Today’s MPFree is an absolute delight, mixing analogue recorded warmth with Brazilian coolness and 70s synths.
We really don’t know where to begin with Tim Maia. First of all, we’re so glad to be bringing you a track such as this, and playing it on a station that gladly accepts such sounds. Secondly, Tim’s story is confused, mad and you just couldn’t make it up. Check out the full story here, narrated by Devendra Banhart no less. He was described as one of the great soul artists of all time finding fame in the 70s revolutionising Brazilian popular music. He topped the charts for 24 weeks, lived in a world embroiled with drugs and machine guns, he recorded with James Brown’s band and destroyed the tapes, he had 120 law suits filed for and against him, he then joined the cult only to leave shortly after his girlfriend had an affair with the cult leader. As we said, you just couldn’t make it up.
