Tinie Tempah - 'Pass Out'

Tinie Tempah

There is a bit at the beginning of the video here which looks disturbingly like the sweat of Tinie's brow flying off his face and forming a ring around his head, a bit like the rings of Saturn.

This presents several joke opportunities, which, if you'll indulge me a second, I am about to explore. Reinforce those sides, and here we go:

I've heard of sweat-rings but this is ridiculous... RIMSHOT!

If you like him, you should probably wipe the ring off him... QUIETER RIMSHOT!

What does Tinie Tempah like to do after he's been to the gym? Give someone a ring... EVEN QUIETER RIMSHOT!

What's Tinie Tempah's favourite day of the week? Saturn-day*... NO RIMSHOT!

(Here's the video. Magic shades!)

Not that I am alone in attempting some one-liners. Tinie himself has a (much, much better) way with the funny arrogance, throwing out bizarre little gems like "I've been Southampton but I've never been to Scunthorpe" or "I've got so many clothes I keep them in my aunt's house". Which you really wouldn't expect from a song about falling over.

You'll be too busy trying to fight your way out from under an avalanche of extreme bass to laugh, of course: in much the same way that you'd struggle to send a text if a woolly mammoth was sitting in your lap. But on my trusty, tinny old work headphones, I can hear 'em, and I'm kind of giggledancing, if such a thing wasn't a massive blot on my otherwise flawless hard man reputation.

All in all, a brilliant combination of crushing sound, raw delivery, sharp cheekbones, good specs and clever wordplay. His wordplay, of course, not mine.

It might be the random ska bit that pops up from time to time but for me this song doesn't seem to fit together properly. There's the rapping bit, the (already mentioned) ska bit and the drum n bass bit at the end, normally this wouldn't be a problem (when done well it can be the best thing about a song) but in this song it doesn't all seem to work together. On their own those parts would be great but together they seem to clash a bit too much.

This is a class debut from Tinie . Thousands are gonna love it , and it sounds fantastic on the dancefloor.

    Top 20 for sure !

  • Comment number 3.

Oh come on spirit - Top 20? You're hedging your bets there, aren't you!

I'm gonna say I reckon this will be a massive crossover no.1 hit.

  • Comment number 4.

Yeah give us passion Kutox , that's what we want !

I have been listening to Pass Out for the last 6 months , and waiting for it's release intently .

Your key point Kutox , is that it will be a massive CROSSOVER hit , as it fuses many different styles and fuses it with wonderful vocal deliveries , hypnotic dance elemements , and it will commercially appeal to thousands.
Yes this will be HUGE !!
Everything in this song , works perfectly , and in 2010 , the appeal factor for this track is immense . I can feel it !

This will be the second time Scunthorpe will feature in a top 20 hit , the first time being It's Grim Up North by Justified Ancients of Mu Mu . ( The Jamms ) or (The KLF ).

  • Comment number 5.

OK , just for you Kutox , I will narrow it down some more .

Using my ear for a pop hit , 7 days before next Sunday , I predict that Pass Out will be a top 5 hit !!

    Is that better ?

  • Comment number 6.

I agree with Spirit, Pass Out's a definate top 5 hit but I think that either Derulo or Rihanna will be no.1 next week.

  • Comment number 7.

Is it just me or does the guy who does the singy bit an absolute double of Jermaine Jackson?! Check it at 40 seconds, its rather uncanny...

The song is average at best, but apparently this doesn't mean anything anymore in chartland as a certain Miss Goulding is only at number 4 tonight despite her song knocking Rihanna's or Derulo's out of the water talent wise in my opinion, so therefore i agree with's spirits prediction. As it is often wise to do...

2, maybe 3 stars on a good day.

    Lights is out tomorrow! :D

  • Comment number 8.

Rhianna won't hit number one. She's peaked this week, and Im surprised it peaked this high.

  • Comment number 9.

My prediction for this track? Number 1.

    Its brilliant.

Apart from the obvious lyrical cleverness it's the crossoverness I love. Yes crossoverness is now a word. The ridiculous mix up of sounds shouldn't really work. I could be cynical and say it's just them trying to appeal to everybody. But it works so well I'm not going to complain!

In particular I love the way it just goes mental at the end.

    Video's awful though.

  • Comment number 11.

Haha spirit :) top 5 seems much more likely than top 20, but I'm still standing by my prediction, made early Sunday morning, that it will be no.1.

Going back to our earlier point for a second... it's brilliant how the song manages to have huge commercial potential, while still sounding very 'underground' at the same time, if you know what I mean. Bringing this kind of music to a wider audience.

  • Comment number 12.

Yeah , some brilliant points here .

    Love Liam's feeling of " crossoverness "

And I like Kutox's idea of Pass Out being commercial yet underground at the same time . ( That in the pop world is a hard trick to pull off ! )

  • Comment number 13.

Hahahaha my post did actually get refered.

For anybody wondering, I literally said -

"I couldnt get away with posting RIM@@@@". A word that Frazzle McDazzle used in his review.

    Obviously I was right?

  • Comment number 14.

I am almost certain that for better or worse this song is going to be number 1 next week, continuing the trend of grime artists turning to pop music and making top ten hits. The song is not bad in itself, although I have heard much better and it does make me wonder how something with literally no hook can make it to the top five with such ease and how turned off by guitar music people now are. (Just have a look at where Muse have entered in this weeks top 40.) Then again I suppose we will see how this man fares in the long run, for now he's hot material but ten years down the line hip hop tends to lose its shine. We shall see...

  • Comment number 15.

George , the reason Muse have charted so lowly with The Resistance is that over a million people have the track already , in some guise . Their album sold over 150,000 copies in it's first week , for example .

Regarding the Tinie Tempah track , are you suggesting that it literally has no hook ?

To me it is hook laden , musically and lyrically , that's why thousands will buy it .
Interested in your take on it's lack of hooks ?

  • Comment number 16.

Muse releasing the wrong tracks from the album doesn't help matters (see previous rants).

The fact that the album sold A LOT means that normally by the third single people are either going to have the album or not. If not and they like the track, they will get it anyway.

  • Comment number 17.

Muse are more of an album band, I don't think they are too worried how their singles fare in the charts. They sell more albums than these hip hop and grime acts who get singles in the top 10, as George mentions.

  • Comment number 18.

Regarding Pass Out , there is a huge media buzz about this track , that is growing and growing . Add the intensive radio play , and I am sure you are looking at a top 3 hit on Sunday , and possibly higher . . .

Kutox's early prediction for a NUMBER 1 , may be proven right .

  • Comment number 19.

Actually , Jason Derulo's album is released this week , so his single IN MY HEAD will not be a threat , so I think PASS OUT , will be in the top 2 , and the FLOZZIE mash-up will diminish .
If I had to be a betting man , I would say number 1 for Pass Out .

  • Comment number 20.

Yeah I see what you mean about the Muse sales thing, however you must agree this song isn't the catchiest tune you have heard in the last week, I do however very much enjoy the lyrics, and have no doubt it will be number 1.

  • Comment number 21.

You mean Im actually going to get a prediction right?!?

  • Comment number 22.

well it is the catchiest tune I have heard this week and does indeed sound like a number 1 . You may be right LIAM .

  • Comment number 23.

KUTOX and LIAM are both predictive geniuses !!!!

All hail KUTOX AND LIAM !!!

  • Comment number 24.

    lets not go overboard... ;)

  • Comment number 25.

    Hail me now bish!

  • Comment number 26.

It'll be interesting to see the sales stats this week. I wouldn't be surprised if it's topped the 100k mark already.

  • Comment number 27.

Pass Out's definately at no.1 then seeing as In My Head's drops two places.

  • Comment number 28.

Well at least I was right about a Top 10 hit for Boyzone and top 20 hits for Daisy Dares You and Wiley ft. Emeli Sande.

  • Comment number 29.

    Congratulations to Tinie !!

Number 1 , and a lot of us could hear that thousands of other people would also love this track .

  • Comment number 30.

Interesting to see how high Rude Boy has gotten to. I don't think any of us expected it to get that high when it came out, not even Spirit!

  • Comment number 31.

    Big up to KUTOX !

Shame LIAM , spoilt his big moment , by saying @8 that RIHANNA peaked last week at number 3 .

This week RUDE BOY is NUMBER 2 !!!

  • Comment number 32.

Next week I'm expecting top 20 hits for Justin Bieber *shudder*, Gabriella Cilmi and Black Eyed Peas, and a top 30 hit for McLean with My Name.

  • Comment number 33.

    well done xx

  • Comment number 34.

I bet our good friend Thranjax from Scunthorpe is ecstatic !

It is not everyday , that the place you live , is named in the lyrics of a number 1 single !

Shame Tinie has NEVER been there !

  • Comment number 35.

Also well done to Ellie Goulding for securing her first no.1 album.

And not so well done to Alphabeat their album currently stands at no.39 the same place as their single Hole In My Heart.

  • Comment number 36.

"But in this song , it all doesn't seem to work together "

Harry , I wonder if you still agree with your comment at 1 , about this weeks number 1 single .

Did you listen to the song only once or twice before commenting ?

I heard this was a killer track on first play , but by listen number 5 , I could hear that it would be awesome on a commercial level , as it sounded fresh and compelling .

  • Comment number 37.

I dunno. I'm not feeling this song at all. Don't care if it gets to Number 1.

  • Comment number 38.

Yep spirit, big up to me! :)

I actually think there's a chance Rihanna might take no.1 next week.

  • Comment number 39.

    @ 30 .

So Harry , you didn't think that I could hear that Rihanna would chart this high with Rude Boy ?

Go back to my comment 12 ,on Rude Boy, on the 18th of February , where I said that Rude Boy was a commercial tour de force and would be in or around the top 5 , no problem in the weeks to come .

    Number 2 IS in the top 5 isn't it Buddy ? :)

  • Comment number 40.

    @ 36

Nah Spirit, my point still stands and actually the more I listen the more annoying that keyboard riff gets!

    @ 39

If you were confident it would get there you would have said top 3 wouldn't you. Buddy :)

  • Comment number 41.

If I was confident that it would get to number 2 , I should have said Top 2 ,not top 3 , surely handsome ? :)

Oh come on though , I was the only voice saying top 5, weeks ago. :)

    *Mutters*

"Never get any credit round here. "

  • Comment number 42.

Im very surprised that Rhinna song charted so well. I was thinking it would be lucky to top 5.

Shows that people will buy any old tut I guess!

  • Comment number 43.

Number one! Well done Tinie! This song may not be the deepest lyrically but it's fun and catchy. I personally think the instrumental is ON POINT! IT sounds crazy in the club!

  • Comment number 44.

The lyrics are my favourite bit...

  • Comment number 45.

2 weeks at number 1 for Tinie , and he says the greatest thing about performing Pass Out live, is that the crowd always seem to know all the words and he doesn't need to sing or rap a single sound .

That is the mark of a song that has severely pricked the public's consciousness .

    Congratulations Tinie !

  • Comment number 46.

You suffered the Chartshow tonight too Spirit :p. See Reggie's latest for my thoughts.

  • Comment number 47.

So what's a CLC COMPRESSOR? I'm sure you guyz know...its in the lyrics.

  • Comment number 48.

    EXCLUSIVE

I am really liking Tinie Tempah's next single .

It's called FRISKY and will be released in early June .

Again it has a production credit to Labrinth , and sounds great on the dancefloor.
Some very risque lyrics but some very commercial possibilities.
    It's another club banger .

I do believe that Radio 1 , will give it it first official airing , sometime on Wednesday .

  • Comment number 49.

Tinie Tempah brings music of the UK together, in terms of Hip Hop and the local genres of Grime, Garage and Dance. He really does offer something different because he is original. I believe that he can and will be in the UK music history books in future ! With three hit records of his first album and no major artist on hit album yet we are in for a treat in the future.

  • Comment number 50.

He has now had 4 hit records Tuli . x

  • Comment number 52.

This song is still so good... how does Tinie do it?

  • Comment number 53.

I honestly don't know, but I've whatever it is, it's really made me warm to him of late. I can't wait for his duet with Katy Perry to be unleashed!

  • Comment number 54.

Yep, still love this song. One of the songs which 2010 will be remembered for, whether some people like it or not! Of all the 'grime-pop' chart hits of the last few years, this one stood out.

All of Tinie's singles are great, although Invincible is a bit meh.

  • Comment number 55.

This songs really grown on me, I think it's something to do with Tinie not taking himself seriously that makes me like him so much.

  • Comment number 56.

Yep. I remember when Frisky was first played on Zane's show, Tinie spoke on the phone to Zane and said "as you can probably tell, I'm having a lot of fun, and making music that doesn't have to sound any certain way". I just love his attutide - every time he speaks about his music, he really gets across his passion and enthusiasm - which is so important for any artist.

I know his lyrics aren't always the best, but he does have some really catchy lines, for example in Frisky the infamous 'would you risk it for a chocolate biscuit', it's so silly and meaningless, yet so clever at the same time! I find it impossible not to sing (or rap :P) along to it every time I hear it! Things like that are what make him stand out from the crowd.

  • Comment number 57.

Seriously, Tinie Tempah is almost a flawless artist, he's so clever and silly (in a good way, of course) with his songs, its unbelievable. My only complaint is that Wonderman (in the top 5 songs of last year for me) should have been his next single, instead of the meh-ish Invincible.

    @53 I'm sure that'll be good :)

  • Comment number 58.

Actually, come to think of it, someone posted a link to Katy Perry's 'reworked' new single with Tinie on DS the other day. *finds link* Here it is:

    http://punchbowlblog.com/2010/12/27/new-music-katy-perry-ft-tinie-tempah-e-t/

  • Comment number 59.

    @56

And to think, his reidiculous lines are the reason I hated him in the first place! :L

And that collaboration is really good! It's n ot his best work, and it's not the most seemless rap ever but I do believe this will prevent Katy from be stunted by the fourth single slump. Top 10 material?
