Good idea on asking why our data is in Iowa. After spending 10+ years in IT looking after servers I know that server farms and business continuity are pushing our data far from our physical location.

I've just heard Minister Mills (Question Time) saying we need ID cards to prevent Identity Fraud yet it was HMRC who have lost my families data. The data wasn't even encrypted and it wasn't as if it was the first time this sort of information was lost in this type of way from HMRC.

Richard Thomas has no teeth outside the UK and seemingly not many here. Norwich Union got fined but not the Gov't who will have the most detailed data to lose.

What is he able to do and what should we do?

My interpretation of IT is very simple. It is the most IMPOTENT TOOL invented by men to hold up our progress each day. If you calculated the hours of work lost because of some idiot writing a soft ware programme for a business he has never worked in and done the practical experience to understand that you cannot apply general criteria to everything - the hours lost is frightening. I know because I work in an industry that totally relies on IT.
