Wrexham in the houseeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!

Huw Stephens Huw Stephens | 12:38 UK time, Tuesday, 27 February 2007

This week on the show its the ace Special Relationship in session, Their Tearing Your Heart Out has become a bit of a regular on the show, sounding ace and I can;t wait to hear the session from the London based band. Also this week, Brett Anderson drops in to pick a band to support him on a forthcoming sold out date. Resist all temptations to sing Animal nitrate et al at him, and listen as he picks a band to support him. This weeks show is live from Wrexham cos me and Beth Elfyn are hosting a live gig there at Central Staion with Roseville Band, Leaving Isaacs Shop, Gwildor and Arnie on Wednesday (come along if youre about!) and the Radio 1 Wales gig is live from there on Thursday night (St David's Day!!!) with Euros Childs playing - hooray! So I'm off to pack my bags for Wrexham, straight after another driving lesson. Beep beep!

Got a wickedy wah show for you tonight - Connan an dthe Mockasins are in session, a brilliant band I came across in New Zealand at the end of last year. Theyre a lot of fun and I'm looking forward to hearing the session tongith. Hope you can tune in from 12!

Scouting For Girls...

They signed a record deal it seems this week. Well done them - I hope it all goes well. Check out their myspace for their bouncy piano-pop tunes

Tall Pony

Huw Stephens Huw Stephens | 13:13 UK time, Tuesday, 20 February 2007

all you Tall Pony fans will be pleased to know that I'm Your Boyfriend Now will be coming out as a single in May on Cherryade Records. Boyfriend was the most requested song on the Unsigend show last year, and Cherryade was our DIY label of the year. A match made in indie heaven!

Last Night on Radio 1

Huw Stephens Huw Stephens | 12:06 UK time, Monday, 19 February 2007

Had a busy weekend - went to a night called Peppermint Patti in Cardiff on Firday night where Persil from Amsterdam, Retro Spankees and Das Wanderlust all played and sounded grand. Das Wanderlust are currently without a drummer so its tricky for them - they were playing with a minidisc drummer!
On Saturday I was up in Llandudno for the Radio Cymru Roc n Pop Awards, where the great and the good of thew Welsh language music scene gathered. Big winners were Radio Luxembourg, Euros Childs and Genod Droog, and a lot of messy fun was had.
Back down to Cardiff for the Daedelus gig last night, with superb support from Mr Ronz and Diwygiad, and then I was covering Rob da Bank last night from midnight, taking over the airwaves and maaged to play some happy hardcore (thanks to producer Louise!), lovely folk from Andrew Hockey, Fionn Regan, bouncy tunes from Joakim, the Pancakes, Euros Childs, CSS, Pepe Deluxe and loads more. We had DAEDELUS playing live, and he did an amzing set. His live experience is so unique and different to other electronic music producers out there - listen again if you missed it. Guto from Super Furry Animlas dropped by with a few tracks from his forthcoming dub compilation on Trojan, and Gruff SFA read the book at bedtime. Wicked fun, and da Bank will be back where he belongs next Sunday night!

Brits!

Huw Stephens Huw Stephens | 17:51 UK time, Thursday, 15 February 2007

I was lucky enough to go last night and had a lurvely time watching the show. I secretly fancy Amy Winehouse. I resisted all the free booze (well, most of it) to do the show sober last night. Pleased Arctic Monkeys won.
So many good tunes on the show last night - Gilbert's Sefl Help track, bringing back Tall Pony, a session from the ever so promising All New Adventures of Us, and new Bobby McGee's, Rory McVicar and our label of the week was Wrath Records. Loads of great music in last nights show, so do 'listen' again if you missed it. Even though it'll be the first time you listen. You knows the score!

Yeah!

Huw Stephens Huw Stephens | 12:23 UK time, Wednesday, 14 February 2007

Went to see Clap Your Hands Say Yeah last night who sounded great. I really like the new album and tunes sounded good last ight. Support was from Cold War Kids whose We Used To Vacatian Was one of the best tunes of last year. Tonight on the show we're going all luvy and duvy (Duvy - what does that mean?) with ace unsigned songs of love (no rubbish ones though, obviously) and THE ALL NEW ADVENTURES OF US in session. They're such a good band, based in Northampton and about to release a single on a label that Get Cape Wear Cape Fly has set up for them to release tunes on. What a nice thing to do! So yeah, check the session tonight.
before the show I'm off to the Brits, so if I come back and play Kooks, james Morrison and Paolo Nutini ont he show tonight, you'll know why
see ya later!

in for Rob...

Huw Stephens Huw Stephens | 12:57 UK time, Sunday, 11 February 2007

Snow in Cardiff meant the dubstep night I was looking forward to on Friday was cancelled. Last night got to see Future of the Left for the first time at Clwb, and it sounded immense. You've essentially got two frontmen - Andy and Kelson, and all songs sound pretty damn good. Looking forward to the next time. Then I dj'd on the middle floor till the early hours, playing all sorts really, but by the end concentrating on dub and reggae and Dr Who Dat. Ace!
Tonight I'm in for Rob da Bank on his Sunday night show, that's mignight-2am tonight, with Fionn Regan in session plaing his genteel lush Irish folk, and and anti-folk hero Jeffrey Lewis readingthe book at bedtime. I've been digging deep all week for the finest tunes that I don't get to play elsewhere ont he radio, so looking forward to pouring them on the airwaves tonight!

The snow came. Next door neighbours undergarments are encrusted in snow.
Tune stuck in my head from last nights show - Adventures of Loki, Feminine Side.
And have you read all about the Brett Anderson Support Slot Competition?
Tonight on Radio 1 Wales, the Secret Show are in session. It's Matt from Funeral for a Friend and his mates, so that should be good. And there's a chat with bloc Party too. And me and Beth's favourite new music.
Right, I'm off to throw snowballs at the wall. Nothing else. Just the wall......

What's Going down tonight....

Huw Stephens Huw Stephens | 20:20 UK time, Wednesday, 7 February 2007

Since the last blog I have -

Marvelled at Elvis Perkins' sad songs
Watched Wales not beat the Irish at rugby
Seen the Bobby McGee's play a wonderful gig (new songs by them on the Valentine special next week!)
and eaten quite a fair few noidles

Wednesday night time is showtime, and iI'm doing the show live from Cardiff tonight. It's about to snow any minute.............................
....
..........
...
..
no? Soon, at least. Maybe tonight, during the show, when we can all run into the streets and throw snow balls at each other while the brilliant Silver Pyre are playing. They're in session tonight, they're from Somerset, and the session tracks sound quite extraordinary. Also tonight, since we're in Cardiff, loads of new Welsh tunes to play you, from Truckers of Husk, Gin Drinker, Raido Luxembourg, Plyci and Attack and Defend. plus Tipster Jen is joining us live from, err, Cardiff. Don't worry non-Cardiffians, there's music from Brighton (a few actually) and....
oh, does anyone care where bands are from? It's what the music is like is whats important as we all know, and believe you me, only the finest unsigned cuts make it to the Radio 1 show.
It's on tonight at midnight, and up for the next seven days to listen again of course.
take care

Blood Red Shoes....

Huw Stephens Huw Stephens | 09:23 UK time, Friday, 2 February 2007

...Are such a good band. One Girl, one Boy, One Guitar, One Set of Drums = Many Many Snarling Tunes which Sound Massive and Could fill the Main Stage at Glastonbury.
They did a corking session for Radio 1 last year, and have a new single coming out soon, with the title of, if my memory serves me right, I'm Bored of Living By the Sea. King Alexander supported, the first time I think I've ever seen them. One seven inch old and heavy.

Lots of fun and good tunes ont he Beth and Huw Extravaganza on Radio 1 Wales last night - The New 1920 in session, new songs by Euros Childs, Arcade Fire, Kids in Gass Houses, Leave the Capital and....listen here!

Forgot how good Hammell on Trial was until I dug out his album this morning.
