Jan Powell quits Tories and joins Lib Dems

Graham Smith | 15:31 UK time, Friday, 17 June 2011

Cornwall Councillor Jan Powell, elected as a Conservative in 2009 to represent the Liskeard North division, tells me she is defecting to the Liberal Democrats. Hear what she has to say on BBC Radio Cornwall's Martin Bailie programme 5pm - 6pm today. I think this could have some very serious repercussions for the council leader, Alec Robertson. I hear the sound of knives sharpening...

Interesting that the Conservative administration on the council seems to be growing weaker. As a principle though not sure I am completely happy about elected representatives crossing the floor in such a way. I understand why Jan has and respect her decision but still, voting one for one party and getting another, this is Cornwall not Westminster for pitys sake.

Easy enough to fix - all Jan has to do is resign and force a by-election. Let's see if Liskeard North wanted her or a Tory - and whether they still want either.

Hi Graham, any info (or confirmation) about the supposed defection of Loic Rich (MK councillor) on Truro City Council? He's apparently gone Tory. Would be great if you could do a post about it.

  • Comment number 4.

Quitting the Tory party for the Lib Dems is political suicide. Quitting Mebyon Kernow for any other party is just common sense.

I think when people defect to another party an election should be called to ensure the person carries the mandate of the people, most people vote for a party rather than candidate

BTW JMortimer experience tells me that would not be a very good idea. As things stand this carries more significance

    Skipping from Big-Tory to Little-Tory.
    Hardly earth-shattering.
