Ok, cards on table; I spent the best part of two decades working for the opposition, much of it presenting ITV Anglia’s hitherto burgeoning portfolio of sports programmes. Halcyon days; coverage of live Football League games often peaked up and around Coronation Street levels, such was the appeal of local derbies featuring Norwich City and Ipswich Town.

 It was ITV’s decision to call time on regional sports coverage that effectively persuaded me it was time to move on. Little did I know within a couple of years I would be running an independent, producing a regional Football League programme for the BBC.

 

 

I must admit I did something of a double take when I first heard talk of the BBC producing a regional football programme; after all, local - or regional - programmes were ITV’s unique selling point. Not any more.

The first time I sent a text message to Robbie Savage, I decided it was best to be honest. As I tried to persuade him to become a regular pundit on Late Kick Off, I confessed: "I used to join in the abuse when you played at Molineux." The instant reply gave me a hint of what to expect from him over the the next 12 months. "Must have been a long time ago pal," he said. "Because I spent most of my career in the Premier League!"

Robbie telling me straight - but with a smile on his face. While my team Wolves had struggled to even reach the Premier League, he had been a regular and consistent performer in the top flight with Birmingham and Blackburn. A year later and I'm delighted that Robbie has once again agreed to appear on the show - despite his blossoming media career, his day job as captain of Derby County, and his hopes of re-awakening his Welsh international career.

Late Kick Off is back on BBC One from Monday, January 17th at the new time of 11.05pm. It's a regional show which means we can focus on your club, your players, your managers. We'll be giving you 'access all areas' to the week's top news stories, backroom reports, interviews, discussion and match analysis from all the 72 Football League clubs across England. We'll be using this blog to give you a unique insight into how we put the programme together each week. Follow us as we give you the inside track on our dealings with your managers and players and how we manage to get hold of those stories that you don't find anywhere else.
