Shelagh taking the plunge

Shelagh Fogarty | 11:39 UK time, Wednesday, 17 March 2010

My big Sport Relief swim looms large: a mile in the Serpentine in Hyde Park. Two good cold swims last weekend boosted my confidence and I've even started saying "yes" to people asking if they can come down and cheer me on!

The Serpentine Swimming Club and the Tooting Bec Lido (SLSC) people have all been super helpful and encouraging. All year round swimmers at Tooting must have wondered why Jacqueline Cousteau had turned up at the weekend, so reliant am I on the wonders of neoprene - an insulating fabric to end all insulating fabrics...

Plan to do a long swim in the Lido where the temperature is around 3 degrees, then a good stretch of the Serpentine with Peter Thompson, my friend, coach, and now sole beneficiary of my will!!!! Did I mention I couldn't have done it without him?....He insists I take Thursday off from swimming, then we hit the waters with purpose on Friday morning, live on Breakfast, around 8 in the morning. Brrrr.

Shelagh succeeded in her challenge - have a look at how she got on in this little video we made.

Has the concert for Bangladesh finished yet? No, not the one everyone thought was about the cyclone, no the one about the ethnic cleansing of the same, though years afore the word cleansing meant anything more than washing someone’s feet.

Seems the BBC sponsored charity to extract monies goes on unabated, what is next, the CIN? Then it is the Blue Peter Xmas appeal. Are still collecting the milk bottle tops for Sudan?

And it must have been 5 years since Ethiopia has been mentioned!

Sorry, to me, all this has melded into on contrivance of extortion, not on the pockets of those in the UK, but the ilk of UNICEF and others that have not been supported in 60+ years of the UN. Now, is not every time my sky box is rebooted and I us the up key to 101, in 15 seconds there be a plug for this or that. Is the BBC a public broadcaster catering for all or some sponsored outfit. On the commercial stations there is a distinction between funded programmes, such as the Champions League and commercials is succinct. On the BBC, there is no such distinction, they appear as some news story, not an event.

No got it, cross media hype again. Global warming Monday Tuesday, today, travesty in Africa. And the yogurt knitting anti globalisationistas that eat their organic sweet corns from Kenya and plat a tree to save the planet. No thought for the plane that carried the foods here, but a £1 will atone the guilt of taking foods from the starving

In other times, would this not be a repeat post of a few weeks back.

Which cause is this current Geldofian plea for money benefitting? I agree with the post above.

Well done, Shelagh, your challenge would have scared the pants off me! I admire anyone who tries something new, something they would not normally do, in aid of charity.

It's a shame others have used this space to complain about too much fund raising on the BBC. If those who are tired of these events really object so much, they could always try watching another tv channel - especially those with sky tv - there are literally hundreds of other channels to watch. The fact that there are so many of these events surely shows just how much help is needed in the World - but no-one is forced to contribute - it is all voluntary.

I've enjoyed listening to Shelagh's exploits - the training and preparation as well as the actual challenge today - well done again. Some of us appreciate your efforts.

Congratulations, Shelagh. And as for the witless and inchoate contribution posted above by the '2nd Earl', assuming it's not a parody, how on earth do you manage to pack so much cliched cynicism into one comment?

I feel sorry for you. Well, I don't actually...
