The Great Outdoors

Please join me this year in my quest to get fit, lose weight and really get to grips with what Scotland has to offer in the way of outdoor experiences. I've been inspired by our Out of Doors programme which has been recommending all sorts of fun activities. Coastal walking, snow-kiting, puddle-jumping (Ok, I just invented that last one).
Of course this resolution would be a lot easier to stick to if we lived in a slightly warmer climate. But that's no excuse. Who was it that said there is no such thing as bad weather, just the wrong clothing?.
So sign me up: I'm prepared to do what it takes to shed the blubber...and if you have any suggestions do let me know.
Meanwhile, my plan to walk to work every morning might have to wait until I invest in better footwear. And, anyway, that doesn't include the days I travel from Inverness to Glasgow.
I mean, have a little pity!

The answer to your question is Billy Connolly, although I believe he was quoting a Russian truism.
The only diet regime that has ever worked for me is; give up eating chips, give up drinking beer.
Now, where did I put the vodka................

I remember Fred Macaulay saying on his show one morning. "lets me honest this time next year we will all be a little heavier than we are now." I was inspired to prove someone wrong and since last January I have lost 2 stone be eating less, eating sensibly, by buying the lo cal options, and just have smaller portions put on your plate. Don't think you can eat what you like. There is a state of mind you need to be in. Get used to feeling hungry sometimes, you won't die, just go and make a cup of tea with skimmed milk and it will go away. Some people use a smaller plate so it looks full when you serve up a smaller portion to yourself. I have also cut down alcohol to weekends only and moving around a bit more a bit quicker. Only weigh yourself once a week.
Drink fizzy water rather than still, it makes you think your full. Eat fruit only lunches three days a week. Shall I go on it give a rest ? ps over christmas i have put on some weight, I'm not telling you how much but I will tell you when the 7lbs have come off. Ooops.

Hey J
just be good all week `cos my wife tells me that it`s a scientific fact that there are no calories on in any food consumed between 5.30 pm on fridays & midnight on sundays..... It must be true `cos she still looks as good as she did when I married her last century! However, it seems only to apply to the female of the species, as my ever expandind midriff will attest to!

Jeff,
I hit a certain weight with an equally alarming B.M.I. once having rested on my laurels, youthful athleticism...
However my B.P. and Cholesterol were, are excellent but I knew deep down a diet was really what was called for...
Therefore, what I did was to focus on a colleague who was both the office know it all and corpulent in appearance. This was my sole motivation to never to end up looking and acting like him!
It worked!

Thanks for all the advice...after one day someone already said I was looking thinner. Maybe I should quit now while I'm ahead.
