Is travelling by train too expensive?

Post categories:

Graham Stewart | 10:08 UK time, Wednesday, 4 November 2009

Virgin Cross Country
The UK's first £1,000 rail ticket has gone on sale. That's how much it could cost you to travel from Kyle of Lochalsh to Newquay.

Of course, it's not the most likely fare you would buy. Indeed, a spokesman for Cross Country has confirmed to us that no-one had actually bought this ticket. The train company says that anyone wanting a first-class return would be likely to book a saver return in advance and pay £561.

Nonetheless, it highlights a more general issue about the cost of "walk-on" fares and the rate at which many of them have increased over recent years. The rail expert who uncovered this latest example, Barry Doe, says the £1,002 ticket had been available for £486 as recently as September 2008

So what's been your experience of buying a ticket?

I took advantage of a 4 day Freedom of Scotland pass recently which only cost £110. I was all round the country from Kyle to Carlisle and Berwick to Helensburgh, overnighting in both Edinburgh and Glasgow. 19 trains and only 1 didn't arrive at the advertised minute, and that was 2 minutes early.
I don't get to travle by train often but with my recent experience, it was very very good.

Yes. Travelling by train on other than local services is too expensive - especially for those that do not qualify for concessionary travel. Surely this is the fault of the Tories for de-nationalising the railways in the first place? I hope people remember that, and all the other things done by recent governments, when voting at next year’s general election.

I say: Bring back British Rail!

Not a perfect organisation by any means. But a lot better than what we have at present.

I think the long-standing problems with rail in Britain goes back to the post-Beeching era around 1965 when there was an influx of management executives who, it seemed, loved money and business more than they loved trains and railways. In my view these people lacked the enthusiasm for British rail that had been its hallmark for many years. So the service slowly went awry.

Aye it is and the amount of revenue I have personally witnessed being 'MISSED' by so called 'SELECTIVE' on-board ticket collectors leaves this commuter even more hacked off!
