Novosibirsk

Novosibirsk is Russia's third-largest city, after Moscow and Saint Petersburg, and the largest city of Siberia with a population of around 1.5 million inhabitants.

The city was founded in 1893 as the future plane of a Trans-Siberian Railway bridge crossing Siberian river Ob and was named Novonikolayevsk.

Novonikolayevsk began reconstruction in 1921 because of the Lenin's New Economic Policy. And got its new name, Novosibirsk, in 1926.

The fast growth of the city prompted the construction of a hydroelectric power station with a capacity of 400.000 kilowatts, causing the creation of a giant water reservoir, known as the Ob Sea. The reservoir is 160 km long and up to 20 km wide. It is a very popular place in summer time to go swim and have a sunbath on a sandy beach.

On September 2, 1962, Novosibirsk reached a population of one million. At that time, it was the youngest city in the world with over a million people. It took around 17 years to reach this number.

In 1979 we started to build underground. The first line was opened in 1985. Last year we got a new line by the way:)

There is one interesting fact which I got to know recently...before 1920 left side of the city as regards to Ob river and right side of the city were in different time zone. So on the right side morning began for one hour earlier:)

Novosibirsk is a home for 11 universities, 8 academies, 13 institution and 14 branches of other Russian cities institutes.

Siberia continue to reveal some new aspects and the great numbers referred to people and spaces gave me a little confusion thinking at the small city in Italy where I live. Thinking also to the Trans Siberian railway I remeber, if I'm not wrong, that it arrives at Vladivostock: the complete trip should be an experience of life.

    Hello Olga,
I think that Siberia is very interesting and mysterious place of the world where human being remains.Novosibirsk ...one more Russian difficult name.I would like to tell you some interesting things.

First of all I want to make clear that few years ago I tried to learn Russian language myself.Today I have almost forgotten it.But this time few simple words are come in my mind such as da-da(yes), niyat-niyat(not),maat(mother), braat(brother) etc.I confidently don't say -- I wrote these Russian words here are correct or not. But these words are similar to an ancient Indian language Sanskrit. For example - Maat writes as Mata(mother), Braat as Bhrata(Brother). What are you feel? One of my closed friend loves to read Russian fictions but always mistaking pronunciation of the name of Actors or places(written in Russian).

Thanks for nice information about Novosibirsk.I like it.I am looking more surprised about your native land.

    Hello Olga:

Very nice to read your post again. It is very particular description for the city of Novosibirsk. We can learn the history, population, transportation, and other stuff from your post.

Russia is really quite mysterious country for me. Everything I've known maybe it is the largest country.

That is just a joke. Actually, I know a lot concerning Russia, it is a very ancient country. Several centuries ago, many Russian lived in heavily forested area against the incursion of nomadic tribes.
However, It had been formed a superpower country named Soviet Union. During the period of World war Ⅱ.It played a very important role in this war, which was known as the Great Patriotic War. Finall they defeat Nazi Germany.

Russia has very glory scientific and artistic achievement. It launched the world’s first artificial satellite in 1950’s. One of the most greatest composers Tchaikovsky was famous all over the world.

Modern times, the most famous person in Russia must be the ex-president Vladimir Putin , who is acting the Prime Minister at the moment. I know that he had worked in KGB, the security force of former Soviet Unite. As president he gained a reputation as a clever and ruthless political operator.
The martial art of judo is Putin’s favorite sports, and he is the first leader to move forward into the advanced levels. I really admire him very much.

Hope can have a chance to visit Russia, but not in winter. I am quite fear the winter in Russia.

I live in a little and pacific city from interior of state Ceará, called Russas. With a population approximately 70.000 people, the city developed around the river called Jaguaribe, along of the years. The climate here ever gyrate around +30 degrees for almost all year, at the moment here, we are on period winter time that must to go until June more or less. Big part of the people here works with agriculture and another part with commerce, and the population is much religious and has much faith in God, and they’re very hospitable too.

    Hugs and happiness!

Thank you for your hometown details.
I must admit that my geographical idea of Siberia was totally wrong. I've just looked it up and I found that is huuuuuuge. Honestly I always thought that Siberia were to a large extent 'only' the easter part of Russia country whereas it's geographic border apparently starts close to the Ural mountains and finishes to the Pacific Ocean... Ummmmbelievable.
I also thought that Novosibirsk were in the North East Russia. To be precise, I thought it were in Yakutia somewhere ... but I was again completely wrong!
I clearly must study geography more!

Bye the way, is there any CAE student around ???

    Byee
