Will the Take That reunion survive?

12:42 UK time, Thursday, 26 August 2010

Robbie Williams and Gary Barlow have held their first joint interview in 15 years. Is their friendship "back for good"?

The two song-writers fell out years ago and Robbie left the band, Take That. Both continued their careers separately. However, they reunited in Los Angeles 18 months ago.

Theirs is not the first artistic friendship to be rocky. Simon and Garfunkel broke up in 1970 and then reunited for their Central Park gig in 1981. Members of the band Led Zeppelin went their separate ways but reunited in 2008.

Why do artists fall out? Have you fallen out with a friend or has your friendship survived turbulence? Have you fallen out with a friend and made up years later?

Thank you for your comments. This debate is now closed.

    Who cares!

Surely this has got to be the all time low for a HYS topic!

  • Comment number 2.

I was just thinking how terminally sad it must be for these talentless nobodies to have nothing better to do than desperately try to re-live their fifteen minutes of mediocrity from over a decade ago, then suddenly they were gazumped in the headlines by Azil Nadir: a man propelling to new heights the definition of "who gives a s*!t?"

Seriously though, as I may be one of the first posters here I thought I aught to set a pretty low bar for contributions so the rest of you can aim at taking the "debate" downhill from here!

Will the Take That reunion survive? Ha,ha,ha

  • Comment number 4.

Will the Take That reunion survive? This hardly seems worthy of a BBC debate.

Will the Take That reunion survive?

Exactly how many HYS users does the Beeb think are in Take That's target demographic?

    I'm betting not many.

This debate is going to to negative fast and then deteriorate.

Oh well, let the vitriol commence.

  • Comment number 6.

On a slightly less cynical note, the reunion will last long anough to fleece some menopausal women out of a few million quid.

    Happy days for all comcerned.....

  • Comment number 7.

I used to enjoy visiting the HYS board. These days, it's not worth my time. No real debate, no truly influential discussion, nothing of interest. Can we go back to the days of interesting and informative BBC journalism, instead of this drivel, please.
Leave the celeb chatter for Channel5.

C'mon. Be serious. Apart from the record company and some of their (most now aging) "die-hard" fans - Who really gives a fig?

    Slooooooooow news day, is it?

    I didn't mean it
I just want you back for good

I want you back for good

  • Comment number 12.

This board is knackered again for postings - isn't it?

  • Comment number 13.

Will the Take That reunion survive? One rather gets the impression that since the Tory/Liberal coalition has taken over, there has been a dumbing down on HYS as to what one is allowed to debate; in come trivia debates, out go political debates or anything of importance.

  • Comment number 14.

    *Sigh*
Lordy, Even the X factor Autotune "scandal" would be a better topic!
meanwhile back on topic. No It won't survive, they've both already said they're doing 1 album & possibly a tour to rake in the cash than they're going back to Robbie solo & Gary with Take That. Worst mistake Gary ever made letting the chubby disillusioned megalomaniac back when they were doing so well.

  • Comment number 15.

Dear me, my curtains in the lounge are absolutely filthy! - must get them cleaned.

  • Comment number 16.

    Who?

  • Comment number 17.

And I'm supposed to care? Why? There are genuine issues in the world that actually matter and little-boy-men and their warbling are just a totally mindnumbing nothing.

  • Comment number 18.

    I hope not

  • Comment number 19.

Do you read your own Copy , this arrangement with Robbie is only for one Album , and possibly a tour
    depending on Album sales .
then they will go there separate ways , Robbie probably in Rehab , and Garry in Gregs

  • Comment number 20.

It will last long enough to make a reported £75million for the band.

For that money, I would have the 'Patience' to sing 'A million love songs' to a friend I'd fallen out with till the cows came home.

To the naysayers saying this isn't a warranted HYS topic, for gods sake go hang about on a forum that is more suited to your tastes instead of whining on here.

That said, I'm curious to see who can be the first poster to attribute a potential future Barlow/Williams split to Thatcherism...

  • Comment number 21.

I'm glad they've made up. It's been worrying me for a bit now and Robbie was looking a bit sad.

It'll last about as long as the spice girls one did - long enough to make pots of cash.

Tomorrow - will it rain or go dark first. I'm betting on rain. Have you noticed it has rained more since the libservacrats got in?

Seriously, HYS is having a laugh now.

The BBC is in serious trouble. There are huge questions over its size and cost, and the increasingly crap quality of its output. HYS seems to be doing everything it can to provide the BBC's critics with ammunition.

There's so much going on in the world - the news site mentions, in no particular order, the German HIV case, the shooting of the Spanish troops in Afghanistan, Sarkozy's policy towards the Rom.....

Most importantly, as a final parting shot, Labour's failed immigration policy means that last year saw record net immigration.

Come on BBC - let's talk about that. You explain where we're going to accommodate the record numbers of immigrants YOU wanted in the country. YOU explain where the housing should go, and why we should wreck our environment for it....

But hey, no, let's talk about Take That.

  • Comment number 29.

Lol - well for a bunch of people who this this topic is awful and not worth commmenting on, there seems to be an awful lot of you who have apparrently wasted your time! Everyone has different interests and should be given the right to talk about them, and no one has the right to refer to that as sad. No doubt I would find many of your interests very sad but I just don't bother commenting.

I for one am happy they are back together, and yes I think it will last. The whole falling out all those years ago was due to the egos of rich young men, now they have all grown up and will be rolling in cash whether they got back together or not, therefore there is not the same level of pressure. It'll be good to see how the music has grown and to hear what they come up with. I actually like most kinds of music not just because of who is singing it but because I enjoy it. Half the stuff in the charts these days is pointless noise so something with a tune and no violent undertone would be great

No, it won't. Williams is too much of an egotist for it to survive. They'll have a couple of hits and then Williams will decide he's bigger than the band and then leave. We'll then have to endure years more of him complaining about how hard done by he is and how beastly Barlow was to him. Still, at least we may get to see him being fat again which will be truly hilarious.

This is the first HYS posting I have read recently that hasn't been like one of the appendices of Mein Kampf. I guess the moderator has tired of reading the spiteful thoughts of right wing zealots. I know I have. If there's any job in this country I hope pays well it is that of the HYS moderator. You deserve a knighthood.

  • Comment number 35.

I can't help feeling that too much attention has been paid to 'Take That' and not enough to their Glaswegian rivals "Stitch This".

  • Comment number 36.

Thank goodness that the BBC, on it's main website, has given time and space to the inconsequential happenings in the lives of pointless celebrities. People who say this sort of dross ought to be relegated to the "raaaydeeeeoooo wooooone" website obviously think that the BBC ought to have noticed the current parlous state of the country's finances and ought not to be so proflagate with money that they haven't actually earned but what do such people know?

  • Comment number 37.

Robbie Williams' career ended after the release of 'Escapaology'. But whilst there were a few slating lyrics to 'new best friend' Gary Barlow on that record, he really hasn't made anything worth listening to since that. If you remember, the Take That reunion a few years ago openly invited Robbie to join the band again, but due to the impending release of a new album, his answer was plain and simple. Having released 2 albums since then, with no singles reaching anywhere near the top spot, what else is left for a man who's own career is pretty much over and done with? One final push to be popular again. And my guess is, it won't last long at all.

Well said Bloke . The Immigration figures are out Today - we should be debating them instead of Take that. Figures showed 567,000 immigrants/arrivals came to Britain last year . No wonder the Government doesn't want that debated.

    Good point.

    - David and Nick are soooooo cool that they are actually creating a microclimate around themselves, making us, quite literally, and in a way Tony Blair could only ever have dreamt of, Cool Britannia

    - The Tories really are the Devil Incarnate, and Cameron is the Fifth Horseman of the Apocalypse, his presence in Downing Street marking the beginning of a period of catastrophic climate change, to be followed by storms, quakes and general annihilation (or in England's case, some drizzle).

Quote per Gary Barlow: "I think once we've done that [album/tour] Rob will go back to being Rob and we'll go back to being a four, I think it'll resume to how it was."

Take That (with or without Robbie) will last as long at the record company and music execs are making money from them. As soon as their popularity begins to wane they'll be dropped like a hot potatoe and the search will begin for the 'next big thing'. It does seem this is how the music industry now works, and I guess it's part of our throw-away society.

Just had a comment deleted for pointing this out elsewhere, that the really important stuff is being kept from us in favour of rubbish like this.

Well done Jennifer on actually saying what you think - better than the 50 odd other comments that fail to make any point - thank goodness these people aren't running the country! If you don't like it, don't post. Jog on take your issue to the BBC rather than wasting a thread - they actually have a contact us page for issues/concerns and will no doubt deal with them head on: http://news.bbc.co.uk/newswatch/ukfs/hi/feedback/default.stm

That guy on topic 40 - a little rude I think passing comment on whether someone uses their vote based on whether they like Take That?!

I'm sure there is a lot of younger traffic on here who loved Take That in the day so maybe there is an audience for it - who have been put off by this negative culture.

Well now, there is the almost expected appearance of immigration, politics is mentioned, and even religion gets a foothold. All that's needed now is the State of Education, and we have the full set. It's almost like meeting old friends. What would HYS be without them? In an effort to keep more or less to the topic, I've lost several friends in my life. Outlived them all, but during the creative years, there was never any turbulence.

In the great scheme of things, does it really matter? A more important question is why where the BBC giving free advertising to the single this morning?

Now I am usually a great supporter of the BBC...

But honestly, just look at the three headline subjects to be commented upon:

*How would you survive being trapped?
*Will the Take That reunion survive?
*Is outrage over cat in bin justified?

This isn't The Sun, The Star or even The Mail. Please raise the standard of your game BBC!

What happened? Did Robbie Williams's solo farce hit the buffers so he went crawling back. I don't think many people will be bothered whether they'll make it or not, their new song that I heard on the news sounded crap. That reminds me I must go for one, cheerio.

Read the comments please, BBC , and wake up. This is not what HYS is for

I'm sure this is a joke topic. You know, August, the silly season. All the mods are in Blackpool with their buckets and spades and the one who is left can't cope with serious discussions.

Will the reunion survive ? Did the cat in the bin survive? Have you done all your Christmas shopping yet?

    =======================================================================
Well said Bloke . The Immigration figures are out Today - we should be debating them instead of Take that. Figures showed 567,000 immigrants/arrivals came to Britain last year . No wonder the Government doesn't want that debated.//

Actually, I'm sure the government does want to see it being debated.

It's the BBC that doesn't. I've noticed that in all the discussion about the 'need' for more housing, the BBC, like the last government, is lying by omission.

The basic BBC lie is to avoid admitting that providing extra housing is a threat to the enviroment. Also, because the housing will also generate the need for additional infrastructure, it's also a considerable cost.

Then, the BBC adds to that lie by allowing its journalists and interviewees to discuss the 'need' for extra housing by refusing any mention of the link between immigration and population growth, population growth and housing need.

During the last election, I heard the Greens in particular allowed to say get away with the lie that population growth was neither an environmental issue nor related to immigration.

But hey, let's pave the country over, and talk about Take That.

AndyC555, I would like to assure you I both have a vote and passionately use it! Also while I'm at it, I am not blonde, dumb, orange or anyother stereotype you'd like to use. I just like what I like.

The last time I looked I was living in a country where we are meant to have freedom of speech and I for one believe that I am entitled to this.. on any subject I find interesting enough to comment on.

You too have the right, and I am not going to critisise that, however person attach is a very small and childish thing. If you have an opinion on the subject that we are debating then voice it but don't use it to attach someone you know nothing about!

Don't know, but you could send them to Lebanon, Hamas will think the Israeli's have got a new secret weapon, it could stop them launching rockets, yu no wot am sayin?

Is HYS's idea of 'yoof' topics people who are interested in 'Take That'?

You really are plumbing the depths of idiot questions today. Is this the same BBC that does quite good news analysis when most people are either in bed, working, or watching the tele? Or is this the BBC that can only cover publicity blurbs fed to it by viral sites on Twitter? I cannot work out which is which lately.

  • Comment number 94.

    Let's hope not!

  • Comment number 95.

I really don't care. Take That didn't do anything musically significant, they just did middle of the road pop. There's nothing wrong with that, but they aren't even on the first step when it comes to those who truly put their stamp on the musical world.

.........................................................................Don't generalise about menopausal women, some of us still have some taste you know.

Personally I wish they would go away again, together with X-factor and the like however, unfortunately for me, some people actually like it. Guess I will have to switch the radio off now as well as the television.

Don't know, and frankly don't care.

  • Comment number 98.

I am a big Take That fan, I have been since I was 8yrs old (I am now 27). I do not mind if the reunion does not last, for me to be able to see them as a five piece on tour, which I never got the chance to do first time round is major dream for me!

To those who said they have not contributed anything significant, I would say you are wrong. They may not be huge in the US but they are over here with huge legion of loyal fans! They open the doors for bands similar to them to make in the music industry where they had been struggling before and they certainly were not typical manufactured group. For me, they have brought out some of the best music in the last couple of decades, but then some may disagree but that is just dependent on your taste in music!

Nope, that prize goes to the HYS topic about the Eurovision Song Contest! - That was really the lowest the BBC could possibly go - Now we just have to accept the rubbish topics of irrelevance to anything will never be as pointless as that one!

But this is almost as pointless - WHO does really care?
