Sneak preview of our new F1 TV title sequence

Post categories:

F1 Mole | 14:18 UK time, Friday, 27 March 2009

Mole has been busy today and managed to unearth a sneak preview of the opening titles of BBC Sport' s Formula 1 TV coverage.

The title sequence uses the iconic track "The Chain", a song recorded in 1976 and released on Fleetwood Mac's best-selling album Rumours.

As fans will know, it was used as the theme song for BBC Sport's Grand Prix programme from 1978 until the end of 1996, when ITV Sport took over the rights. And now it's back. Here are the first few seconds of our new titles - see what you think...

In order to see this content you need to have both Javascript enabled and Flash installed. Visit BBC Webwise for full instructions. If you're reading via RSS, you'll need to visit the blog to access this content.

(The titles will first be played in full when F1 returns to BBC One for coverage of qualifying for the Australian Grand Prix on Saturday 28 March. Coverage of qualifying starts at 0500 BST (BBC One/Red Button/5 Live sports extra/online). There will be a re-run at 1300 BST, BBC One.)

The sound effects in general are OTT and too loud in the mix. How about slightly more subtle sfx like in the 90s titles? Sound effects in the quiet bit before it kicks off take away from the suspense of the music. Graphics: They look better than ITV's snakes and flames, but I don't like the CGI car races, why not some real footage? Has real F1 got so boring there isn't any modern footage to make the titles look exciting enough? At the very least turn the sound effects DOWN!

Lightning is a good touch but wait till the sound dies away before you cut to the Chain. The first note MAKES the theme and should not be obscured by any other sound fx.

I like the sound of the FX, except the lightning that interferes with the opening bars of The Chain - and it is those opening bars that are so iconic. The rumble leading-in is enough, without the crash. Rumble-fade-twang would be much better.

The faceless bloke is OK, but it really does start out like Jenson - especially as ITV used a similar back-lit image for his part of their intro. It was my first thought seeing that - a copy...

The colour-switching of the helmet is good - although switching between the real helmet colours of the real drivers would have been better there.

We're left to guess what happens to the video while the music/FX continue (and I didn't see the news earlier). I hope it becomes live action, rather than CGI, but maybe this will change as the season progresses and the bank of interesting shots increases.

But mostly, I just felt that it could have featured omages to some of the classic F1 moments: 2 cars wheel to wheel down a main straight with sparks flying, a car taking another one out on a sharp (Australian) right hander, a sizzling over taking on the outside of a long curve. O, and those sound affects are just plain annoying.

Also i can't understand why everyone likes Murray Walker so much. Towards the end of his career he was more annoying as he couldn't get anything right. I was screaming at the TV about something and it took someone like a producer or Martin Brundle to tell him before he realised!! He's past it. Though Jon Legard was atrocious in qualifying. If you want to see why, go to the highlights and check out the last minute of qualifying. All he was talking about was Button this Button that and not bothering to even look who was actually crossing the line like Brundle was. i can see the board meeting now... lets have a lightning bolt, that's dramatic, and we have to show as many helmets so to not be over supportive of one person/team, and we have to have a crash, but not a real one as that might offend someone, and we have to make it look like an x-station game as i hear lots of people have them... etc.

Top work on the Formula One web pages as well. Very entertaining and informative. Slight gripe about the 'qualifying' and 'grid' tabs on the results pages though. What's the point in having two tabs with exactly the same information on? Could you not have one tab with times and positions immediately after qualifying and the other tab with times and positions after penalties, etc?

Also TV commentary, I really enjoyed. Legard has done a really good job for his first attempt at TV commentary and his genuine enthusiasm really makes the action more entertaining. However as some people have said his radio origins do mean he states the obvious a bit too often and he definitely needs to let Brundle talk more. I'm sure it will fall into place in time though.

As a previous comment has said, the driver looks more Button than Stig. The BBC is receiving a lot of credit for their previous coverage of F1, but I go back to the late 60's and 70's, during which period the BBC refused to show F1 coverage, even though they had the rights, as Surtess were sponsored by Durex. How amazing and stupid does that decision now seem. It was extremely frustrating at the time and should not be forgotten.

The music is great but the sequence (and sound effects) are terrible! Why can't we have clips of past (and current) masters doing what they do best? Is F1 so boring that we need to make up some far-fetched computer generated action?

Overall, however, the coverage this morning was good. Jake and DC worked very well (not so sure about Eddie's cameo though). As for the commentary, Martin was at his usual best but was unduly interrupted by Leggard's ponderous and often pointless dialogue. DC or Anthony Davidson would probably be a better companion for Martin in the commentary box. If the commentary continues in a similar fashion, I'll probably reach for the red button and listen to 5 Live instead...

I'm ecstatic that F1 is back on the Beeb!

The quality of coverage is already far superior to that of the previous broadcaster that had annoying retail opportunities that lasted circa 2 min 45 sec...
(In the course of a grand prix race, that was 10 laps of missed action...)

The professionalism of the presenters and pundits is impressive.
Maurice Hamilton and Ian Philips were extremley entertaining with their commentary during the practice sessions on Friday.

I also enjoyed the second practise broadcast with David Croft together with F1 jockey, Anthony Davidson. Holly Samos (Holly Hotlips) was knowledgeable in her reports from the pit lane - also found the banter between the commentary booth and Holly laid back and informative.

Jonathan Legard and Martin Brundle were great together, and I'm glad to see that Ted Kravitz came over from the "other side" to continue his interviews with the key people and probe the current key issues of the race weekend.

Even though Jake Humphrey has worked on other BBC Sports programmes before, I am glad that he has been chosen to front a more "high profile" sports event such as F1 coverage.

The only criticism I have at this point in time is that Jonathan and Martin tend to talk over each other, but hey, its early days and they have time to iron out these initial teething troubles.
...ohh and er, Eddie Jordan, great to have him as a pundit with his wit and wisdom but give David Coulthard more airtime for his views!

It's great that the signature Fleetwood Mac tune is back, and with regard to previous bloggers comments about the generic F1 computer graphics I think they work well - much better than the indent F1 preview between programmes of so-called F1 cars driving downtown in a South African city.

Counting down the hours for the first Grand Prix of 2009 - here's hoping for a great race Down Under.

I should say, despite my earlier criticisms of the CGI graphics, every other facet of BBC's coverage so far has been on a whole different planet of awesome. Everything, from radio to red button to online to BBC1 and iPlayer. I love being in Britain purely for the joy of having the BBC and BBC Sport. ITV should just give up sports - they're not even on the same planet, leave alone division, as BBC.

All that is needed is some slick clips of real F1 footage in the intro, and you have yourself the greatest broadcast package in history.

We all knew The Chain would be back ages ago, so no surprise wow factor for that.

The CGI is good, but it can't replace real action. It's the only thing really wrong with it.

Good too see F1 back on the BBC, glad to hear the chain back, graphics are good in the intro, much better than the last few years, I agree that the sound effects added are not as cool, but 98% isn't bad.

I think its quite a good sequence and it's brilliant to have the chain back!!!!! better then anything ITV could do, but with such a classic tune i thought the BBC would have used proper F1 clips to go with the song. the graphics seem to me to be to modern for the song

Like "the chain". I was hoping that getting rid of ITV would mean we had a commentator at last who could pronounce "sixth". Sadly no change there. I know it's minor but I find it infuriating - and judging by Mclaren's performance so far we could be hearing "sickth" a lot this season.

It's great to have the Chain back! The graphics would look better in High Definition. In fact, all F1 would be better in High Definition. Some countries may have issues with this, but there are some where it shouldn't pose a problem. Come on BBC get with it!!

Having just watched the coverage, well done BBC.

Please please get someone else other than Legard, Brundle completely outclassed Legard. Even my other half who can't stand F1 said it was like watching a race of yester-year with JL's commentary. James Allen wasn't the best but even he could make a boring race seem exciting.

Whatever you do, don't bring back the dinosaur for even one commentary. Yes, Murray was brillant in his day but he got more than annoying towards the end. Move on!!!

Congratulations to Brawn and the team, brilliant result.

Keep up the good work Beeb :)

Really enjoyed the coverage of the race and the new BBC team except the commentary by Jonathan Legard.
Several of my friends all said the same. He sounded like he was commentaing on a horse race and it sounded like he thought we could not see what was going on. Martin brundle could not get a word in.
Please get someone else to share the mike with MB.

having seen sequence on u tube WOW!! come on BBC Pull your socks up re edit use old footage if you have to
Enjoyed the race what a result Braun deserved the dream finish how good to see two team mates so pleased for each other lets hope Ross Braun now finds additional sponsors .
