Last night on Steve Lamacq's BBC 6 Music show, our very own ‘royal correspondent’ Tom Robinson popped in to reveal some exciting news about the upcoming 6 Music Festival, which takes place from 28th Feb – 1st March at the Victoria Warehouse, Manchester. For the inaugural event, four exciting new artists in the North will open up the two main stages each night.

The acts are:

Kiran Leonard

BIRD

Weird Shapes

PINS

All of the acts uploaded their music via the BBC Introducing uploader, and were subsequently put forward by the BBC Introducing shows on BBC Local Radio stations in the North.

Hailing from Liverpool, BIRD open the main stage on Friday 28th February after support from the BBC Introducing show at BBC Radio Merseyside. On the same night, atmospheric indie group Weird Shapes from Teeside open Stage 2. They have been regularly championed by BBC Introducing in Tees. On Saturday 1st March, Kiran Leonard - supported by BBC Introducing in Manchester - opens the main stage. The mercurially talented 17-year-old musician from Oldham made use of 22 different instruments, including a radiator, on his debut album, Bowler Hat Soup. And finally, the increasingly popular girl guitar group PINS, also backed by BBC Introducing in Manchester, kick off Stage 2 on the Saturday.

Speaking about our first festival opportunity of 2014, Jason Carter, BBC Head of Live Music and Events and BBC Introducing says: “BBC Introducing in the North is one of the hotbeds for discovering fantastic new artists, and the BBC Radio 6 Music Festival in Manchester – a city, itself a proven hub of musical talent - is going to be a brilliant opportunity for some of these artists to have exposure to potential new fans.”

For full details on the line-up, head to the 6 Music Festival website. We will be there taking photos and providing video highlights of all our acts across the weekend.
