Congratulations Mr Obama

Alys Fowler | 12:06 UK time, Wednesday, 5 November 2008

I woke this morning with that childish excitement that the day has begun. I knew the minute the alarm went off that it was going to be alright. Still I wept over breakfast at the relief. I think that this is the first significant, positive historical change I've witnessed in my life time. I, like so many, feel on top of the world today. This is good, really good.

It's just as well because otherwise two hours of pulling the shredder apart might have floored me. Grass, however dry, and shredders just don't go together. I had to take a pair of tweezers and a stanley knife to the axle, five strands of grass later and the thing works. Beth's been pricking out all morning, we won't go hungry for salad this winter. I've been toying with taking the indoor toms down to make more space for the indoor lettuce. I sort of loath to do it as they're still flowering and setting, but for the amount of pale fruit we'll get, it's a lot of space, perhaps next week.
I've been moving various clumps from the long borders. I've been noticing an ever growing amount of bindweed around the yew hedge and into the hot end and decided that now was the time to tackle it; bindweed is a pain anywhere, but particularly when it's got into mature clumps. The best way is to dig up the clump and soak it a trug of water. Once you've got all the soil off you can usually tweeze the the roots out, it's a fiddly, time consuming job, but it does pay off. I still have a great deal of shredding to do. Prosaic stuff for such a monumentous day, but there you go 'happiness is', as Iris Murdoch wrote, ' a matter of one's most ordinary and everyday mode of consciousness being busy and lively and unconcerned with self'.

I didn't weep, but I did wake up with a smile. In fact I felt so positive about the future, I went out and bought a greenhouse. I trust you would approve.

Very much so reveast. Now all you need to do is dig a geo thermal heat sink so you can heat it for and the future's rosy.

Could you show us how to install a geo-thermal heat sink on Friday's show?

Would love to, but still trying to work out how to retrofit ours. I think it's infinitely easier if you dig the hole before you install the greenhouse. If you're interested I'll post the link to how to do it? Go one, it's a brave new world now!

    hello,

sorry didn't spell check the last one.

Here are some links I've been using. We've decided to go on pea shingle and heat bricks that we've collected from various locations. Our fan is off an old computer from work and we've yet to decide on solar panels.

this is a good thread from It's not easy being green lot

and here is a more indepth look at the whole project

    hope this inspires you!

    Many thanks!!

Now you mention it, I saw it on the It's not easy being green show a while ago - but I didn't have a greenhouse then, so it didn't sink in.

I picked up Obama's autobiography today - out of curiosity. Though I'm delighted he was elected, I still expected to find it a classic politician's self-serving piece of work, designed to promote his anticipated career and puff himself up. Instead I discovered a deeply thoughtful, perceptive and beautifully written work, first published 14 years ago.

A cartoon in an American newspaper last week showed a sign on the White House lawn, next to the lake. The sign read 'Please don't walk on the water'. I only hope he can handle the pressure.

    Morning Alys,
Just a note to say how much I enjoy the present format of GW, it reminds me of the Geoff Hamilton days of old fashioned but practical organic gardening. long may it continue.

    best wishes

    Hi Alys,
I am feeling a bit bereft this weekend with GW last weekly episode and autumn coming to a close. What do you and the rest of the GW team do over the winter months? Do you still go to Berryfields every day?

    Hello all

    Trillium,
I'm hoping, perhaps a litte naively, that we all band together. That it wont be the pressure of one man's success, but that collectively we'll pull our socks up and decide to make this world work. I think it's hard to do that when there is no-one in particular to encourage and focus the attention in the right direction. But as they are already putting a bill forward to stop drilling in Alaska perhaps it just about to all kick off. . .

that 's very special! I commend your vegetable punning. Hopefully he can get to the root of the problem and we can all dwell in his swede success. Oh god this is awful. No more!

I'm glad your happy, that's a rare thing and welcome read on this damp morning!

    Politegreenbean,

Joe H and I are here all winter. We go about things as usual but get on with bigger tasks such tree planting, a vast lawn maintenance programme to get them back into shape after the heavy camera, put the long borders to bed, prune apples, repair paths, etc.
I'll continue to blog with the whats and whereabout of life here.

the jokes are the best bit of gardening.

I remember we were sent out to an expensive hotel to tidy up the borders in the pleasure gardens. At one point a glamorous lady came out of the Hotel with a dog lead and began to call out 'Benji Benji'. Then she came up to us and asked in a pleading posh voice, ' I say, have you seen a German Shepherd come this way?'. A fellow gardener looked up and said 'I haven't seen any kind of shepherd madam'. ;)
