It's That Dog Again
The big news - the really big news - is that my dog, Rascal, got a haircut today. I thought this photograph might satisfy all those people who e-mail asking for updates on our family pet. I also get requests for my thoughts on the future of broadcasting but, well, mainly you ask about the dog.
In fact no one really asks about the other stuff. I lied.

Rascal doesn't look happy. I don't know if it is because of having his picture taken, having a new haircut, or maybe it's the photographer. Perhaps he too is waiting for someone to ask about his thoughts on broadcasting.

I think he is unhappy because he is not sure whether DAB or Online radio is the future.

I think it is online radio that seems to be advancing the quickest, I have had a DAB radio for a few years now but am surprised at the lack of new content on it. I am thinking in opting for an internet radio, but as ever find myself slightly confused by the range of things available.
It would be interesting to see what the growth on your listening figures for online and listen again are.

I'm glad you raised this (unprompted) Norrie because, as it happens, I am giving a speech about this on Thursday. It's an OFCOM event in Glasgow.
Listen again figures are not part of the official RAJAR measurement but I can tell you that audio on the BBC iPlayer gets big numbers and seems to be growing every month.
Online radio (wifi-internet) has some problems. The sets are expensive and too many different companies are offering the aggregating systems that power them. We need a simple industry standard, cheaper sets and more promotion of the platform.

And I was wondering about something else as well which I have come accross on the states called SIRIUS. I think, in fact am reasonably sure this is sattelite radio. It has a huge range of programmes and is infinetly superior to their commercial radio - I could not find any Public Broadcasting stations! But they must exist.

SIRIUS...yes interesting, it's a commercial enterprise beaming a range of new stattions - often themed around one big personality or celebrity -from the sky. You pay for it in a subscription model. I'm told it would be difficult to operate in the U.K because the footprint of the satellite would cover be too big. Not sure I understand that because the SKY service can be confined to Britain & Ireland. American readers feel free to come in at this point.

Like you I am surprised it could not confined in that way!
The reason taht I am aware in particular of this is as you rightly say they theme it round a big artist often say in my case E Street radio (Springsteen) or a particular celeb - I guess like Bob Dylans Theme Time Hour or Little Stevens Underground Garage and of course Howard Stern. They also have a huge range of "music you like " type chgannels so say a whole station devoted to the music that Tom Morton or Ian Anderson would play.
One of the things that would draw you to it would be the exclsuive content - live shows etc.

Norrie..how much would you be prepared to pay for it?

Jeff - I would pay £7.50 to £10 a month and a years subscription of between £75 and £90 I would pay upfront. That is on the assumption of a similar wide ranging content to the states. I guess there would be options which could make it cheaper / more expensive dependant on channels.

'Sawright, Jamesie. Nae probs.
The thing with drats is that 5 is too many and 3 is not enough. 2 single drats + a double-drat = 4 drats, the optimum number.
