in the middle so we would easily have enough cover

Add to that 3 keepers and 6 defenders and he can take 5 strikers. At a push he can leave Downing at home and play walcott on the left and that would allow a 7th defender.

6 I would take would be Johnson, Brown, Terry, Ferdinand, Lescott, Ashley Cole - gives good versatility or swap Brown with Neville and take Bridge if taking 7.

I am surprised Mark Hughes isn't getting more pressure from the media though given how much he has spent and they are not winning games at all at the moment.

Hoping Wolves get relegated (cos Mick McCarthy is rubbish), Blackburn and Bolton (it will stop gartside harping on about a 2-tier league and the Old Firm)

Also has anyone noticed if Liverpool lose their last 2 and Debrecen win their last 2 LFC won't even qualify for the Europa league. If that happens and they fall further down the league will it still be "in rafa we trust"?

After the home game, i'm also not taking this match as a given, like some people seem to, but if i don't believe we have the quality to Beat Debrecen then i might as well give up & go home.

In goal i'd take Rob Green (done better than foster & Hart for England, arguably stronger mentally than Robinson) and 1 of Robinson, Hart or Kirkland, despite what happened sunday (i wonder who's more gutted about Spurs' 8th being classed as an OG - Kirkland or Bentley?)

I'd take Theo instead of Owen - Not because he's past it, just that i think Jermain does the same job but better, and i have fantasies of Theo & Lennon terrorising teams with an ageing backline (Italy, Argentina)

I've always had a soft spot for Joe Cole partly because we were born on the same day, but mainly as he's our most naturally skillful player, even ahead of Rooney. When i think of the idea of....
    Crouch

    Cole Rooney Gerrard

    Barry/Hargreaves Lampard

    Cashley Terry Rio Johnson

    James

.....up against Brazil Germany or Spain, then i really do think we can match them. With people like Lennon Walcott & Defoe to come on with real pace it could actually be quite exciting watching England. Despite all his good qualities, Emile has had 1 shot on target THIS SEASON. Nuff said. The movement offered by that attacking 3, allied to Crouchys hold up play would make us much less predictable, which i believe is how we're perceived overseas.

way i see it, Hargreaves and Milner can both cover the fullbacks, where the likes of Brown and (to a lesser extent) Lescott can't.

Can't see how you can still take Bent, Jacks. He can do the job in the premiereship, but he's prone to missing sitters like Andrew Cole was, but doesn't offer enough else. If he played the holding role like Carlton Cole or Heskey he'd be competiting with either for their places. But he's not a patch on Defoe or Owen for the on-the-shoulder striker role.

Cole is the most flexible of the strikers, perfect foil for Rooney IMO.

I like Walcott for his ability to scare the carp out of defenders, his confidence and his finishing, but his fitness is proving an issue (much like Hargreaves you could argue). I'd have him on the plane ahead of SWP, Downing, Crouch and as a backup for Carlton or Defoe, and Lennon or Milner though.

The principle (aside from keepers which is just down to preference) is the flexibility in the squad.

My standard first team would be:
    Rooney

    Lampard

Cole, Barry, Gerrard, Lennon (Hargreaves to step in for Gerrard or Barry depending on form and fitness)

    Cole, Terry, Rio, Johnson

    Foster

Where we need a battering ram approach to the defence, i'd either drop Lampard for Cole / Heskey and move Rooney deeper, or the following:

    Cole / Heskey

    Rooney, Lampard, Gerrard

    Beckham

    Cole, Terry, Rio, Johnson

    Foster

simply because it makes perfect use of our most dangerous three players in Lampard, Gerrard and Rooney from knockdowns, while the forward holds the defence at bay. With Beckham supplying the ammunition and picking up off the defence.

    Against Brazil in the final:

    Rooney

    Lampard

    Cole, Barry, Gerrard, Beckham

    Cole, Terry, Rio, Brown

    Foster

Because it covers their strengths and plays to ours. Rooney would occupy Lucio plenty and probably win a penalty or two. We're not going to beat their fullbacks for pace, so trickery and crossing is the order of the day - Lennon to come on towards the end to take advantage of our lead. A tough but fast-attacking midfield to break to support Rooney.

Owen to come on for Barry late in the game to snatch the winner, with Beckham moving to the centre and Gerrard more free to bust forwards. Lampard being chubby and taking long shots all game to test their eratic keepers.

Perfect. To summarise, the squad needs flexibility - not too many outright players who can only do one thing.

I agree in theory, but the problem is Lampard is completely unsuited to the central midfield role. I've started to respect him (started, mind) when he plays further forwards. But he's completely NOT the man to be demanding the ball from the defence as all he ever does is pass it back to them or sideways. Gerrard will turn with it, and Beckham is perfect for it, but will never be starting so its pointless even suggesting it.

Also, Gerrard will offer cover for Johnson's forward runs, whereas Lampard will leave that side vulnerable. Gerrard can also make those groin testing runs from midfield with the ball, again not something typical from Lampard. On the other hand, Lampard can do what Gerrard does further forward, which is to link up midfield and Rooney.

England's problem is that gap, and Rooney can push on knowing that Lampard will be playing the ball through (something i've come to realise he can actually do) and also more importantly, he will bust into the area around the back of the defender onto the crafty ball from Rooney. If we do this, he'll end up our top scorer and we'll win the World Cup.

See, Gerrard and Lampard will both be able to get into the area in that way, while Lampard playing deep will waste him.

God knows I hate the lad, but i accept he's good at shooting and going missing (from defenders' radar). If we're going to do well, we need to play to our strengths. Gerrard would be vital playing to his strengths from deep. He's not really an off-the-forward player, nor is he a winger. Let him be the ball winner, with driving, break-inducing passes and runs.

Seriously, picturing that team formation gets me excited for the world cup.

aside from this Fiorentina will hopefully lose tonight, but will beat Liverpool in the final game to stick that sweet dagger into the scouse hearts.

Interestingly though they offered Hard another role at the club. Could it have been something stress/helath related forcing him to step down that we don't yet know about?

He sorted out the mess that Tony Adams left him and kept Pompey up last year.

He's had to sell off all his players and build a squad of loanees. He's had one mickey mouse takeover to deal with before being promised money that never appeared.

He's had to make statements when players wages hadn't been paid. He's had another mickey mouse takeover to deal with five minutes after the first one more money promised that didn't show up before a trnasfer embargo was slapped on the team and now they've given him the old heave ho.

I defy anyone to do any better with a team that badly run.

I agree with tommyb - in fact i called those substitutions at roughly the same time (tommys not rafa's). It's the most frustrating thing for us. Although i will quantify that with the fact that rafa sees Aquilani day in day out, and knows when he's fit. As he's pretty much staked his reputation on him, if he got injured again because he wasn't really ready he'd be castigated.

Def:Johnson, Terry, Ferdinand, Upson, Lescott, A.Cole, Bridge, Jagielka
Mid:Walcott, Lennon, Barry, Hargreaves, Gerrard, J. Cole, Beckham, Lampard
    For:Cole, Rooney, Defoe, Crouch
