Eddie Mair | 07:48 UK time, Wednesday, 31 December 2008

The New Year list is out.

In PM tonight we'll hear from 14 year old Ellie Simmonds - the youngest person to receive an award. The BBC News coverage is here. The full list is here. What do you think of who is on it - and who's not?

To find out who's getting the iPM New Year Honour - join us on Saturday at 17.30 when we'll have a special programme dedicated to the people nominated solely by our listeners...and you can read more on this blog then too.

Ellie's a worthy award winner, regardless of her age. She's a shining example to children and adults everywhere.

Unlike Lewis Hamilton - who as soon as he got rich and famous, moved abroad to avoid paying British taxes. He shouldn't get an honour - and I'd rather he didn't race under the British flag either.

This list just confirms that Downing Street has little or no understanding of "life, the universe and everything" or even has a real grasp on fantasy (politics)

I don't think racing drivers should be allowed abroad at all, even though that might harm their chances of winning any non-British grands prix.

Well, after looking at this last New Years Honours List, I think it is about time we did away with them for good.
Looking down the list I can see how worthless and pointless they they have become.

When all of these Honours were first instigated they were presented for excellence in their recipients lifetime commitment to their work what ever it was , the main words are COMMITMENT. and LIFETIME,in this year's list I see very little evidence of this.

Where's Bruce Forsyth. After decades of providing wholesome and top line entertainment, could he be an undeserved casualty of the Ross-Brand fiasco.

abubbler - no, he couldn't; the cases are totally unconnected, and Brucie would be the last to claim he's 'entertained' anyone, certainly not in a topline fashion.

the_real-wombat - 'I'd rather he (Lewis Hamilton) didn't race under the British flag.' ? Are you real? Have you heard of the Credit Crunch??? If he can legally avoid paying taxes, why not? If he was white,we'd be calling him 'shrewd'.
