Show notes: Coca-Cola, data centres and the map
Some of the things covered this week:
Credit crunch map
We spoke to Andrew Hudson Smith, Research Director at the Centre for Advanced Spatial Analysis, who developed our credit crunch map for us. With tens of thousands of results in, the map is now a lurid shade of cyan in most areas - which suggests that fuel prices are on listeners minds. Also we spoke to Barry Shrier of Liberty Cars, who wants Range Rover owners to abandon the pump and instead plug the car in.
Data Centres
Information. Bad for the environment? More here.

Entrepreneur Martha Lane Fox shared her favourite websites
Coke
Could Coca-Cola use its peerless distribution to assist in the aid effort? More on the blog.

Barry Shrier's assertion that there was no doubt about the efficiency gain of electric cars caught my ear. He may be quite wrong.
The best TDi diesel engines (as used in Range Rovers) are over 40% efficient, which by coincidence is the efficiency of the top performing coal fired power stations. Taking transmission losses into account you need less fossil fuel to put a kWh of energy into the "tank" of your vehicle with diesel than you do with electric.
If the electricity is generated by a peak lopping gas turbine at 20% efficiency then the diesel option uses half the fuel.
You then have to get into whole life cycle costings, battery weight and disposal issues, etc etc and the whole thing is way more complicated than the evangelical clarity of Mr Shrier.
The only clear advantage of electric vehicles is the lack of tailpipe emssions on city streets while they are using the battery.
