Local songwriter Paul Shevlin triumphed at the 'Next Brit Thing Awards' at Indigo 2 in London yesterday, winning the opportunity to record at the world famous Abbey Road studios. 'The Next Brit Thing Award' is a national music competition for 11 - 19 year olds backed by the UK music industry, The Brit Awards and the Government.

The competition, in it's inaugural year, was reduced to thirteen contestants from thousands of entries from throughout the UK and was judged, on the night, by the four members of McFly as well as Laura Wright, Noah Stewart and Mike Smith. 'The Next Brit Thing' organisers said on their website.

'Belfast's Paul Shevlin wowed the crowd with his effortless piano skills and instantly catchy melodies. Paul will now get to record at the legendary Abbey Road Studios, and as he's a big Beatles fan he's pretty chuffed with this!'
