Brief nature notes

Alys Fowler | 16:33 UK time, Tuesday, 15 July 2008

I was off last week, hence the absence of postings. There is much to say. In just one week the vegetable garden seems to be a new place. But for now, here are some nature notes and I promise a proper post later.

The swallows have flown. Well, fluttered and spluttered at first, airing their wings on the potting shed roof, throwing themselves between sweet pea tripods as they got the whole flying thing. There was drama, the sparrow hawk came and was beaten off by the parents. It was a heart-stopping aerial show. And then this afternoon as we culled the ever growing reedmace population, they chatted across the pond, "look at us, look at our new world". I wonder how long they'll stick around before their long journey to Africa? They are by far my favourite thing of this summer. So let it be said here and now Simon King, thank you for reminding me what tool sheds are really for.
Whilst paddling around the pond margins, taking note of what was establishing here and there, I noticed two young newts in the shallow end darting around. What a job, heh?
