Gay Life, Gay Death in Iraq.

gay_iraq.jpg Listener Hilary emails to say, Hi, I have been looking at the Gay and Lesbian Christian Movement website and came across a link to this short film- Queer Fear- Gay Life, Gay Death in Iraq.I think it was on You tube.It makes devastating viewing and to think that our soldiers are risking everything for a society that has become significantly worse for gays and transexuals has worried me so much that I just have to 'pass it on'. This is really not right, and no-one is speaking up for gays and lesbians in Iraq etc, out of fear of reprisal. Maybe you could do something with this story?

Well we're working on it. I've been talking to this group - Iraqi LGBT- their blog is very disheartening reading. I also think Hilary points to a really interesting issue in her email when she talks about the military. If you've served in Iraq do you agree with Hilary's view? The film can be seen here

If there are other people you think we should talk to in covering this story please do let us know.

I assumed that the video Hilary had seen was the Alive In Baghdad video from September, interviewing 3 Iraqis who had fled to Syria, talking about what had happened to them and gay people they knew.
    Here's the link:

    Good luck with the story.

Apart from IraqiLGBT, I would suggest talking to the UK gay and lesbian immigration group (http://www.uklgig.org.uk/).

We have bad practice for LGBT asylum applicants. The home office practice is to refuse almost all people and then when (if) they appeal to argue that they can go back and 'be discrete'. All taking place over a long period, of course, is which people often rely on food parcels.

What they say is out of line with what the Foreign Office would say about the safety of a particular country.

For countries like Iraq, Iran, Uganda, Nigeria and Jamaica the potential for returned people to be tortured or even killed is very real.

I run a website about LGBT asylum seekers and information specific to Iraq can be found here http://madikazemi.blogspot.com/search?q=iraq
