Show of Hands - Haiti Benefit Gig

Mike Harding | 16:50 UK time, Monday, 18 January 2010

I don't need to tell you that Haiti at the moment is as close as any of us are going to get to looking at Hell on Earth.

I can¹t even begin to imagine what it is like trying to live in a country where everything has broken down: and like the rest of us I watch helplessly as the TV news shows me more images of dead and injured human beings, starving children and a population on the edge of anarchy.
Those of you who live in the Devon area may be able to do something to help though, because Show of Hands are staging a special benefit night at the Exeter Phoenix Theatre on Thursday 21st January to raise funds for the victims of the disaster.

On stage with Show of Hands, one of the world's top folk bands, will be the wonderful singer / fiddler Jackie Oates,  great traditional singer and squeezebox player Jim Causley, and local singer songwriter Jenna Witts.

It will be a wonderful night musically and all the money made that night will go to helping the people of that benighted country.

Fools and their money are soon parted I suppose! Now I haven't been to Devon for a while - would people of Haitian origin (I'm sure there are some knocking around the UK) be welcome to attend the gig or would they be made to feel very self-conscious?
