Food thoughts

Alys Fowler | 14:09 UK time, Friday, 18 July 2008

Early Sulphur is the most amazing gooseberry I've ever tasted. It was like gooseberry syrup and yet fresh like ice-cream. This gooseberry has changed my opinion on gooseberry. I want more.

If I gave an honest account of what I do all day it would go something like this:

6:30am wake up, read Japanese cookbook over breakfast of muesli and berries from the garden
8:30am get into work have second breakfast of tiffin and some nuts.
9:30am start snaking in the veg garden on Japanese cucumber, some mangetout, a little mizuna and some radish seed pods.
9:35am washed cucumber leaves with milk solution in an attempt to ward off the mildew.
10am thin some curly kale, weed an errant red onion out of carrot patch, pick more mangetout. Start thinking about what to cook for lunch. Check cupboard for udon noodles.
10:45am mean to go to compost, get distracted by the fruit cage, eat gooseberries.
10:48am decided time for a cup of tea and Ma Fowler lemon drizzle cake.
12:30 start cooking lunch: British Queen potatoes, oriental greens and goats cheese. Ate in pub garden, odd meal but satisfying.
1:30 cup of tea and back to sowing mustard greens, chard, bunching onions, lettuce, salsify and more coriander.
3:30 more tea and cake.
4:20 pick greens for weekend inlcuding more cucumbers to pickle.

Clearly I think about food too much. I also seem to spend a large amount of my day eating. I'm not the only one. The swallows have moved to the garage. I supposed that's what happens you have kids and need to move to a bigger pad. The kids are very cute, but oh so hungry.

Perhaps you need to spend more time in the long borders away from the fruit and veg.

Hey what are you saying about my borders!
I put a good four hours into the long borders on Thursday and another hour or so yesterday. And I'm only spending so much time in the veg garden because a) it's fun and b) Joy Larkcom is coming!

ok I'll stop making excuses now

I don't have any long borders so I too spend too much time in the fruit and veg plot. These days I never know who might turn up to inspect the plots!

    That's my excuse sorted.

    Hi Alys
Gardening is good for the appetite and your diet looks pretty healthy to me.

I don't have fruit, veg, or long borders. But some serious pruning led to tea, cake and fab ginger biscuits this pm.

I've been watching swallows flying constant food runs for 3 youngsters. It seems to be working. They're spilling out of the nest.
