Hi I’m Andy Pipes, executive product manager for Knowledge & Learning (K&L) which looks after the BBC Food website.

Today we are announcing some changes to how you can bookmark recipes on BBC Food. This blog post outlines the changes and the reasons behind them.

Goodbye Binder, Hello Favourites

In the past the BBC’s websites have had different ways for the audience to share, collect and annotate BBC content. To ensure audiences have a consistent experience we’ve begun to standardise the way that we describe these actions.

You might have noticed, for instance, that the button to allow users to share pages on Facebook, Twitter and Google is now consistent on News, Sport, BBC iPlayer, Food and most other BBC websites. You can read about this in my colleague Mark Channon’s blog post.

Radio iPlayer already allow users to save their favourite programmes using the Add to Favourites button when a list of episodes or series is displayed. As of today, BBC Food will share this function.

The current Recipe Binder will become Your Favourites. Saving a recipe to Your Favourites is as simple as clicking the green Add to Favourites button that appears next to the recipe title.

Removing an item from your favourites is just as easy. Follow the link to Your Favourites to see a list of your saved recipes. Click on the grey vertical bar to remove a favourite from your list when on the Your Favourites area.

For anyone with recipes saved on their current Binder, we will move your saved recipes over to your Favourites list. Those recipes will be stored against your BBC iD, which means that you can still take your Favourites with you on any device or screen you happen to be logged in to.

What happened to filters, notes and search?

The old Binder service included a filter and search function which allowed users with many saved recipes to easily pull out the one they wanted to access. Unfortunately this feature is not yet part of the new Favourites area.

This was a difficult decision based on the fact that just 0.07% of visitors to the Food website used this search facility in the Binder. The seldom-used feature, Notes, is also being closed as we move on to the new platform. The small number of people who used this service have been advised to copy their Notes before the upgrade to BBC Favourites to avoid disappointment.

If you have questions or comments about the updates, please ask them in the section below and we will do our best to answer any queries.

Appears to work OK from my laptop but not iPad (comment 81) but my iPad appears to have switched to the 'mobile' version of the BBC webpage one consequence of which is I loose some functionality including seeing this blog!

Hi, Every recipe I have tried to save since the changeover says "Sorry we were not able to save the recipe (hopefully accurate wording) Please try again later!
Not just once, I've tried quite a few! Never had any problems previously. Hope it's sorted quickly as it's quite annoying

Dear Andy, Stardate day five. As user statistics seem to be the given prime driving force behind the changes please take note that 99% of clients posting on here are either unable to save recipes, unable to find saved recipes or unable to find stored notes on saved recipes. May I kindly suggest that the updates were implemented before they had been seriously tested to destruction and therefore a return to the previous version be re-implemented until the updated version has full functionality for all users. Simplicity of use is the key required function.

Just discovered that recipes which I tried to add to Favourites were already in my Binder, if searching in Binder were still available it would have saved time, very frustrating.

What was and easy to access binder has now become totally unworkable. In the past if I could not remember the name of a recipe, I entered either the main ingredient, or the chef, and hey presto in seconds, there it was. Now I will have to search through the whole of my "favourites" at the moment, 196, to find a recipe. If this is progress, then god help us all!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's a repeat (sorry Beeb - no pun intended!) from 18 months ago when the BBC Homepage was changed and I haven't been back there since. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Yet again a lot of money has been spent in producing something that has just alienated your users. By the way, I too have expired recipes and can't add any new ones. I have 219 saved recipes.

Think of this as our own little Istanbul park protest. Only in this case involving pesto and buns and stuff.

Dear Andy, Stardate day six and still no progress. Sitting in a vacuum, feeling high above the world, planet earth is blue and there's nothing we can do........

Just caught up with the stream of comments added over the weekend - the general theme seems exactly as it was on Friday. Why is there no response from any of the 'Tristrams'? Dare we hope they are in a huddle somewhere, working out how to roll this whole thing back to how it was before? I'm sure all the fans of the food website in general and the Binder facility in particular are not total dinosaurs, resistant to change. We could appreciate development if it provided new/improved functionality, did not take away previously useful functions and - most importantly - if it worked!

@OjiveOjive I'm sorry that the feature is still not working for you. As I said, we are still working towards a solution. Yes, we did cross-browser test this feature, and did not encounter issues in our tests. Thanks for your patience whilst we unpick what's gone wrong for a small minority of users.

All: we are looking at when filters functionality can return, as posted. I'm sorry I can't be more specific at this time, but we will certainly post when we have a better idea.

Not issue with trying t make sites better and quicker, this project has failed though. As a programme manager I would be demanding IT dept give me answers. No problem with the note function being removed, but filter and search was often used by myself due to the large amount of recipes saved. Please address the following:
I still cannot save recipes your site response being 'Sorry we couldn't add your Favourite' Please try again later. Also how about correcting the English of this statement?
    Expired recipes!
    Recipe images missing!
Note the add to favourites button is not green.
