What happened: The Crawdaddy tent is absolutely rammed for McMorrow's set. Team ATL have never seen as many middle aged women in one place. The main attraction here of course is the songwriter's utterly stunning voice: he could probably sing the phone book and it would break our hearts.The more upbeat numbers keep the crowd focused for the most part but when things get a little quieter the usual crowd murmurs threaten to drown out the entire band. It doesn't help that the band's "new toys" provide technical problems: there's feedback cropping up in several songs and in a performance as intricate as this it hampers this set significantly. The most telling example is "Red Dust": the organ refuses to work, so McMorrow strips things down to just a solo piano performance of the track. On record it's superb, but with all the problems and the layers taken away it doesn't have the same magic.
Different Class: It may be a little predictable but "We Don't Eat" was an absolute treat. It's just one of those great festival closers, building layer by layer before finally exploding in front of our eyes. Despite all the technical issues it's a delight.
I Don't Like Mondays: The technical difficulties distract the crowd and the performance does suffer as a result. McMorrow tries his best not to appear annoyed but to be honest, it annoys us. We know what he can do with a captive audience but it just doesn't happen today.
