First impressions of the new season
So how was opening day for you? Probably quite eventful if you were at the Coleraine Showgrounds.
Sounded like quite a game, unfortunately I missed it.
It is pretty sad that we now live in an age when players are sent off (I know it was a second yellow) for goal celebrations.

Yes the referee had little choice, and it is not a pop at Brian Turkington, but it seems the people who make the rules are trying to take the passion out of the game.
As for the game that I was watching, Richard Clarke was the star of the show and without doubt is the type of midfield player that Glentoran have been missing.
Crusaders started with a great result against the newly-promoted Portadown team. I just wonder if this is the year Crusaders can push right to the wire.
Anybody out there feeling confident about the new season on the basis of what they saw on Saturday, or anybody who spent the weekend hiding under the duvet after watching their team on Saturday?

Hello, I'm Joel Taggart and I'm the football commentator for BBC Radio Ulster. I get to see lots of matches, but I can't be everywhere. Hopefully you can keep me up to date here with all the big talking points from the games that I miss. You can also debate the big issues from the Irish League, the international team, and anything else that tickles your fancy.

Saturday was a great day for everyone at Glentoran. I’ve never sent eh Glens start the new campaign so brightly following a league title win. While pre-season showed Glentoran supporters how good the youth and fringe players are, it left some people with doubts over the “first eleven”. Well the starting eleven showed why they are the starting eleven on Saturday with a dismantling of a weak Lisburn Distillery. Paul Leeman again showed that Glenn Ferguson is no match for him and Richard Clarke showed everyone what we had seen pre-season, on a competitive stage. With Andy Waterworth, Sean Ward and Shane McCabe all not starting on Saturday, I think we showed just how deep our new streamlined squad is. Satruday left a lot of Glenmenw ith high hopes for the season, but winning it last term was only half the job. Everyone has made that clear since we lifted the Gibson cup in May.

Can't complain about the entertainment on show on Saturday at Coleraine, that's for sure. 4 goals, 2 sendings off and two completely different halves of football. Coleraine showed in the first half how they have the necessary skill and intelligence to play with the best, but seemed to fall apart a little in the second half. We have a young squad, a young manager and things definitely seem to be on the up.
The league is looking more competitive this year, so I'll be happy to see Coleraine in the Top 6 come the split. The Ports are back and despite the defeat on Saturday will be looking to muscle in on our position behind the Big Two.
Also would love another cup run, and that we enjoy ourselves in the Setanta Cup for the first time.

Once again everyone has written off Cliftonville despite a great start at the weekend 1-0 win away to Ballymena, wee Boyceee does it again. This is our year, RED ARMY.

I'm a Glen man and even I disagree with the Linfield player being sent off for celebrating!! Its what the game is about, scoring goals!!!

Great game at Coleraine on Saturday- if only Jeffrey realised that a defence with Noel Bailie in it wont win any leagues any more! Linfield legend but he is too slow, his distribution is awful and I hate to see him bow out in this manner.
I think we have now the most potent attacking force in the league; when fit our 5/6 going forward will be Garrett, Carvill, Lowry, Allen, Munster and Gault! A good mix of pace and power.
Interested to see how the Ports do after a year away, Im not sure Ronnie has added enough to seriously challenge the Big 2. Top 6 would be a good achievement.
