On the playlist: Jim Lockey and The Solemn Sun - A Song About Death
Introducing online producer
On the BBC Radio 1 playlist this week is Jim Lockey and The Solemn Sun with A Song About Death. Taking up the BBC Introducing slot on the playlist means that Jim and co. will be played on some heavyweight daytime shows marshalled by Dev, Huw Stephens and Greg James among others. The song is below if you want to take a listen – you can also share your thoughts in the comments section.
Hometown: The quartet are from Cheltenham, which is cool because we don’t get enough opportunities to mention that particular Gloucestershire spa town.
Style: Jim Lockey was initially a solo artist before forming a bigger band in 2009. The band are now a solid, super tight touring machine who bring the elements of country, folk, indie and punk together in a stompingly crowd pleasing manner. JL&TSS write poetically and don’t spare the meaning and thought in their tunes. A Song About Death is one such beauty.
You need to know: The band are regularly compared to the work Frank Turner, which is a pretty good fit along with The Gaslight Anthem and Bright Eyes. They were actually Turner’s support band during his performance at the London 2012 Olympics opening ceremony and recently supported him on tour.
Supported by: Alongside BBC Introducing in the West, Jim Lockey and The Solemn Sun can count Frank Turner and Zane Lowe among their fans.
