Christmas wish list

Alys Fowler | 14:16 UK time, Thursday, 11 December 2008

I want to be at home in my mother's kitchen making bread.

I want some more Salsola seed, but I think I may be too late to get an order in.

I want to be more organised about ordering seed this year. I'd like my veg plan to be the size of my belly instead of my eyes.

I wish I could find the errant slug in the green house as it's making a mess of the purple pak choi.
I'd like to find a dress in the charity shop for tonight's office party.
I'd like to not smell of bonfire smoke for the occassion.
I'm a little worried my girlfirends are going to ditch me for boyfriends tonight (though I'd wholeheartedly approve).
I wish I'd got on top of the aphids in the greenhouse as now they are all over the chilis.
I want the meal worms to grow as they're tiny and only the smallest robin would be pleased by them.
I wish I could identify my birds better.
I'm glad I got Joe a guernsey jumper for his birthday as he is very pleased with it.
I must get into my own garden and plant the hard-necked garlic before it's too late.
I'm pleased with the arrangement of DIgitalis lutea, achillea and Verbascum 'Helen Johnson' in the cottage garden, I think it will work well.
I'm looking forward to planting a sweep of the Digitalis 'Pam's Choice' in the spring garden.
I'm hoping I'll get a quince tree for Christmas (OH that's a hint for you). . .
Oh and what I really, really want is a pair of 1994 Chanel wellington boots (they even had steel shanks).

Have fun at your Christmas party Alys.
I can't help with the Salsola seed or Chanel wellies, but here's a link to help with your bird identification...

    Happy, happy Christmas!

The bird identifier is great, I'm not sure why I never thought to look on the RSPB, so thanks for posting Londonstone. It's a synch. Joe H and I can finely tell a male and female sparrow apart! (I know it doesn't say much for our bird skills, but you have to start somewhere).
Hipsterrichieboy,(is your name supposed to be read as Hipster richie boy?) best crab apple is free crab apple. There a lovely wild tree on the far field that spread a pool of acid green apples around its feet that i often use. Golden Hornet is a good garden variety, very large yellow apples. A peelable size so good if you're not straining. There are plenty of very pretty cultivated varieties, we have two lovely deep, deep red crabapples called 'Pink Sensation', which made for lovely picking, but didn't translate to much.
Must go as I can smell the sourdough is ready to come out of the oven.

Oh and have a lovely new year too!

Glad you found the bird identifier useful. It's satisfying to know the names of the creatures we share our gardens with.

So did any of your Christmas wishes come true? Will we see you on G.W. soon sporting steel shanked Chanel wellies?

Santa bought me a copy of your excellent new book, the Thrifty Gardener. A great read. Picked up loads of new tips. You write really well.
