Mario Vargas Llosa from Peru to the world

"At first I thought it was a joke", said the writer, Mario Vargas Llosa, when he heard the Swedish Academy's announcement: "you have won the Literature nobel prize 2010".
It’s, definitely, the news of the year. “The peruvian writer Mario Vargas Llosa is awarded today the Nobel Prize in Literature 'for his cartography of the structures of power and his trenchant images of the individual's resistance, revolt and defeat.'

The news flashed round the world. Today, when I woke up. I turned on the television and Mario Vargas Llosa was being interviewed on the radio. “It was surprising, I didn’t expect to receive any prize”, said.
In Peru, everyone comment this great news, on internet, all social networks are published news about Mario Vargas Llosa; radio, television are dealing to get an interview. It’s really impressive all the media coverage.
Mario Vargas Llosa the journalist...
He was born in Arequipa (a province in sourthern Lima). Then he lived In Lima and Studied at military Leoncio Prado School. In his book “La ciudad y los perros” (The City and the dogs), 1962. He tell us about his experiencie as studient and how he could survived in that school.
In Lima he studied Laws at San Marcos University, in those times he had a revolutionary ideology, he was sympathizer of Cuban revolution, although after some years he changed his ideology to liberal right.
Not many people know, that Mario Vargas Llosa before to be a famous writer, he was a journalist. At the age of 23 he worked in “La Cronica” newspaper. This experience was determinated for him, because it was inspiration to write “Conversación en la Catedral” (Conversation in the Cathedral), 1969. This is one of the best books, since my point of view the best. This book analize what happen behind political situation, sordid stories between yellow journalism, and cabarets and miserable people. It was monumental.
From the books to the films...
Did you know that Keanu Reeves was a character in a film based in a novel of Mario Vargas Llosa? Yes It did. The film is “tune tomorrow”,(1990) and is based in the book “La tía Julia y el escribidor” (Aunt Julia and the Scriptwriter), 1977. It was a polemic book. This is a partly autobiographical story of the relationship between a young Mario and his aunt, a beautiful, sexy and sophisticated woman older than him.
The popular “Neo” stars as “Varguitas”. (Mario Vargas Llosa was know as Varguitas). Unfortunately this film not was good for the critics, but it’s a good choose to see today!
“Pantaleon y las visitadoras”. (Captain Pantoja and the Special Service) was another film based in a book of the same name, this relate the life of a military Captain Pantoja who has to look after of prostitutes and accommodate the desires of the men of the Peruvian armed forces in the jungle. It was two versions, one first in 1975 and the second in 1999 and It was directed by the peruvian Francisco Lombardi in 1999. It had pretty succesful.
“La fiesta del chivo” 1996, (The Feast of the Goat) This book is based on the dictatorship of Rafael Trujillo, takes place in the Dominican Republic. It was made into film in 2006 and it was directed by Luis Llosa, novelist’s cousin.
The writer who wanted to be president...
In 1990 Mario Vargas Llosa was candidate for peruvian president. He could have been president, but the History did not wanted. He represented the center right, the other candidate was Alberto Fujimori (today arrested by corruption). Finally, At the end of this Alberto Fujimori won the elections.
Finally today justice was served and Mario Vargas Llosa is right now on the Olympus of world writers. Peruvian people will never forget this global event.
In a recentrly interview. He said: “I am proud to be Peruvian as Machu Picchu”.
