Tonight's programme

Post categories:

Production team | 15:13 UK time, Friday, 31 July 2009

On tonight's programme Toby will be visiting RHS Wisely to get some tips on planting exotic plants and some inspiration for Greenacre. He will also show the steps involved in planting water lilies. You can find out more about the care of water lilies in our gardening guides.

In Carol's gardening class she will be revisiting the root cuttings her class propagated several months ago. We'll see the next steps involved in helping the cuttings grow into healthy plants. Meanwhile, Joe will be giving us an update from his allotment and harvesting some of his crops. He will also be back in Birmingham with his design students, helping them make climber supports and providing tips on planting climbers. You can revisit all the stages of Joe's Design Made Easy tips featured in the show.

Lots of you have been asking about the progress of the growbag challenge tomatoes and tonight Toby and Alys will also be providing an update and comparing the progress of their plants.

It's the perfect time of year to be sowing your eastern edibles and on tonight's show Alys will be sowing pak choi, tatsoi and mizuna. When sowing oriental vegetables there aren't many pest and disease factors to worry about, but slugs and flee beetles can be an issue in the early stages of their growth. Alys suggests covering the sown seeds with netting to keep them protected.

That's all for now, enjoy your gardening weekend.

On tonight's show Toby presented a feature on planting a new pond. At no point was there any mention of the absolute importance of buying aquatic plants from a reputable source so as to avoid the introduction of invasive non-native species. As the BBC, and Gardener's World especially, are always trying to show their green credentials, I would have thought that this extremely important message would have been at the heart of the sequence. Freshwater habitats, and the plants they support, throughout Britain are under huge threat from a range of aggressive non-native species e.g. Crassula helmsii, parrot's feather, floating pennywort, Azolla which all originate from aquatic plants bought from garden centres and suppliers. Remarkeably, these plants are still readily available at many plant suppliers and more often than not are introduced as as stowaways from plants such as ornamental water lilies. At every opportunity the media should be highlighting this problem - how about a show on the issue - I'll present it if you like.

The BBC should be aware that our native Nymphaea and Nuphar are also under threat from hybridisation due to the (accidental? irresponsible?) introduction of ornamental varieties. (As an aside, the algal blooms rereferred to in the Wisley sequence are most likley a result of a poor water quality - is this simple obserbvation beyong the RHS??)

Come on GW, is it really beyond you to realise that there are a vast array of native species which can be planted in ponds and which will not result in the ecological disaster resulting from non-native introductions? It's not a difficult decision to act responsibly.

Loved Friday's show, especially Toby at Wisley. Thanks to Alys as well for info about Pak Choi as I have planted two lots this year and both had developed holes in the leaves! Sowed some more today and have now covered them as suggested.
