Morning cuppa - what's your first thought when you wake up?

Post categories:

Jane Anastasiades dawn in Cyprus
'Tea. Dawn and iPM. Now I'm ready to face the day'. Jane Anastasiades

We asked you to tell us about that first cup of the day. Thanks for dropping us a line - some your morning rituals below.

Your first thoughts
Professor of Psychology Angela Clow also wrote to us. She wants to know your very first thoughts as you wake up for a project she's working on. Listen to her tea pitch, we gave her the length of time it takes to boil a kettle (it was three-quarters full in case you're wondering..).

You can leave a comment below, email us or tweet your first thoughts.

Morning cuppa rituals
'Cannot operate without 4 cups of Assam - made in a tea pot with loose tea. Then an hour reading before a hard day at the legal coal face.' Sally Armitage

'Tea, for me, that first cuppa ....enables me to face the day...any day, it's crucial. I'm moribund without it. Bleak'. Michael Penning

'Something about the dawn light, the dew, and the quiet makes me ignore the breakfast tea and the earl gray, and head for the chai masala.' Michelle Walder

'A mug of hot milk with two teaspoons of 'camp' coffee and half a teaspoon of honey. The milk is fresh from the bulk tank in the dairy, the honey from a local beekeeper. ' Victoria Heywood

'First cup is usually 'engine oil' (i.e.cheap instant coffee). I'm disabled and on benefits and I don't believe in languishing in bed all day. ' Jo Hancock

'My first tipple today was drinking chocolate which actually was fairtrade cocoa. Why do first tipples have to be tea or coffee?' Graeme Stickings

'If I am not able to have my early cuppa, I feel quite lost and irritable for a long time.' David Matthews

'My morning starts with a bowl of coffee sitting looking at the mountains (I live in the Alps) - at this time of year still snowcapped - gathering my thoughts for the coming day.' Chris Trevallion

First thoughts are absolutely the same every time I wake up:

What time is it? May I go back to sleep?

My first thought was my last dream that came flooding into my consciouness; where i was climbing precariously on the outer wall of my house (but it was not my house) talking nonchalently to a woman who was my wife in the dream (i am not married). I then climbed through a small window into the spare room, onto a bed. Naked, i prepared to defend myself from the ghosts that inhabit that room, with magic. I thrust out my hand like a wizard would do toward the corner of the room only to realize there were no ghosts just a dark chocolate coloured accent wall (the other walls were red), and there was no magic in me to be released by my action. I felt slightly odd and somewhat silly, i also liked the colors, decor and the light in the room, warm, quaint, rustic and relaxing.

I think my waking thought is to recall and confirm my identity - my position in the world, quickly followed by a sense of elation or desolation, monotony or excitement, depending on my current circumstances and what I expect the day to bring.
I have occasionally felt a sense of panic when unable to do this, perhaps when waking in darkness, in unfamiliar surroundings.
Having thought about this, I imagine, although I do not know, that sufferers of Alzheimer's must be unable to do this, and how distressing it must be to not know who you are.

My first thought, as far as I can tell, is always connected figuring out the time and day of the week. This is always immediately followed by something to do with work - even on non-work days. Pity!

I think what a bloody nuisance I have to feed the cat when I would rather just wait for for the kettle to boil

Then I have to decide whether I should dust the floor after feeding the cat or feed the chickens. The chickens usually win. I have made my coffee by this time and it is cooling. Then I can listen to the world service for 10 minutes and then rush up to bathroom to get ready for work

My morning starts with the new tea that i am addicted to. Its delicious , really smooth and thick flavoured, with a slight hint of Citrus and a very subtle hint of smoked wood. Its called Keemun tea, by Toppers Teas of Sussex. I think Twinnings does one as well, but ive never had it. This has become ritual now, and I cant start my day without it.

Often my first thought in the morning is:

Aaaaaaagh need the loo right now - someone blocking it - got to wait or go downstairs - must find nightie- oh okay off loo now - can barge straight in and demand that they exit presto pronto - weeeeeeeeeeeeeeee.

That's better. Back to sleep. Oh. Too late now awake. Mustn't drink so much tea at night, need one now though.
