Kyles and 'More go for title

Only three games managed to beat the weather in the Scottish Hydro Premier Division last weekend, all with no surprises.

Oban Camanachd took on league leaders Kyles Athletic at Mossfield, and would have been pleased to head for the dressing room at half time 1-0 up thanks to an Iain Macmillan goal.

Kyles regrouped at half-time and quickly brought the scoreline back level through David Zavoroni. The Tighnabruaich men then fought on to snatch both points, late strikes from Roddy MacDonald, and Fraser MacDonald finishing the fixture 3-1.

Camanachd Cup champions Newtonmore made no such meal of things at Inveraray. Glen Mackintosh bagged himself a hat-trick to continue the Badenoch side's good form, while still biting at the heals of Kyles Athletic.

The last game to dodge the dirt saw Kingussie travel to Glenorchy, and fine shooting put King's in seventh heaven. Martin Dallas scored first for Kingussie, this was followed by four goals from skipper Ronald Ross, while young guns Hamish Anderson, and Rory Macgregor also got their names on the scoresheet.

Glenorchy have had a hard year of high-scoring defeats against them and will be looking forward to the end of this season I'd imagine. With the end of the campaign though will be the opportunity to regroup and rebuild before tackling South Division 1 next year.

Looking ahead to this weekend's action, Glenorchy take on Inveraray, Lovat host Kingussie, while Oban Camanachd challenge Glenurquhart.

The Premier Division league decider will also take place this weekend, when Newtonmore travel to Tighnabruaich to face Kyles Athletic.

Newtonmore will feel hard done by last month when Kyles scored two goals in injury time to steal the Macaulay Cup from under their noses.

If Kyles can manage to beat 'More again on their home ground, they will be near as dammit crowned Premier champions, the first time in the club's history. If last year's league winners Newtonmore beat Kyles then they have to pray Kyles drop points elsewhere as the south side's goal difference is far greater.

One thing for sure is, this game will be a battle of epic proportion.

Before I go I'd like to thank Tam Cowan and Stuart Cosgrove for inviting me to be their guest on last weekend's Off the Ball. It was a real honour and privilege to be part of a show that I have listened to and loved for years, and of course lovely to talk about our own sport with the nation. I can honestly say I have not been so nervous about something in a long time, however they were great and pretty gentle with me to be fair.

Thanks again lads.

Safe travels to all clubs and supporters.
