Added to the Radio 1 playlist this week is Billy Lockett and his track Pathways. It takes the spot offered to BBC Introducing every seven days and means Pathways will be played on shows including Greg James, Scott Mills and Fearne Cotton.
Hometown: Billy is a self-taught singer-songwriter from Northampton.
Style: Lockett specialises in a passionate and thought-provoking mix of indie, folk and pop reminding us of Paolo Nutini, Frank Turner and Ed Sheeran – pretty good company to be hanging in. Pathways takes a look at the record industry, dealing with the opinions and expectations which emerging artists have to deal with. It’s the title track of Billy’s debut EP which is out now.
You need to know: When it comes to support slots, Billy is a big hit with the ladies having toured with KT Tunstall, Lana Del Ray and Nina Nesbitt. The charm offensive has definitely worked and Billy now heads out on his own UK tour in March, with a couple of dates already sold out at the time of writing.
Supported by: Billy has been backed by BBC Introducing in Northampton from the start. In September 2011, he uploaded a track called Balance which went on to be a BBC Introducing Tip of the Week and earn airplay from the Godfather of BBC Introducing, Huw Stephens.
