It's been a laid back, chilled week of MPFrees in the main, but your final offering takes things up a notch and comes from Brooklyn singer-songwriter Sharon Van Etten.

Her new album Tramp is out soon and has been produced by The National's Aaron Dessner. The album is full of contributions from indie types, and this track alone features Aaron and Bryce Dessner from The National, Wye Oak's Jenn Wasner, Matt Barrick of the Walkmen and Doveman's Thomas Bartlett. You'll find the link below.

As for the artwork, this week Lauren asked for photos of snow in honour of Thursday's guest Kate Bush (her album's called 50 Words For Snow incase you're wondering). We opted for this from Adam Jenkins entitled 'Snowy Quilted England'. Thanks:

Here's the tracks:

Lambchop - If Not I'll Just Die

Phenomenal Handclap Band - The Unknown Faces At Father James Park

Alekesam - It's Not You, It's Here

Cass McCombs - The Same Thing

Sharon Van Etten - Serpents

Some tracks may no longer be available for download.

MEMORY TAPES: 25TH NOVEMBER 2011

This week's Memory Tape comes from Andy de Vries, who writes...

"I recently started a long distance relationship with my lovely girlfriend Helly in St Ives. As a long time fan of mixtapes as a romantic gesture, I decided that for her first trip up to see me in London, she needed a musical companion for the 5 hour epic journey.

"So in a hurry I emailed her 15 individual mp3s, a playlist for the correct order to put them in and that she was under strict instructions to arrange them in that order! I would be checking her iPod later on to make sure! What can I say, the flow is everything.

"Don't worry, we're still together 6 months later! It goes from chilled ramping up through indie to dancey, via a brief trip through somewhere African/Jamaican!"

Here's how that journey looks:

Summer Camp - Ghost Train

Laura Marling - Ghosts

Noah And The Whale - 5 Years Time

Little Dragon - Ritual Union

Belle & Sebastian - I'm A Cuckoo

Wild Beasts - All The King's Men

Foster The People - Pumped Up Kicks

Sbtrkt - Wildfire

Tom Vek - A Chore

Yeasayer - O.N.E

Tune-Yards - Bizness

Gil Scott-Heron & Jamie xx - I'll Take Care Of U

Metronomy - The Bay

The 2 Bears - Church

Junior Boys - In the Morning

Friendly Fires - Hawaiian Air

Tata Vega - Get It Up For Love - 12" Version

Breakbot feat. Outlines - Baby I'm Yours

Cassius - Toop Toop

The 2 Bears - Bear Hug

Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Heads Will Roll - A-Trak Remix

Sébastien Tellier - La Ritournelle

Your MPFree today comes from Alekesam; an LA-based group who are getting ready to release their debut album.

That album will be called 'It's Not You, It's Here', but that's where the info ends as they're keen to keep their identity under wraps and everything else as well. At least you have the song:

WildChords (iPad)

WildChords is a nifty new way to learn guitar through the medium of an iPad game. It sees your character rescuing animals, with the key control being you strumming a real guitar at specific points in each level - get the chord and timing right, and you do well. The iPad listens to your strums using its microphone, with levels designed to help you build up from being a novice to an expert fret-wrangler. It's free, but you'll pay for extra levels in the future.

Minecraft - Pocket Edition (iPhone / iPad / Android)

Minecraft is a really popular PC game that's basically Lego for grown-ups - you're in a virtual world made up of blocks, and you use other blocks to build things such as houses, statues etc... But now Minecraft is available on iPhone, iPad and Android letting people build to their heart's content. There's even a soundtrack. And while this may sound very nerdy, Minecraft is one of the most interesting games around at the moment - appealing way beyond the traditional gamegeek audience. It costs £4.99.

Free World (iPhone / Android)

This is an app that takes the social location idea of Foursquare - where you 'check in' to places in the real world - and adds social activism to it. The idea is that you check-in when shopping, choose a brand, and then it posts to Facebook saying you want to know about their supply chain, and whether their manufacturers are using slaves or child labour. It's free.

Your first MPFree of the week sees the return of Lambchop.

Their last studio record was 2008's OH (Ohio) and February next year will see the release of album number 11 called Mr M.

As you'll hear in this early taster of Mr M, the sound Kurt Wagner was going for was, apparently, 'psycho-Sinatra'. Enjoy:

Your final track comes from Little Dragon; a Tycho remix of Little Man to be specific. Tycho is the music project Scott Hansen who's an artist and producer based in San Francisco. You'll find it below with the other tracks from this week.

As for the artwork this week, Lauren asked for, in honour of J Mascis appearing on the EP, photos of dinosaur toys; dinosaur jnrs. if you will.... We opted for this submission from Jamie McKelvie:

The tracks this week are:

La Shark - Magazine Cover

Speech Debelle - Studio Backpack Rap

J Mascis - I've Been Thinking

Damien Jurado - Nothing Is The News

Little Dragon - Little Man (Tycho Remix)

MEMORY TAPES: 18TH NOVEMBER 2011

This week's Memory Tape comes from Angie in Barcelona who, after hearing the feature a couple of weeks ago was inspired to get in touch. We had a run of tales of love which had sad endings, and Angie took it upon herself to buck that trend. Thanks.

Angie picks up the story..."I thought I'd send you mine and my boyfriend Michael's tape. We both moved to Barcelona from the UK about four years ago and met here through our mutual friend Wayne on a night out three years ago.

"When we first got together we realised we both shared a MASSIVE love of music and going to gigs and festivals. We shared similar tastes but also introduced each other to lots of new music as well. In the first few weeks we'd spend all of our days in work sending each other emails with different songs that we loved and then we'd meet after work and go to the beach or the park and play them on our iPod speakers together in the sunshine. As time went on the songs we sent to each other were ones that had special meanings and lyrics that reminded us of each other and it was our way of saying that we were falling in love.

"It wasn't long before we actually said it out loud and we've been inseparable ever since.

"Three years on and many gigs and festivals later we're still really happy together and this summer while we were on holiday in Greece Michael asked me to marry him! We're hoping to get married next year and have a big party at home in Manchester with all of our family and friends and dance to the music that brought us together.

"I saved all of the songs that we sent to each other in those first few weeks/months on a huge email. I've just gone through it and picked out some of our favourites. Hope you like them as much as we do."

We do, and here they are:

Shuggie Otis - Strawberry Letter 23

Animal Collective - The Purple Bottle

The Kinks - This Time Tomorrow

Tunng - Jenny Again

Billy Bragg & Wilco - California Stars

Bright Eyes - First Day Of My Life

King Of The Apps Stuart Dredge returns as your techie guide. Here's what he's dug out for you this week:

8tracks (Android)

Online music playlists service 8tracks has had an iPhone app for a while, but now it's on Android. The idea: browse playlists created and uploaded by other people tagged by topic and mood - sleep, study, chill, sex and more. There are more than 300,000 playlists to choose from.

Shuffler.fm (iPad)

This is the latest music discovery app designed to help you see what new tunes music blogs have been recommending. It's designed to be part music magazine on the iPad, and part streaming radio station: it plays you the songs while showing you the blog posts written about them.

Closet Swap (iPhone)

This app is part of a wider Channel 4 project on sustainable fashion - encouraging people to borrow clothes from friends, or buy them from secondhand shops. The Closet shop site is about uploading photos of your clothes for friends to borrow (it's aimed more at teenage girls), while the app is more about taking a quick photo of something in a shop to find out if friends have anything similar. It also acts as a location-based guide to vintage and secondhand clothing shops.

Your final track comes from Lana Del Rey; or rather Lana Del Rey's Blue Jeans remixed by Penguin Prison (it's all about the penguins at the moment). You'll find the link below with this week's other downloads.

As for the artwork this week, what else could we ask for following our Rainbow-based People's Playlist? That's right; a rainbow. We didn't even have to ask for this one - Sherree sent us this snap which was taken in Cornwall:

Your tracks are:

Loney, Dear - Calm Down

Bouts - We Tried

Electric Guest - American Daydream

Monomono - Make Them Realise

This week's Memory Tape is the story of passing on knowledge to the next generation. The story belongs to Adam, who writes....

"Mix tapes were a huge part of my life and something that will never be the same for the MP3 generation. This mix tape was given to me by my next door neighbour when I was about 12 years old to broaden my musical horizons as I thought music was just Culture Club and Duran Duran at the time. I will always be thankful he took the time.

"About 20 years later I did a similar tape (Well CD) to try and educate a friend of mine who thought music was all Euro pop nonsense."

Indeed. So here's the tape that was made for Adam...

1 - Grandmaster Flash - White Lines

2 - Run DMC - My Adidas

11 - Harry J Allstars - The Liquidator

12 - Prince Buster Al Capone

13 - The Specials - Nite Klub

14 - The Skatalites - You're Wondering Now

...And here's tracklisting of the CD that Adam gave to a friend:

1 - Orbital - Chime

2 - Roni Size Represent - Brown Paper Bag

3 - Olive (Roni Size Mix) - You're Not Alone

4 - Pulp - Sorted For E's and Wizz (Live at Glastonbury)

5 - Willie Mason - Oxygen (Live Glastonbury)

Three more apps go under the microscope of tech-head Stuart Dredge.

Doctor Who Encyclopedia (iPad - £4.99)

Doctor Who geeks can rejoice in an iPad encyclopedia app offering entries for all the characters, aliens, places and objects that have appeared in the world of the Eleventh Doctor Matt Smith - with additional bundles for the previous two (Christopher Ecclestone and David Tennant) available as £4.99 in-app purchases.

Famigo Sandbox (Android - free)

This is a great idea: an app that basically makes your Android smartphone or tablet child-safe - they can only access apps that have been designated as child-friendly by its network of testers (who have chosen 40,000+ so far). The app also provides a weekly report of what apps children have been using for parents - is this a bit spy-like? - and recommends other apps that they might like. It's an example of Android going beyond iPhone/iPad, where there's still no child-safe mode or Kids category on the App Store.

Kinectimals (Windows Phone - £2.29)

Kinectimals is a Windows Phone game that's a sign of things to come: it's designed to link in with the main Kinectimals game for the Xbox 360 console. People play with virtual pets on their phone, unlocking them for use in the main version at home. And this is part of a bigger trend: the idea of playing games at home and then continuing them on the train/bus etc. It's something Microsoft hopes will make its Windows Phones compete with iPhone and Android, anyway.

MEMORY TAPES: 4TH NOVEMBER 2011

Post categories:

Jon Teamlaverne Jon Teamlaverne | 10:00 UK time, Friday, 4 November 2011

We're back to tales of love this week for Memory Tapes, as Hannah Austin explains...

"My memory tape is themed - it's called The Animal Mixtape - (A collection of songs inspired by various animals, great and small"). It was made for me by my girlfriend Nik about a year after we first got together.

We had the most grotesquely romantic honeymoon period when we first got together and must've swapped about 20 mix tapes in the first year, so we started to get a bit more creative with them after a while and do themed tapes.

We've had tonnes of ups and downs since then, have broken up, got back together, moved around etc, but now everything's going really well and we're moving in together in a month! Yay! So it would be really cool if you could play a couple of tracks to celebrate!

It gets a bit tenuous on Side B... Nick Drake? Olivia NEWTon John?! She works in Bristol Zoo now, so it was obviously good practice?!"

Awesome, here's the artwork:

And here's the tracks:

Side A:

The Hot Puppies - The Party

The Hot Puppies - The Drowning Nymph

Eels - I Like Birds

Arctic Monkeys - I Bet That You Look Good on the Dancefloor

Animals - House of the Rising Sun

Underworld - King of Snake

The Go! Team - Panther Dash

The Flaming Lips - This Here Giraffe

Penguin Cafe Orchestra - err I'm not sure which song!

Coco Rosie - Bear Hides and Buffalo

Bob Marley - Buffalo Soldier

America - Horse With No Name

Le Tigre - The The Empty

Side B:

Mr Scruff - Fish

Lamb - Til the Clouds Clear

Nick Drake - Cocaine

Ladytron - Ladybird

Emiliana Torrina - Tuna Fish

Le Tigre - Deceptacon

Mouse on Mars - Yippie

Kos - Put the Crab in the Bucket

Goldfrapp - Let's Get Physical (Olivia Newton John cover) (really?!)

The Ramones - Spiderman Theme

Eels - Fresh Feeling

James Hersch - Aardvarks are our Friends

Infected Mushroom - Cat on Mushrooms

Stuart Dredge; king of the apps, swings by with this week's reviews. For this week's news, listen back to Tuesday's show on the iPlayer.

Shoebox by 1000memories (iPhone)

This is an app for people with a mouldering box of old family photographs and an iPhone. It helps you use the phone's camera to scan the pics and upload them to a digital locker, while also posting them on Facebook if you like.

Zeebox (iPad / mobile web)

This app wants to be your go-to application for social TV, i.e. loafing about on the sofa tweeting. It's part electronic programme guide showing you what's on now and next in the UK, and part social media client - you can see what your friends are watching and saying.

Timmy Time HD (iPad)

The latest children's TV series to get the iPad book-app treatment is Timmy Time: the spin-off from Shaun The Sheep. It's a combination of stories, a baa-keyboard with downloadable sheet music, colouring and voice narration from Josie Lawrence.
