The Mighty D

Alys Fowler | 13:32 UK time, Friday, 23 May 2008

Monty has gone. The swallows have moved into the tool shed.

The garden is coming into its own right now. It's mature enough to really hold forth. Plus, this benign May weather has meant that it probably looks better now than ever before. It's a touching tribute to the man who's sown, grown, turned and trod this garden. But this makes it sounds like he's gone forever. He is not. He's just gardening elsewhere making beautiful spaces in the West Country. Still he will be missed, very much so.

The new additions to Berryfields are swooping and pooping all over the tools. I blame this on Simon King. If the garden becomes a mess of weeds, it's because we're all too capitivated with our new guest. They've taken to hanging out on the sweet pea tripods. The male likes Percy's and the female is hooked on Alan. What fine, sleek birds they are. We have to whistle before we enter the shed or else they veer dangerously near.

I just realised I'll never wash Monty's spade again. This, strangely, makes me very sad. Though he can rest safe in the knowledge that we'll never use it behind his back again. Sorry Monty, but it was just too tempting. Oh Monty it;'s very, very sad you're gone.

I wish Monty and his family all the very best and I'm sure gardening will play a key role in his recovery.

The garden at Berryfields says much about his personality and priorities. It's a tribute to everyone who grafted to create such valuable material for us aspiring gardeners.

Monty's left Berryfields in very capable hands. I hope you have more time to share your enthusiasm, experience and knowledge in front of the camera.

On the subject of spades ... I still garden with the spade and fork my dad used. I can't speak for Monty, but I know my dad would be delighted they're being put to good use!

PS. As slugs are excellent grub for hedgehogs, I wonder if the gardener can also be a naturalist?

Monty has given my 3 boys a fantastic love of gardening. The youngest could say 'Monty Don' before he was 2.
Friday nights find the whole family around the telly, waiting for their hero to appear and they watched him enthralled at Gardeners World Live last year - 'so Monty Don IS a real person, Mummy'.
This morning will find us all down on the allotment, building a sand pit and a boys' den as well as planting out the beans and listening to the birds. We'll drink a mug of tea to your health Monty and wish you, your family and your garden all the best.

    Hi Alys

I share your sadness that Monty won't be with you at Berryfields. He came across on TV as a positive and gentle influence, and as a good person. His work has inspired me to spend more time in the garden and try new things.

Along with millions of others, our family wish Monty a full recovery and offer thanks that he is still alive.

Carol, Joe and yourself are all engaging presenters and top gardeners, so I sincerely hope that 'the management' will leave you three to run the show permanently as a continuation of the current regime at Berryfields.

Happy gardening and enjoy the goldfinches!

I am very sorry to hear that Monte will not be hosting the show any more. His passion for the garden and all plants shone through the TV screen. I am at the moment reading Monte's book 'My Roots', a wonderful book, I can't put it down!
Thank you Monte for all the years you have guided and advised us. Good luck for the future, I hope it holds all you want it to, especially good health and wonderful times with your precious family in your lovely garden.

Let's ease up on the grief about Monty!

I will be tuning in to gardener's world in September for the first time for a long time! I found Monty's manner off putting, and hated the way he was dismissive of other presenters. I am sorry he is ill, but glad to have a new presenter
