We'll Miss You

Rosemary Edwards | 10:49 AM, Friday, 23 May 2008

Monty took the very hard decision this week to stand down as the main presenter of Gardeners' World. He has been our gardening leader for the past five years and while his decision to stand down is completely the right one, there is not one member of our team who will not miss him dreadfully.

From day one Monty has always been the voice of the viewer, making no secret of the fact that his huge gardening knowledge is self-taught. And that has always made him a very special presenter because we all know he talks from the heart, having gardened for real for over 30 years. He has made Berryfields his own and throughout his time on Gardeners' World he has fired our enthusiasm and brought home to all who work with him the pure joy of gardening. It's hard to imagine anyone taking Monty's place and as we continue to make Gardeners' World each week we hope that, Monty, you'll watch and let us know if we're keeping Berryfields on the right track. For us - Monty is still with us at the top of every programme - washing spades and dividing geraniums in our new titles - and for us there can be no better start for the nation's favourite gardening programme.
Much love Monty. Keep in touch.

I am also a self taught gardener and always felt that Monty's approach was grounded in the same instinctive love for living/growing things. I will miss meeting up with him on Friday evenings and hope that he will keep in touch with Gardeners' World. XXX

I feel rather shocked by the news that Monty is leaving the programme because I've always enjoyed watching him on the show and listening to his advice (and being inspired by his wonderful books, too). I especially like his zeal for organic gardening. But I wish him well and hope the next stage of his gardening life will bring him everything that he wants, and all sorts of treasures that he hadn't expected.

Take care of yourself, Monty, and have fun!

We were really sad to hear the news last night during Chelsea, that Monty is leaving as lead presenter of GW due to ill health. He has been an excellent presenter, full of passion and enthusiasm for horticulture. We have particuarly appreciated his passion for growing vegetables. We wish Monty a very speedy and full recovery and hope that it won't be too long before we see you again on our televisions.
May I make a plea to the producers of Gardener's World that Monty's replacement share a similar understated passion. Our great presenter was Geoff Hamilton and we feel that Monty very much continued in his vein. Carol Klein and Pippa Greenwood are true horticulturalists who care passionately about their subject (as opposed to image). Perhaps the time is ripe for a female presenter?

Looking to the future: PLEASE can we have Chris Beardsure? (Thinking gardeners' crumpet!) He too, is so enthusiastic and make realy complex items comprehensible. We know the BBC thought him too inexperienced to take over when Allen left, but surly his track record of the last five years now disproves that reason?

Also, his contribution to the use of gardening and outdoor work as a means providing troubled young people with purpose in life through his recent TV series is worthy of note.

As a replacement I would recommend Carol Klein for her practical approach, or Dan Pearson for his environmentally aware gardening.

I'd love to tell him that we named the tortoise after him - happiest when in the garden in the summer, a keen devourer of weeds and not really a fan of the long, dark winter!

Having experience of a stroke all i can say is that while in many ways it is like the end of the world in others ways whole new chapters of life will open up.
God bless Monty, and thank you very much for being a TV friend sharing your knowledge and enthusiasm with us all.
Take care and persevere with your rehab, it works but will take time and grit and i know we will see you soon.

Every thing you have suggested works... my husband has his own ideas on planting, growing pruning etc. but if he disagrees with me I just show him the relevant chapter from The Complete Gardener (or whatever) and he helps me to do it your way.

I'm miserable that you won't be on Gardener's World, but hope Channel 4 or the BBC will be in touch when you're feeling strong again and you'll make another Fork to Fork or something even better ? I'd prefer it to be YOUR show with no distractions or some populist producers ideas, please.

Until then have a beautiful restorative summer ? we'll all be thinking of you and looking forward to having you grace our screens and bookshelves again.

Sorry to hear of your illness, Monty - as everyone is saying, you'll be sorely missed. Geoff Hamilton was my inspiration for taking gardening courses part-time, while I still did office work; nearly twenty years later, I've been enjoying working as an organic gardener for a long time. I remember feeling jubilant when I realised Gardeners' World had appointed you - someone who really believed in organic gardening - to lead the team. Yes! I've also enjoyed listening to you on the radio, talking about your work with disadvantaged communities, and the therapeutic benefits of gardening.

Thanks for all your hard work, enthusiasm, and gently inspirational spirit, and I hope you enjoy a well-earned, albeit enforced, rest, in a green space. all the best for a speedy recovery. xx

Too much chat and glitz, such as the commentary at Chelsea this week, are neither appreciated not helpful. Please keep to the basics. Gardening should not be a reality nor a celebrity show. Passionate gardeners want to learn something and feel connected with the Garden at Berryfields in a way that helps us improve - as Monty managed to do so well.

I had the hole patched and suffice to say it has taken me nearly 2 years to get back to full strength but I have definately changed as a person. This is terribly sad news, but we wish you well Monty.

For me Monty restored a sense of balance and honesty to the programme. A presenter genuinely interested in traditional gardening, rather than instant make-over. A gardener capable of striking the perfect balance between vegetable and flower gardens. Passion and flair with core values. He recaptured the heady days of Geoff Hamilton, the essential essence of the show but with his own unique style, that was absolutely right for the show and our times.

Please, please, BBC consider very carefully any decisions about a replacement lead presenter for Gardeners World, try to preserve the values that Monty restored to the programme. Please opt for an all-rounder - a gardener with an equal passion for fruit, vegetables and flowers.

And he can communicate these brilliantly and charismatically on the box. I hope he will continue to broadcast.
Meanwhile, having suffered the 'Allen Titchmarsh Gardening Show' for years, I am praying that the producers will select a main presenter in the Monty/Geoff vein. What I am dreading is 'Swifty down at the old Bull and Bush'! I think Alys has a great future [no nonsense, crisp and quirky!] while Chris Beardshaw is lighter than Monty but would probably grow in the role.
