JASON WATKINS ON ACTING

Since Aidan, Russell, Lenora and Sinead have all given us their acting tips in the past we thought it was only fair that Jason Watkins let us in on his secrets too.

What a fitting time it is to be discussing the subject, as only now can we fully appreciate Jason's full range of acting talents. Recently he's taken Herrick from doddery-uncle-looking-for-the-toilet levels of innocence to serial-murderer-hellbent-on-world-domination-who-will-then-probably-kick-your-dog-when-he's-finished levels of nastiness.

The man is truly a genius.

But what's next for Herrick now he's back to his old self and left Nina's life in the balance? Tune in to the Being Human series finale this Sunday at 9pm on BBC Three to find out...

but I no can see it? :(

  • Comment number 2.

OMG! OMG! I was first? really? me? first? Me who can't see it cause BBC has rules? I know Mr. Pilling wants me to see it. I have cupcakes.

  • Comment number 3.

Very good to see this at last Herrick returns to being Herrick and the master of villainy himself tells us how he does it.

    Thanks muchly

  • Comment number 4.

All hail the genius that is Mr Watkins

  • Comment number 5.

What I want to know is, was Herrick acting like he didn't know who he was so he could infiltrate the group, or did he really not know who he was until the hunger for blood made him kill and then that new strength from the blood brought it all back?

  • Comment number 6.

    Hail Herrick, evil genius

  • Comment number 7.

Zoya: Total genius. He is such a powerful actor. I love seeing him. He also plays creepy in a subservient, slimy way too..seen him on TV in something a while ago. He's so nice and angelic looking which of course you can really use if you play a villain. It makes you so much more menacing and unpredictable as a character. Thinking nasty thoughts whilst looking so innocent with a sweet smile....I prefer Mitchell's brand of nasty myself but then, I am biased!

  • Comment number 8.

Jason Watkins is fabulous as Herrick. Waiting with bated breath to see what nastiness he gets up to on Sunday.

  • Comment number 9.

Jason Watkins - that man is pure brilliance. :D

Thanks for a new blog BHP, can I be cheeky and ask for more please? x

I even put a kiss there and not even my pals get that in texts haha!

  • Comment number 10.

Jason Watkins - fantastic - no-one else could have made Herrick so tricky and evil and funny. Will he survive the end of S3?? Will Lord Toby really kill him twice? It would have to be a stake this time? Bet JW would love that!

  • Comment number 11.

I adore Jason Watkins!...Toby Whithouse is absolutely right when he says that Jason portrays villains like noone else....part of the huge success of Being Human is that Herrick is so believable in all his many guises. Great acting tips Jason.

This clip reminds me of something I meant to ask on the previous blog....in that flashback with Mitchell ( tombservice!)...why did Herrick not want Mitchell to go near him...was he wanting to stay clear of Mitchell's blood lust?...did he think that he would be drawn into it? ( but it didn't stop him drinking the girl's blood)...was he angry with Mitchell for keeping the girl alive for so long?

Saw the cupcakes bribery ( sorry..I meant tempting presents...)for Mr P on previous blog....good attempt guys!...although personally I really don't want to know anything more about eps 8 until Sunday.

  • Comment number 12.

celticgrace....I think Herrick's time is finally up in eps 8 and yeh I'm thinking it's puff into a cloud of smoke this time!

  • Comment number 13.

Dorina: (11) Hi there! Herrick was angry with Mitchell because he tried to recruit the girl...he wanted company, so he must have been lonely in that world in order to disobey Herrick's specific order for him not to recruit. Something to do with the plans Herrick had in mind, or the old ones, I forget! He just wanted someone his 'own age' to be with. Ivan was right...an appalling existence.

  • Comment number 14.

11 - my take on it was that Herrick was keeping Mitchell from turning anyone (maybe because you can only be an heir if you haven't recruited anyone? Why he made such a big deal of the Old Ones rarely recruiting?) and he was furious that Mitchell had recruited the girl. Herrick says "it doesn't matter now" when M asks him how heirs work, which implied to me that what M had just done had messed things up.

  • Comment number 15.

@Dorina, @anglo- poor lonely Mitchell. I'm volunteering right now to help him out!

  • Comment number 16.

    Dorina - I'm here!

  • Comment number 17.

M is not H heir, but then who is M heir if M ever wanted an heir, and tried during his vamp ys prior to G to get some other company

Loved H innocent uncle Billy wonderfully posh vocabulary

H too good to die , bring it on season 4

  • Comment number 18.

    Thankyou Sir Pilling!

    Jason Watkins is just brilliant.
I was channel surfing the other day and came across the end of 'Tomorrow Never Dies' and spotted Mr Watkins! He had a speaking part on the sub (or stealth boat, whatever it was)

  • Comment number 19.

Dorina and Anglo - Yes, in this clip Herrick didn't want Mitchell recruiting the girl....BUT, when I went back and re-watched the start of series 1 ep5 - where Herrick is telling this story at the funeral parlour...he says that the girl is coming by later...so she must've been recruited. Either that or another continuity error. Ewan.....any thoughts?

Oh, great blog video by the way. Jason Watkins is fabulous and I just love Herrick because he's just so evil!

Can't believe we're nearly at the end of series 3. I'll be very sad when it ends....

  • Comment number 20.

19 - yes, he was angry with Mitchell because he hadn't wanted Mitchell to recruit her, but Mitchell had gone ahead and done it anyway.

  • Comment number 21.

Absolutely love Jason Watkins...aka Herrick. Loved his soft vulnerable side, but sooo glad the old Herrickis back. Just why oh why did he have to stab our lovely Nina? :-(

  • Comment number 22.

19 - In the beginning of the scene Herrick says "I told you not to recruit her." That was the reason for the severity of the face pounding and it was server remember there was a definite dent.

  • Comment number 23.

22 - was supposed to be to 18

  • Comment number 24.

cupcakes are all over the wall. I am curled up like a heap of snot and tears on the floor.

Ewan. I need you. Please. Youtube link. Can't function. Not computing.

Thank you Mr Pilling though, I am grateful for your hard work today. Sorry I wasted all those cupcakes. I just lost it there. I knew I shouldn't have got out of bed today.

  • Comment number 25.

21 - 'Cause he's Herrick the (illegitimately born). Plus to do otherwise would make him seem soft and if he is to re-establish himself he can't be seen as week.

  • Comment number 26.

ewan please, youtube link. I'm loosing it, new blog and i can't watch it!!!!

  • Comment number 27.

24 +26 Searching will post when it's found.

  • Comment number 28.

25 ewan and made a fantastic scene ofcourse. Not that I love watching people get stabbed, brilliant how we were left thinking for just a second that he would leave her.

  • Comment number 29.

27 - Thank you Ewan, I am always so grateful to you and I know I don't always say it because I don't have time, but it means so much as I am the most useless individual on youtube and the blog just doesn't stream properly for me.

  • Comment number 30.

Thank you Mr P. Need address now to send all the cupcakes!

  • Comment number 31.

Was the Herrick clip in response to the cupcakes....? ;-)

  • Comment number 32.

30 - yes Gingernut, except not the ones I just destroyed (24), we do need an address. cupcakes for the Blog God... although a second preview would still be nice!

  • Comment number 33.

31 - hi purplerach! I do rather suspect that Mr Pilling had Herrick ready to go live anyway, but maybe the cupcakes made him feel valued?!

  • Comment number 34.

    Julia...hello!

thanks for all the info on the reason Herrick cross with Mitchell...joooos...clever girl for remembering that link to series 1...I'd remembered the joke but not the fact that she had been recruited.

SAINTIXE56...the whole thing about having an heir is interesting and puzzling at the same time. I've seen previous ideas about how the appointed heir has, at the very least, to have been recruited by the vampire in question...so Cara had been recruited by Herrick and he made her his heir ( I'm guessing he would have chosen Mitchell if Mitchell hadn't tried to give up on the blood). The way things are going....it's not looking to me like Herrick is going to give up his secret.

  • Comment number 35.

The banality of evil. He's right of course. If card carrying loons all behaved like card carrying loons there'd be none of those interviews with shocked neighbours and workmates when Brian in Accounts is unmasked as an axe murderer.

Brilliance, Mr W, brilliance. You scare the bejeezus out of me and mine.

  • Comment number 36.

    Jason is the master!!
    All hail evil Herrick!!! :-D

  • Comment number 37.

33- Hi Rosie! ...and that is of course what we bloggers are here for to make the BH team feel the value of what they do!

Wishing you a speedy recovery- do you have a good plan for Sunday @ 10.01pm?
If it all ends badly and you're still feeling poorly I worry for your wellfare!

  • Comment number 38.

LOL 35 now you've got me hearing AT saying "JAY-sus" in my head. The voices in my head keep talking to me...

Actually, if they talked in AT's voice that wouldn't be bad at all...

  • Comment number 39.

    (15) RealMitchell...let's form an orderly queue...!

  • Comment number 40.

37 - hullo! Thank you for the get well wishes! Plan for Sunday @ 10.01pm is usually clamber into bed I have to confess! I am useless after 10pm and the blog moves far too fast for my tired head to follow it all.

On the Sunday night fingernail-biting front, this is slighty bizarre and sick, but if there is a forum for it, it must be here... I don't bite my fingernails, but I do bite my fingers when I'm stressed; I make them bleed and suck them. I've done it since I was about three. I love the taste of blood. I really need to refocus on cupcakes...

  • Comment number 41.

11 - sorry Dorina, for missing your comment earlier. I would happily forego an additional preview, so long as Sunday was today. and I wasn't bored and ill at home with nothing else to think about. You do make a good point.

  • Comment number 42.

In three days the nation holds it's collective breath or at least the part of the nation with taste and discretion as.

    Will Nina Live?
    Will George kill Mitchell?
    How far will Herrick go?
    An old one.
Annie fights Lia and her end game.

    pressure much?

  • Comment number 43.

    I love Herrick.

  • Comment number 44.

@39 Dorina- spit spot now, single file- no squashing the cupcakes. Am now available for weddings, barmitvahz, end of series communal blurtingness and general banter on twitter RealMitchell1 :)

  • Comment number 45.

42 - which is why, Ewan, my brain feels like it is going to explode. What on earth will happen?!?!

  • Comment number 46.

45 - I don't know I'm not important enough to get a preview. Still less than 72 hours now.

  • Comment number 47.

Isn't it just exquisite- the pain of the tension? What we have to think of, I suppose is that we still have an episode to look forward to...... goes and hides in corner.

  • Comment number 48.

Was listening to Nemesis by Shriekback today and thinking it would be a good BH soundtrack song. Quite apart from the something-something-something-E-something-something-S connection, some of the lyrics are apt. "Very little fruit is forbidden. Sometimes we wobble, sometimes we're strong. But you know evil is an exact science. Being carefully, correctly wrong."

Any other songs they *should* have used?

  • Comment number 49.

@ Ewan, I just love the calming influence you exude to us mere mortals. Have a party ring.

  • Comment number 50.

right then dear friends on the blog. I am to bed. All the cupcake adventures have exhausted this lump of virus and I can take no more.

46 - Ewan, you're important to us. If I were BH, I'd give you a preview.

sweet dreams and thank you to all you lovely people who went off on the mad divergence of cupcake campaigning. It's been hilarious fun.

Oh Barry Pilling of the Blog Godliness, thank you for bearing with us and humouring us! You spoil us. And I would buy you cupcakes if I knew where to send them.

  • Comment number 51.

50 - it was fun, w_r. We must spam twitter again some time. Or maybe flashmob the pink house.

  • Comment number 52.

Does anyone know who sings "The Man From Galilee" (if that's the title?) from Episode 7? I think it plays when Mitchell's going about the house and running into all those werewolves, but it could be later.

  • Comment number 53.

Hi Ewan, thanks for the info. I don't know how you remember everything! How many times have you watched each ep now? I'm doing a full series 3 re-watch (had previously seen each ep at least twice). I watched ep2 earlier and there was so much I'd missed ( or just forgotten!). Didn't notice that Adam called George the "FA cup"! . How very rude!

  • Comment number 54.

53 - I just remember things long term. Short term not so much. Funny how his description after the comparison is surprisingly accurate of their first time together.

  • Comment number 55.

Prodigys 'Omen' came on the radio today, it would have been great to see that used in a trailer for this series...
    "It's an omen

Now the writing's on the wall
    It won't go away
    It's an omen
You just run out of automation"

  • Comment number 56.

52 - do you mean when he's walking up the hill smoking? If so it's Detroit Social Club - God's Gonna Cut You Down and I've been listening it loads for the last couple of days. It's a real brain worm.

  • Comment number 57.

Just scrolled past my own post (51) and read "spam fritter". Lordy, I need sleep LOL.

  • Comment number 58.

Interpol Lights would have been a good soundtrack to M's inner turmoil and his relationship with A.

    All that I see
    show me your ways
teach me to meet my desires...with some grace

    All that I fear
    don´t turn away
and leave me to plead in this hole of a place...what if I never break
    estuary won´t you take me
    far away

  • Comment number 59.

No one else has mentioned it, we all need sleep! ;-)

  • Comment number 60.

58 happyhippy says alot about a show when the fans hear a song and immediately think of certain scenes or characters. Brilliant. :-)

  • Comment number 61.

    52 it's a Johnny Cash cover I think

  • Comment number 62.

60- :) love music, and I have really enjoyed listening to songs lately and thinking immediately how good it would fit in certain scenes in BH, it helps me get from sunday to sunday! I should check out the BH soundtrack.

  • Comment number 63.

56 - I think that must be it. Thank you! It's obviously been stuck in my head too. Lol.

  • Comment number 64.

55 just had a listen to Omen, not heard it in a long time. It fits perfectly! It's quite chaotic

  • Comment number 65.

Is Herrick sat in a wheelchair?! Hahahahaha - I dont know why, but that is brilliant

  • Comment number 66.

I still think the WSB is metaphorical - it represents M's love for G and his little werewolf family (I predict furry baby lives!). I think M will sacrifice himself for George's sake (to save Nina's soul?)

  • Comment number 67.

Jason Watkins is truly a master of his craft. He deserves a huge script to land on his door step and push him up into the upper echelons that his talent deserves. Obviously when he's no longer Herrick of course.

If his performances as Herrick go unnoticed it would be a crime!

  • Comment number 68.

Great rapport between him and AT too. In the behind the scenes things they seemed to enjoy the scenes they had together.

  • Comment number 69.

64 happyhippy yeah it'd be perfect with scenes from BT20 and all the fighting that's been going on this season.

I was listening to the Queen of the Damned soundtrack, don't really like the film but the music was done by Jonathan Davis (of Korn) and its great. All vampire themed songs and about different problems/issues that go with it. He got different artists (marilyn mason, linkin park, deftones) to sing the songs as there were legal issues or something. Well worth checking out, just for the lyrics alone.

  • Comment number 70.

    69. will do, cheers I'm always looking for new stuff. you should check out The Airborne Toxic Event a song called Innocence. I must say I have enjoyed the tracks they have used this series, somebody on the production team has good taste.

  • Comment number 71.

Same here, thanks for that I'll deff have a listen. My favourites from the WORD album are 'System' , 'Forsaken', 'Redeemer', and 'Change'. :-)

And yes they have very good taste!

  • Comment number 72.

that should say 'q.o.t.d' not word, damn phone!

  • Comment number 73.

    @68 whitehare-
I happened to be taking a look at earlier stuff yesterday. One of the clips was Aiden's diary from the end of series 1? when Lauren and Seth meet their end. he rapport and banter between them all was obvious and that they were all having a ball! Nice clip with Jason and Aiden too....Happy days.

Hi all, back from the raf and scaf of humanity

A>>> they are going to put me in a room with no key
M>>> looking at the sandy beach of a tropical island, but no human presence on the wallposter
Old one very angry at M
    Lia set on revenge
M calling himself a coward because when he does not feed, he sees the faces of all the people he killed

Old one to leave M alone w/no human being on an island, cant feed, perfect room without a key, perfect prison, punishment, possibly removing his signature canines so really cant feed ie a perfect hell/death sentence> only glimmerof hope annie standing by him

hoping she brought sunglasses, sunshade, sunblokers and will explain why M looks like rbinson crusoe during season 4

  • Comment number 76.

All I know is over here across the pond, we are only on episode 3, and John Mitchell is the hottest vampire since Bill Compton from true blood! Love you , Aidan !

  • Comment number 77.

Jason Watkins has shown fantastic acting ability throughout BH - especially this series, believably dotty one second, then really scary the next. Hope Herrick's still around if there's another series!

  • Comment number 78.

@74 -Doh, shouldn't have posted song lyrics. :-/
Lyrics to the song 'Redeemer', seem fitting for Mitchell at the mo.

  • Comment number 79.

found on youtube- orry no link but humour me

a snippet from that BBC film about Hattie Jacques, with AT and really his agent should advise him about bad hair day.

  • Comment number 80.

    Morning all.
Slightly disappointed you didn't reach 2000 on the last blog. Slackers. LOL.

  • Comment number 81.

I nearly forgot - I actually dreamed about BH last night! (How sad is that)
I can reveal that the WSB is...

Someone completely new my brain invented!!!!!

  • Comment number 82.

80-sage_from_oz lol don't worry I'm sure that'll happen on Sunday!
Good morning to you too, and good night! :-)

  • Comment number 83.

    65. yes i was wondering if it was a wheelchair or possibly a commode?

    68. AT does seem to be a fan..he mentioned JW in his acting tips

what a lovely man JW seems.. in fact have yet to see any cast/ crew that dont seem down to earth/ lovely people...that includes you BP!

  • Comment number 84.

does anyone know if there will be a series four

  • Comment number 85.

    Not yet.

  • Comment number 86.

I heard this season ends on a cliffhanger note, so there should be a season 4 pending.

  • Comment number 87.

Morning all - #86 - there has to be a S4 for all our sanity, but I think they're keeping us in suspense deliberately and will release news of Series 4 at 10.01 on Sunday. I've never known a week so long and have been totally unable to think about anything else at all!
(BTW I'm so glad that this is a forum for 'adults', albeit demented obsessed ones. The majority of those commenting on the Facebook BH page are driving me crazy.)

  • Comment number 88.

-- As an ex-Smallville fan one of the things the fans did when they'd had a favorite character to die off was send box loads of plain or engraved pencils to the network heads or producers saying they want her back. We could just buy pencils and send them by the boxload to TW etc, an address to his BBC3 office? with a note asking him we're giving him the pencils to write another Series of Being Human if they won't give him the funds.

-- I used to not the Herrick character/portrayal when I first checked out Being Human to prep for the US Syfy version. But after truly getting 'it' and into the show, also doing many rewatches and then seeing his performances for S3, I must say I was very rude and wrong. Jason is excellent.

  • Comment number 89.

    Good Morning everyone

I don't think my brain can process anymore WSB speculation. All I can focus on now is please come back BH and please come back Aidan.

Or maybe it's just too early for more theories. I need breakfast.

  • Comment number 90.

    Morning, you all sweetcheeks!
and long life to the cupcakes who survived.

betting £1 that we shall know there is a season 4 at the end of sunday episode of becoming human- yes sheer torture w/our nerves

but in 1week+2d and some hours we shall all be signing praise to Lord Toby

by the way, we really should do something about that tee-shirt we mnention like a proud dysplay of our addict/errr../admiration/enthousiasm about BH that plus being a sure recognizable symbol/signal of recognition of like-wise mminded kindred spirit
why not about holding some sort of mini convention sometime this summer?

if so would appreciate very much to be told ahead- as needing to fit date around medical meetings/rotas/oncalls/and all the delightful what-have-yous of "must attend reunion" that litters a gp schedule

  • Comment number 91.

I love and loathe Herrick in equal measure.

    What a fantastic actor!

  • Comment number 92.

teddylupin i'm with you on the complete love and hate of herrick. he's such a brilliant character and jason watkins is amazing.
the whole show is amazing. they've had mitchell and all of us driven crazy by the WSB since episode 1.
    bring on series 4!

  • Comment number 93.

First of all, good morning everyone! raise and shine little bloggers!

    90 @ SAINTIXE56

Now, I totally support the T-shirt idea and I know you'll love my idea:

Let's start the "MALe": Mitchell's Adoration League

I would get my T-shirt pronto!

If anybody else feels like we should be inveting more acronyms for the BH world, unleash your obsession! I could have these T-shirts in different colours...hmmm...

Gotta work, back in a while.

  • Comment number 94.

    #90 Wonderful idea - simple black T-shirt with BH-OCD on it peut-être?

  • Comment number 95.

put me down for a t-shirt. the black with BH-OCD is perfect. might have to go for a MALe one as well. any chance of purple?

That's what so sad and woobie about Mitchell is that you can feel his struggles, needs and weaknesses even when he fails and resorts to bad and evil for a short term solution. This scene and his attempts at keeping human female partners for the short term for crutches shows how Annies is his perfect mate. She won't ever trigger his instinct to kill her eventually, she inspires him to fight and stay good, she will be with him for eternity. It makes me cry every time I think about it. :-{......

I'm creating my own tee as the out and proud Bonobo fan of BH and cast!

  • Comment number 98.

Yay for the wonderful Mr Watkins. He's so right, Herrick is that much more creepy because he's quite cheerful. Unnerving, much.

I think I have a serious obsession with BH. I'm trying to write an essay on Chinese weapons and I actually typed the phrase '... like very deadly furniture.'

    I need help.

  • Comment number 99.

megancyber (96) totally agree with your comments on mitchell's pain. it comes through loud and clear. that's why we love him. and about annie and him. the scenes with him and her are so tender (mostly!)

  • Comment number 100.

Like the idea of purple or black - though I fear my family might send the men in white coats! Love the idea of mini convention too.
I've seen 'Bonobo' a couple of times but have googled and they're a band???
