Toby's Blog Picture

Happy New Year!  Hello again. And sorry it’s been too long.

Every year we set ourselves the task of creating something bigger and bolder and better than anything that’s happened before. We knew this year was going to be especially tough because of the various cast changes. Not only would it be our first series without Aidan, but Russell had decided that series 4 would be his last, and Sinead had decided that her Being Human journey had come to an end after series 3. The mountain before us seemed even higher than usual.

But once we’d stopped rocking and shaking, we saw Series 4 as an opportunity: We could invent new characters, expand the show in different directions, create new worlds and monsters and heroes, and add new layers to the overarching Being Human mythology. Suddenly Series 4 was a genuinely thrilling prospect.

But the essential DNA of show remains the same. Recently I found the pitch document I wrote for series 1. This was the opening paragraph:

“We’re the stuff of nightmares. And we’re your only hope. George, Mitchell and Annie yearn for their vanished humanity. Being Human is a unique twist on the aspirational drama, as the things Mitchell Annie and George struggle to achieve are so common place and normal to us, yet impossibly remote to them. And the desire to be accepted by their old lost race will drive them to acts of immense courage, and foolish hazard. Our heroes may be like characters that have tumbled from the pages of a book, but their problems are always recognisably human, and the stories will strike a balance between the supernatural and the domestic.”

This was for our and the BBC’s eyes only. Hence the rather self-conscious ‘pitch-speak’ (And the odd contradiction. The characters are remote from us, yet share our problems? What? Shut up, Toby. Seriously. Stick to dialogue and stage directions.) Obviously a lot can happen in four years. But looking back at it now, I’m relieved to see that those words are still relevant for a show that has a new cast, a new location, an American reincarnation and expanded beyond our wildest dreams.

As ever Being Human lives or dies on the strength of the characters and the cast, and that’s why I think this series is our strongest yet.

Damien Molony joins the team as Hal. Hand on heart, I think he’s one of the most exciting and versatile actors of his generation. Watching his performance grow over the filming was a joy.

Then there’s Michael Socha. Promoted from semi-regular to lead. If you thought he was good in series 3, wait till you see what he does in series 4. Michael will break your heart this year.

And of course beautiful Lenora. Our star. The heart of the show. This year she gives a truly breathtaking performance. One of my favourite moments of 2011 was the first full screening of episode two, when she left us all with our jaws on our chests.

As I said earlier, Russell and Sinead felt it was time to hang up the wolf ears and fangs. We were obviously very disappointed to see them go, but as I’ve always said about our cast, you can’t hang on to actors that good forever. I’m reminded of a moment in series 2, when George is talking about moving in with his girlfriend. Annie is devastated, but Mitchell knows that there’s not much they can do. Then Annie leans across to Mitchell and mutters “We have a cage…”

Believe me, the thought did occur to us too.

So what have you got to look forward to?

We introduce you to a new type of Supernatural creature (thank you, Wikipedia); there are some stunning guest appearances from Alex Jennings, Mark Gatiss, James Lance, Mark Williams, Amanda Abbingdon, Craig Roberts (reprising his role as teenage vampire Adam), Selina Griffiths and Ellie Kendrick; there’s a genuinely shocking death, and we take you to somewhere we’ve never been to before.

News of Russell’s departure – and to Aidan’s before that – was greeted with rather wearying predictions that the show was now ‘over’. But I write this a few days after seeing the finished cut of episode eight, and I’m happy to report that it’s never been in ruder health. The new cast, the crew and directors and the other writers have pulled off something extraordinary and completely reinvigorated the show. I hope you’ll agree, rumours of Being Human’s death have been greatly exaggerated.

Thank you for this Toby and hello! :)

I'm looking forward to finding out what season four has in store and i'm waiting to be wowed and impressed. I'm looking forward to meeting the new characters and how they fit into the mythos. I will miss Russell/George, he and Aidan/Mitchell had such a true connection but i haven't written Being Human off and as long as there is a show, i'll watch.

Onwards and onwards and all of that :)

EW Edgar Wyndham, Lee Ingleby, amazing "from head office"

A new blog, happy dance ...
    waiting was worth it.

They were whinging and moaning and Fiat Blog and all became alive

  • Comment number 21.

Is it me or on the characters page, only Annie and Georges photos have changed?
Why hasnt Nina's? Is it telling us something?

  • Comment number 22.

Hullo Lenoras boy! Good to see you here.

  • Comment number 23.

@Saint thank you... i do have to admit i had to look it up and see who he was. im going to have to rewatch series 3 pretty soon.

  • Comment number 24.

Now this is where it gets tricky. There is a new picture for George and Annie but no new picture for Nina.
This along with the fact SK made no mention of visiting Barry this year.

So no Nina in S4 Now killing her off screen I for some reason don't see that as a viable option. It would be a little off.

Yes I am aware that Daisy was killed off screen but still having her appear for one episode just to die would have not been needed to end her story. In a way she had already died with Ivan.

Nina's story - she's survived the chamber and a encounter with a vengeful Herrick. Not only that is carrying the first natural born werewolf. to kill her off screen. It wouldn't fit. That's why I think she must live somewhere else. Possibility of being in or even just refereed to in S5 would be fun. Fingers crossed.

  • Comment number 25.

I should re-watch from series 1 some time soon x

  • Comment number 26.

Hey Ewan - you'll like this one. The pic on that SFX article you posted on the last blog has been pulled. No sign of it. Not een a sniff.

  • Comment number 27.

@Ewan, i dont think they would kill nina off without BH fans seeing, so youve got a point, maybe shes in s4 but not as a main character. As you said she could be living elsewhere and maybe we only see bits of when george goes to visit her and the baby? Maybe thats why George looked so sad (obviously as well because hes just killed his best friend) in his photo.

  • Comment number 28.

It'll be odd to have the show without Aidan and Russell (and possibly Sinead?), but even if the whole cast had been replaced I'd stick with the show so long as it continued to show the potential and genius (writing, acting, direction, etc) it has these past three seasons. Looking forward to a very different but nevertheless brilliant season 4!

  • Comment number 29.

sea: I noticed the pics had gone too, just when i wanted to have another look at it. Ah well, roll on Wednesday when i can buy it :)

Poor George looks so wretched in his new pic doesn't he? :(

  • Comment number 30.

Yes he does Ruby - and Annie's not much better. Let's hope the rest of the cast don't look so forlorn.

  • Comment number 31.

Hi tangwysti! Gosh! You'e not been here for nearly two years!!!

  • Comment number 32.

Hi Toby, Happy New Year everyone! I have to admit I was a little concerned how well the show could cope without George and Mitchell but after reading the episode titles I cannot wait! It's a shame we've lost Herrik too but I have no doubt Edgar will be just as big a baddie as he was.

Now to find something to do to fill in the time until the series starts.............oh look there's my BH dvds just conveniently sitting there..............isn't that a coincidence!

  • Comment number 33.

@the pic may have become unavailable but... a lil'Miss did download the pic... and yup it is facing my screen now... just so you know
    nothing is lost

  • Comment number 36.

Hi toby. Looking forward to the new series but for me Aidan will be missed greatly. I felt that mitchell was the heart of the show and was distraught when hewas killed off. Anyway i am still excited to see the new characters and what will happen in first ep following 'that' scene.

  • Comment number 37.

    *spoliers*
I know someone has already posted this but they mention all the other characters apart from Nina. Could be hinting towards what we were saying earlier.

Woohoo! Shiny New Blog! Hello Lord Toby - and thank you!

That was 'sock-it-to-them' stuff from Lord Toby! Wonderful!
A new blog every day? We'll have to get a camper-van...

    Evening All! Evening new mods!

  • Comment number 39.

    @ewan
    yes, the characteres pictures
whereas Annie and George have new bios and new pics... and Mitchell simply has new bio, Nina gets simply new...typo.
Have TPTB decided on her fate, do the bloggers who have been burning incense, chanting curs...spells since a certain 14th of March been granted their wish or simply the 'revamping' sorry could not avoid it, of the whole website will need more than this afternoon.?
Annie looks bright, decided and recovering from all last season stupid pills
George pic is gut wrenching. Poor George: His friend (bromance?) is dead, but it would take more than Mitchell passing to lead him to look like that... unless...

unless ... but very frightening idea
George - you've got a fight on your hands
Wyndham- and you a dead girlfriend (shooting Nina face to face with silver bullet pistol)
Wyndham leaves while George practices CPR and Annie dials 999; FINALLY Fuzzy is born through emergency C-section, but this time no miracle. George is left alone with Fuzzy, bitter and determined to find the vampires...any vampire. The pack will include Tom, Fuzzy and George... but at the end G and our Fuzzy will go to Cornwall with his parents to raise his son away from the vamps

  • Comment number 40.

Saint that makes sense. that would be a very good story line!!! They should do that if they are going to get rid of nina!

  • Comment number 41.

'the show has never been in ruder health' - you'd better believe it. Go Lord Toby go. Because it is in you I trust.............!!!

Bring it on I say..........bring it on!

Hey hey! New blog! Bring it on Lord Toby- new year, new characters. :D

    Ninas leaving?

I thought it was just Mitchell n George

  • Comment number 44.

Could someone please let Toby know in his latest blog post it's "WHET" your appetite not "WET."

    With thanks,

    Tom in Oz

  • Comment number 45.

Saffz, from day one when the filming started we have checked on tweeter who was filming and Lenora was always there, we heard of Cutler, Hal, Tom and Adam; we heard X was back: taking it meant George as Russell must have informed TW a long time prior to the filming so the scripts must have taken that in consideration. Imagine, Cliffhanger George as world saviour then season 5 no George, weird, isn't it?

    But Sinead... total mystery and by the way deep curtsey to Tom_in_Oz who informed us of RT leaving a good three months before it became official -see The Guardian interview with RT;

So Nina leaving... why not. Poetic justice from a vampire point of view, retribution from a denonciatrix who chose anonymity. Had she been straight with the police, I would have thought. I do not like you, but you play square. The anonymous phone call did her in, from my POV.

  • Comment number 46.

33 STX any chance you could share the disappeared pic? Who/what was it?

  • Comment number 55.

This is great, but the fans on the other side of the pond can not view video content on this page. Will there be a fix for that?

  • Comment number 56.

    *exhales*

Lord Toby+ the rest of the pack are back on speaking terms with the bloggers. Well, well, well, I might give S4 a tiny bitsy chance after all in spite of prior decision that I'm so done with it (AT and RT gone). Even if I cannot share the excitement of daily online content.

As I know that the lovely fellow bloggers out there will eventually put all the vids on youtube *courtseys and blows kisses*, I'll be looking 4ward to that and have some tea in the meantime, following the German saying "Abwarten und Tee trinken" = "Wait and have some tea."

  • Comment number 57.

    Morning All! Morning Mods!

Hello lucidthoughts - if you scroll up this page and look on the right, there is a section called, 'Elsewhere on the web'. The second one down is the Being Human YouTube Playlist - all the video content from this blog is there so that peeps from outside the UK can watch the vids. Hope this helps.

  • Comment number 58.

Morning all, hi Manc *waving*, morning mods. How exciting - it looks like we'll have plenty to look forward to and I'll certainly look forward to reading the blog every morning once more. The episode list looks intriguing. Now I'll wait with bated breath for news of the starting date!

  • Comment number 59.

Hello Buzzy! Hello Gingernut! How lovely to see you! I hope your hand is a lot better now. The online content sounds just wonderful, doesn't it? I wonder if our Blog Mistress Rebecca did some of the backstage filming? We might see her in a vid!

  • Comment number 60.

Yes, all better now, thank you Manc.
I hope they now update the right hand box here which reads, "Get daily updates on the filming of series two... follow the BH Blog team on Twitter. @bbcbeinghuman"
I didn't know we had a new Blog Mistress. Hi Rebecca *curtseys*

  • Comment number 61.

Good Morning Bloggers! Good Morning Mods! Gooooooooooooooooooood Morrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrning Miss Rebecca.

    This is exciting isn't it?

  • Comment number 62.

Morning Mods! How are we this fine (not so windy) morning?
Me and my mum have been talking about whether nina may or may not be leaving this series. My mum thinks that its more likely that she'll leave due to George leaving, but i dont think she'll leave that soon because we BH fans want to know what happens in a werewolf pregnancy and plus they cant really kill off another character as mitchell went last year *snifs* and george is going this year.

  • Comment number 63.

I've just re-read LT's message and noticed this ' Michael will break your heart this year'
Oh My!....................................must've missed that in the general excitement last night. How many times can a heart be broken?

  • Comment number 64.

Morning folks- bit of a buzz around the place- At last! We have something to focus on!

  • Comment number 65.

This is going to be quite different from the old Being Human. Lets hope TW can deliver what he promises.

Toby - his name is spelt AIDAN not AIDEN!!!!

  • Comment number 66.

*Massive spoiler* Story plots. This is from SFX on youtube.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QIk3b80iKC4
    Hope you like it! =D

  • Comment number 67.

    Morning Saaasssshhhhaaaa! *happy dance*

Morning lozzie! To be absolutely honest lozzie - no-one really knows about Nina - it is all pure speculation. But we don't know at all. One thing is sure, Sinead Keenan has said nothing (but then she generally doesn't). We'll just have to wait and see. Oh, and just to answer your question here - most of the BH Bloggers that are on twitter have the same name, so MancVamp is @MancVamp on twitter and so is everyone else. Hope that helps. x (you should be revising!)

  • Comment number 68.

    I'm a were-blogger? WTF? *looks down shirt* I know i'm a blogger but a were-blogger... that's a new one to me.

Typos are typos, sometimes when your brain is going at a million miles an hour, trying to remember important information to share with people, you stumble over stuff, that includes spelling. So a name was spelled incorrectly, so another word was spelled wrong, this is LT we're talking about, Lord of all he creates, a typo here and there is surely to be forgiven and in the main theme of things, generally unimportant. Doubt he thought 'ha, i'll spell Aidan's name wrong, that'll rile 'em up good'. He will read this back, see the typo's and probably have a face palm moment himself, mistakes happen :) Season Four is almost upon us.

I'm a wereblogger apparently, do i howl at the moon? i have times when i feel like i do but that's another story entirely ;)

  • Comment number 69.

64- RM oh yes - and you are so right - didn't we so need something to focus on. You are very wise. *waving*

65 - Hello Gail. Lord Toby has known Aidan for a very long time - I'm pretty sure he knows how to spell his name, and I'm sure he knows how to spell 'whet' too. I think that perhaps someone else made a typo whilst putting it onto the blog. @bbcbeinghuman tweeted last night to say sorry for the typos and that they would fix them as soon as possible (they were typing in the dark...) perhaps it will be fixed on Monday when they are back in the office?

  • Comment number 70.

    @hellooooo, were-bloggers!

yup, Ruby. Did you ever think that blogging and posting on the BH blog, did not come with... a price. The BH gene, ... it is spreading! All of us by day are nice happy souls, but then we 'change', 'we are turned' when we travel to this blog. No, we do not grow hair, hair? what a cute idea. no hair, no fangs, no ghostly uggboots, but... ideas.! hum, ? ideas?

    he he, evil cackling...

  • Comment number 71.

Hello Ruby, sorry, I didn't see your comment before I posted.

  • Comment number 72.

Hello Saint - rofl - reminds me of Wallace and Gromit! I'll have you know I am a vamp - and if Ewan and Lycan need to shave their palms on Monday, well... but sadly, as in the last full moon, "there may be trouble ahead"... someone will stir up trouble..... *sigh*

Having terrible trouble getting into fanfic today - sorry Katie.

  • Comment number 73.

Helllloooooooooo! Well that was exciting, right?

Appart from the typos which are of course MY fault and not Toby's.... forgive me. *looks down ashamed*.

    Anyway, I'll get it fixed.

Have a great Saturday were-bloggers and English teachers! x

Ave , webmistress, were-bloggeruri te salutant

  • Comment number 76.

I'm just going to have to get it on record about the myth of palm shaving. This slur has to be addressed as George pointed out to Mitchell could be seen as racist. For the simple fact like all assumptions based on stereotypes it is incorrect,

The Palm of the hand corresponds directly to the pad on a pawn and the pad is usually Without Hair or even Fur.

    That is all.

  • Comment number 77.

    @ewan

hence the concepts of deadist , wolfist and vampist?

  • Comment number 78.

76 rofl! Sorry Ewan. Sorry Lycan - for the slur! Love you both to bits x

73 Hello Rebecca - gosh, thanks for coming on here on a Saturday! Above and beyond the call of duty... Real Mitchell made a very valid point earlier - we need something to focus on really... 'chomping at the bit' hope we don't all look like a pack of savage dogs looking for a piece of meat but... it's been a while...deep breaths everyone - I'll make some tea, as Buzzy suggested.

  • Comment number 79.

Hi STX. I have the link to the episode titles, but there is no longer a pic attached. If the pic can't be posted here, perhaps you could just tell me who/what was in the pic?

  • Comment number 80.

73 - Afternoon Rebecca. As Manc says, thanks for popping here on what should be, I'm sure, your day off! Don't look down ashamed young lady. A typo is a typo, is a typo. This is a blog not bloomin Shakespeare! Although I understand you might not want to get anything wrong, it only proves you are human like the rest of us - or well most of us anyway - there is Annie, Tom, Nina, Mitchell RIP, etc to consider.
    A moustache twirl specially for you ?:^}

  • Comment number 81.

76 - 'The Palm of the hand corresponds directly to the pad on a pawn and the pad is usually Without Hair or even Fur.'

Is that the pawn from a chess game Ewan? I didn't know that - that shall be my new fact for the day :-) Cheers x

although it does say 'usually'...................runs off before he can catch me..........

  • Comment number 82.

Typo Smypo the n is near the space barn so who really cares?

  • Comment number 83.

82 - Sorry Ewan - didn't think it was a typo thought it was an actual pawn and automatically thought of a pawn in chess. I can be such a tube at times.

Sorry again - didn't mean to offend!

  • Comment number 84.

    Afternoon....and waves to Rebecca :D

Well i've posted up chapter eighteen and there is Evil in it. #grin.

    Link as follows :) http://www.fanfiction.net/s/7389626/18/Fine_Again

No idea when the rest will follow though, hope you like it. Now i really must get on with that annoying thing called...real...life?

Later bloggers! :) whether you be were-bloggers, ghost-bloggers or vamp-bloggers or something as yet undetermined ;)

  • Comment number 85.

Hello fellow bloggers and mods! I didnt know we had a new webmistress either so hello Rebecca! :)

Hope everyone is enjoying their weekend, and what a way to start the weekend eh? Explosive!

Well, what an interesting blog! Lots to think about and lots to look forward to.

Between the info of online content being released everyday for the new series and the S4 episode titles being released on SFX its really starting to whet my appetite indeed!

I have to say, when everything with Aidan leaving went down and the end of the last series I was devastated and honestly wasnt sure if i would continue watching, sure I would give it a chance with the first few episodes but honestly didnt see how our beloved bh could live on. And I was right, it wont live on. But I was also wrong as its will most definitely be different, but also by the sounds of it equally brilliant. So while I will still mourn the loss of our beloved Mitchell and George, I look forward to meeting the new characters and bringing bh in a new direction. So hats off to you Lord Toby, you seem to really have pulled this one out of the bag... *salutes*

On another note, we seem to be hearing a lot about Damien Malony as Hal lately, but not much is being said about Andrew Gower as Cutler anymore? Did I miss something? Is he still in bh4??

    @stereo

about the Cutler character, we have somewhere in previous blogs been given a spoiler... of some sort

as we would meet a recently turned vampire having problem to adjust to new lifestyle, is it Cutler? which would make him a one-off but it seems he is part of the team so???

anyhow I recommend reading on FF the most excellent FF written sometimes ago by Whitehare about BarryIsland and all kind of brilliant
have a look at it and be ready for season 4, hoping LT read her fiction and shamelessly made it his...

    86 - Mermaid-blogger? Wonder who'd want to be a mermaid-blogger then? :-)

Me, well I'll just be a *stupid blogger*

    @SAINT

Thanks for the ff info, I have indeed read a lot of the fanfic, including Whitehare, and do agree that they are most excellent :)

I was just wondering as when the news of Cutler broke he was pegged as a series regular and AT's replacement, but now seems to have been replaced by Damien Molony's Hal....

    @sasha

sshhh. It is a surprise for you-know-whom!

    @stereo

Loads of info are in fact given out if one hears them in previous seasons

The supernatural hostel mentionned by Nina with at least ... 10 bedrooms for guest / see scene of G calling 'Basil' we see 10 keys on the left of the pic

    The 'war' ongoing

Cutler may be there with Hal. Afterall, if Mitchell can be friends with Ivan and Carl why not Cutler and Hal... Herrick said 'changing' just liberated your personnality. Why decent people can't be decent vampires. Some RL dogs can be adorable pets , some need to be put down as vicious. Both are still carnivorous.

Cutler can co-exist with Hal like Richard can co-exist with Wyndham/ by the way which is the right spelling, help!

    @sage_in_oz

the picture shows on the right G getting some stakes ready, pic showing a less glummy George than the one shown on 'characters' not smiling but not 'as bad', Damien Molony standing up by Annie, Annie same one size fits all grey outfit, very smart re-writing of famous 'grey ladies' ghost concept: her is a modernized shroud , Molony in black ' a la Mitchell' but a shorter leather jacket with buttoned up top; reminding of but different than Mitchell. On Annie left, standing in his father long coat Tom and a long stake, but not the very long carved one
then in the background a young man who seems to be in the same position as is G
BOTH sitting by modern tables with other thngs on said tables but I cant open it more will have to wait till magazine is officially out
they are in a building with large glass windows with cafe painted to be read from the outside
I cant read the printed material, but there is another smaller pic with annie speaking to a man, ears suggestive of George with blue fleece and something in between them/ object? never seen this pic before

my impression is that G sitting scene is near the seaside and is holding a stake and a crucifix, the window glass has new management painted on it but no other table?

new annie pic same background with daramatic sunset but other tables this time with same blue lamp that sits on that unknown character

doing by best, but sadly aware falling short of expectations

Ewan - oh Ewan.................do you still make videos (it was you wasn't it?).
Anyhoo heard some music which made me think of you (don't get worried, honestly nothing to worry about) as thought it would be perfect for one of your videos. Anyway - are you still doing that?

92 - One for Nina and one for becoming human. Now have started 13 others but can't focus on a single one.

    Morning / Afternoon everyone!

Shiny new blog *jumping for joy* can’t wait for all the wonderful things coming up. Fingers crossed hoping the many of us outside the UK will be able to enjoy all those goodies as well.

Hi BH blog mistress Rebecca thanks for getting the ball rolling.

Trying for months to ignore all the rumors that Sinead won’t be in S4 but it’s looking more and more likely :’(. I’m afraid by the end of episode one I’ll be shaking my head in disbelief muttering, say it isn’t so Toby say it isn’t so.

93 - Are they all BH related? Music was Born to Die by Lana del Ray (I think that's her name). It is super and would be perfect for a video. Just saying :-)

97 - Most of them as for the song I've seen it in a multifandom vid that does include Mitchell and I can see it working,
However I've chosen something older for my attempt at a Mitchell vid. When it's finished.

AT LAST - a new blog - way, way exited now. Looking forward to all the new characters but will miss Mitchell and will mourn the coming loss of George. No mention of Nina (that's interesting) - what about all those wolf puppies they are going to have.

Have wiped the last ten minutes of the last episode from my mind and decided to send Mitchell to South America to live with Carl. Keeps me happy and ready to move on. Otherwise it makes me feel bad when I do a rewatch - cos I keep thinking "George is gonna stake you" when I see them together. Think about episode 1 of season 1 and how happy they were together - makes me sad.
